7 Units Connecticut -15 -105
Duke rotated its quarterbacks in a 27-12 loss at Navy last Saturday but they combined for only 90 yards passing. Sophomore Mike Schneider was 8-of-13 for 59 yards while senior Chris Dapolito finished 5-of-7 for 51 yards. Cedric Dargan was the bright spot for the Blue Devils rushing for 114 yards on 20 carries, including 101 yards in the first half. Duke returns only five starters on offense and it doesn’t bode well for the offense to struggle against a Navy team not exactly known for its defense. Connecticut romped against Murray State 52-14 as quarterback Dan Orlovsky tied a career-high with 382 passing yards and five touchdowns. The Huskies have won six in a row going back to last season and have high hopes in their first season in the Big East as they return 16 starters. Running Back Terry Caulley who was the nation’s leader rusher until he was injured in the fifth game last year will sit out this season but sophomore Matt Lawrence fared well finishing with 76 yards on 18 carries. Defensively UConn returns virtually its entire linebacking corps and secondary. Connecticut has the big edge on both sides of the ball and should win this contest in a rout.
7 Units Washington State -3 -103
Note: This game is technically at a neutral site, being played in Seattle, but WSU has a large Alumni following.
Colorado dominated play in the first quarter, on a pair of one-yard touchdown runs by Bobby Purify and Joel Klatt gave the Buffaloes a 14-0 lead before they held on for a 27-24 win over instate rival Colorado State Saturday. Purify ran for 189 yards on 26 carries. In the fourth quarter, Brian Iwuh picked off a pass and returned it 37 yards for a score to extend Colorado's lead to 27-17. A fourth quarter blocked kick set the Wassu wheels in motion and led to a go ahead score as the Cougs defeated New Mexico 21-17. Replacing All Everything QB Joe Gesser, Josh Swogger passed for three touchdowns on 24-of-38 for 240 yards. Troy Bienemann had 56 yards receiving and hauled in the critical touchdown pass while Trandon Harvey caught six balls for 46 yards with a score. The WSU losses on defense have been mounting over the past couple of seasons and this year the team has nine new starters on that side of the ball. In fact, there is only one starter returning from the entire front seven, middle linebacker Will Derting. Fortunately for the Cougars, Derting is one of the top linebackers in the nation. The Cougars could be in trouble every time Purify breaks through the front line and challenges WSU defenders in the middle of the field. Washington State is certainly going to have a game on its hands. Last year Wassu won easily 47-28 but they did have Gesser throwing. Washington State is 15-2 SU, 9-6 ATS at home the last three years.
