In Europe, you can see books sponsoring soccer teams on the front of their freaking jerseys. I don't know where the myth came from that legalizing betting in the US would suddenly lead to rampant game fixing. If anything, it's probably the other way around...as more eyes would be able to spot suspicious betting patterns.
I'm literally shocked (in a good way) Silver came out and said this. The NFL will be the last domino to fall...they like to pretend none of their viewers bet. I know some people who work for the league who have told me about the ridiculous seminars they have to attend every single year where management basically repeats "Don't go to Vegas!" over and over again.
