school websites, and local newspapers are always helpful for some useful information you won't find everywhere

Ok, first of all lets start with the basic rule that kills people on this site: If you are going to tail a top capper do it right. Don't pick and choose...you play all the plays for all the right amounts and you will win/lose exactly to the dot what they win/lose. You can't just gather 4 cappers and pick and choose plays and hope to win.

Ok, now if YOU want to do the capping I would say that you can look at all the stats you want but the most useful tool when capping NCAAB is what you see and what you hear. Watch the games, the players, how they play, strengths, weaknesses, how they react to certain things, and just take it all in. The more teams you watch, the better. Then what you hear. It is probably a good thing to read around the local newspapers, forums, websites etc to get a feel for how the people who know them best view thier team. Also doesn't hurt to know people who attend some of the schools.

You use what you see to form an opinion on how the game plays out and what you hear to form an opinion on who will be playing extra hard and who may just go through the motions.

I really can't explain what I do because I don't have an exact layout. I just browse the net, watch the games, and read all types of things. Then use every bit of information to form an opinion.

One MAJOR factor in CBB is homecourt. Another big one is coaching.

I like this site, Basketball State, quite a bit.
http://www.bbstate.com/

breaks down points per possession and posts their own rankings slanted to defense, sched. strength and road wins. Best stats for mid/ lower majors also.

Look at the matchups. Two teams may look evenly matched based on record and rankings, but does one team have a 7 foot center and the other plays 3 guards with nobody over 6'7? For example last week Oklahoma played at Kansas St. Was essentially a pickem, because oklahoma was playing on the road in a tough place to play and had not been dominating opponents. But K State just had nobody that could matchup with Blake Griffin and he dominated the game.

Also there are so many games that the lines are not a sharp as pro sports, but if you try to cap every game you waste that advanatge. Try sticking to a few conferences you know well.

You've gotten lots of good advice so far. I'll throw my 2 cents worth in...

GD, HD, and SA's threads are must reads, IMHO...You won't necessairly agree with everything they have to say, but it'll give you something to think about.

Whew, where to start?

One thing that will assist you is keeping records. There are 344 Div.1 CBB teams. It's very difficult to try to remeber everything you need to know about all those teams, players, coaches, home/road stats, etc.

Of course, Excel is a good place to put down data, as you can sort it different ways for analysis.....but more importantly, simply compiling data is a way of reinforcing the stats that you will need to know later. Everyone has their own way of compiling data. I suggest you select items that you feel are necessary and simply begin. Undoubtedly, you'll need to revise your database many, many times, but each time you'll be further along in the process. Your notes may be about player strengths, weakness, team schedules, coaching decisions, home court tendencies....anything you deem important. Most of the things you jot down now will be useless later, but thats all part of the learning curve. It's important you identify those items.

I know this is not a precise quote, but it rings true...."....unless you have inside information or are able to process informaton that is wildly available in a superior manner, you're better off not gambling.

FWIW....good luck
