Ballplayer Charged With Battery in 'Sausage Attack'
MILWAUKEE — A member of the Pittsburgh Pirates (search) was booked for misdemeanor battery after hitting a woman with a baseball bat as she raced around the infield dressed as a sausage.
First baseman Randall Simon was released after the incident and later played in Wednesday's game against the Milwaukee Brewers (search). It is up to prosecutors to determine whether formal charges will be filed and a meeting between Simon and district attorney officials was set for Thursday.
In an event that's a fan favorite at Miller Park (search), four people in large sausage costumes race around the bases between the sixth and seventh innings at Brewers games.
Film of Wednesday night's race showed that when the group went past the Pirates' dugout, Simon made contact with the Italian sausage character -- portrayed by a 20-year-old Milwaukee woman -- hitting her from behind and causing her to tumble to the ground.
As she fell, a woman portraying a hot dog went down as well.
Deputy Inspector Sherry Warichak said both women were treated at the scene for scraped knees. Warichak said police interviewed the women but declined to release their names.
Simon drew boos from many of the fans when he was later used as a pinch-hitter in the seventh inning. He grounded out in a game Milwaukee won 2-1 in 12 innings.
Pirates outfielder Reggie Sanders said he thought the weight of the sausage costume contributed to the fall. "It maybe made it look worse than it was," Sanders said. "It was an unfortunate situation and, hopefully, it gets resolved."
Rick Schlessinger, the Brewers' executive vice president for business operations, said he felt Simon's "conduct is just unjustified."
