Dick Ebersol's young 14 year old son Teddy Ebersol missing

Ebersol crash shakes TV sports world
By Rudy Martzke, USA TODAY

Television sports executives reacted with deep concern Sunday upon learning NBC Sports and Olympics chairman Dick Ebersol had been seriously injured in a plane crash in Colorado.
His son, Teddy, 14, was missing, the network told its Denver affiliate. Another son, Charlie, also was aboard but survived. Two other people on the plane were killed.
"We're overjoyed Dick survived this crash, but our hearts go out to Dick and Susan (St. James, his wife) on the news of his son, Teddy," Fox Sports chairman David Hill said. "This is a horrible, horrible tragedy."

TV consultant Neal Pilson, former president of CBS Sports, said, "Dick is an inspirational leader for our industry. We all pray for him and his sons."

"Dick's one of the giants of this industry," said Barry Frank of IMG, "and an injury to him or his family affects us all."

Ebersol, 57, was aboard the plane bound for South Bend, Ind., where Charlie Ebersol is a senior at Notre Dame. (Related item: Ebersol survives jet crash; two killed)

Dan Prinster, vice president of St. Mary's Hospital in Grand Junction, Colo., declined to confirm that Ebersol had been transferred there. "Family members have asked that we not release the names or conditions of the two patients related to the Montrose crash that were transferred here," he said.

Often named one of the most powerful people in sports by The Sporting News, Ebersol took over a struggling NBC Sports in 1989 and built one of the most effective network sports divisions, landing rights to the NBA, Major League Baseball and horse racing's Triple Crown.

However, he is best known for directing NBC's purchase of the U.S. TV rights to five Olympic Games in 1995. NBC has added two more Games, taking it through the 2012 event.

MSNBC Countdown host Keith Olbermann lauds Ebersol, the network manager.

"I don't know how many of us think of him more as a role model and mentor than we think of him as a boss," Olbermann said.

The plane crash occurred at a time when Ebersol was to lead NBC in expected negotiations with the NFL for packages for the broadcast network and cable's USA Network. That responsibility could fall to NBC Sports President Ken Schanzer.

Like other NBC Sports officials, Schanzer declined to comment Sunday.

I sincerely hope the young man is found alive. wil.

i hear ya on prop planes. the smallest i ever flew was a Continental Express one from Hartford to Newark - and this plane was a large one in that it had rows of 2-3 seats on each side of the aisle, flight attendants and restrooms - unlike most props that have 20-ish seats and are louder than a rock concert.

as for ebersol's youngest kid - i hate to say this - but it doesn't look good for him. knowing what the weather was like and the fact the kid probably wasn't bundled up in too much heavy clothing, the chances of finding him alive aren't very good. surviving that long in those temps is a longshot at best. the reality of it is ebersol's probably gonna be having an emotional funeral for his kid sometime soon.

i hope not but reality sucks - and this bit of reality is no different than most cases.

<TABLE cellSpacing=0 cellPadding=0 width=635 border=0><TBODY><TR><TD>NBC Sports Ebersol's Son Missing After Plane Crash (Update1) Nov. 29 (Bloomberg) -- NBC Sports Chairman Dick Ebersol's 14- year-old son is missing and probably died after a private plane carrying the executive and five other people crashed yesterday, a Montrose County official said.

The son, Teddy, ``probably perished in the crash,'' Montrose County Chief Deputy Coroner Matt Eilts said at a press conference. Ebersol, his 21-year-old son, Charles, and the co- pilot are hospitalized. The pilot and a flight attendant were killed, the Denver Post said.

The 18-seat jet crashed at Montrose Regional Airport in southwest Colorado, not far from the Telluride Ski Area where the Ebersol family has a home. It was flying to South Bend, Indiana, where Charles is a senior at Notre Dame. Charles pulled his father from the wreckage, according to the Denver Post.

Eilts said the search for Teddy has been suspended until officials from the National Transportation Safety Board arrive on the scene. Ebersol and Charles are being treated at St. Mary's Hospital in Grand Junction, Colorado, about 70 miles north of Montrose.

NBC Sports spokesman Mike McCarley declined to comment.

Ebersol, who joined NBC in 1974, was executive producer of ``Saturday Night Live'' in the early 1980s. He was named chairman of NBC Sports and Olympics in 1998 and signed a nine-year extension last year to continue running NBC Sports through the 2012 Summer Olympics.

Investigators searched for Teddy Ebersol yesterday when the crash occurred. His seat was ripped from the aircraft as the plane crashed while attempting to take off, said KUSA-TV, NBC's Denver affiliate.

The station said crews are searching by helicopter and on the ground, but the teenager hadn't been located by early Monday, the station said.

Ebersol's wife, actress Susan Saint James, wasn't on the plane, the station said. Saint James starred in ``Kate and Allie'' and ``McMillan and Wife.'' The family lives in Connecticut.

The plane, which was identified as a CL-602 Challenger, which can hold up to 19 passengers, is registered to Jet Alliance of Millville, New Jersey.

lol.....The aircraft that is in Question is not a prop plane.....

This is hitting close to home as I work for an airline who currently owns three prop planes....They are KING AIR 350's and are beautiful airplanes that seat 8, leather seats very nice plane....We also fly 4 PIPER NAVAJOS tht seat 6 and lick ass...We also own 2 citation 10's...These are jets and are unreal...I fly around 3 times a week aboard a combo of all 3 planes...I can honestly tell you that I feel just as safe on the KING AIR 350 (turbo prop) as I do on the Citation 10 (Jet).....Just as easy for things to go wrong on both...The PIPER NAVAJO is a bucket of bolts that if you are not comfortable flying to begin with this will surely not change your views....

Our geographical region is ocean surrounded by foggy mountains....Too make things worse we often fly to uncontrolled airports with no towers...

Moral of PETEY"S post: Flying on well kept aircraft with a quality crew is safer than driving any day of the week.......

I think American pilots are different than any other group piolts...

All pilots are arrogant but Americans are by far the worst...which is perhaps why they crash the most.???

Anyways it saddens me to see planes go down and wish the best for the EBERSOL family.....

Pete, good post...when we meet someday remind me to tell you about my two years on Mackinac Island in the Winter...the only way to get off the Island was a Piper Cub or snowmobile accross a semi-frozen lake. The fog was nuts.
