With the big Game 7 tonight in NY, my mind has been in a nolstalgic mode today. A lot of memories of good times I have had in my life regarding my Cardinals. Three memories come to mind:
First of course was in 1982. Parents had put me to bed, on the night of Game 6 in World Series. Cards were down 3-2 with John Stuper on the mound in must win situation. I remember having my radio on and staying up late into the night as game was delayed my rain for what seemed to be a long time. Cards won 13-1 and I remember waking everyone in the house up when they got the 27th out. Parents were not happy and even grounded me though the next morning let me off as they understood and were in better mood.
Second, was in 1985. They played a ton of day playoff baseball. I remember it was Game 5 in NLCS. Raced home from school to see if Cards could take lead on Dodgers in best of 7 after being down 2-0. I remember getting home in 9th inning. Cards hold Dodgers in tie game and in bottom of 9th, all time great Cardinal moment occurred. Jack Buck makes call...Long one into right.....Go Crazy Folks! Go Crazy! Cards win 3-2 on a home run by the Wizard! Sister and I went absolutely nuts.
Third was actually last year in Game 6. Went to Busch to watch my Cards lose series. I had played several games and watched several games in Busch. It was the last game at Busch. Larry Walker comes out into right field which is where I was sitting. Cards chant one more year. I got all choked up and actually started crying as it was the end of Busch Stadium. One of the saddest days as it was like a moment that signified the end of my childhood even though it had long passed.
I thought I would share some of my great moments with the significance of the night. Game 7's are wonderful and heartbreaking. Would love to hear others moments. My stomach has been in knots all day wondering what tonight brings. I am bracing myself all day for disappointment. I hope I am wrong. Cards are back on the cliff, will Mets push them off? We will find out soon. BOL and thanks for sharing your stories.
