Journeyman, You may not be aware of this, but GM Branch Rickey made all of the Pittsburgh Pirates wear batting helmets at their field positions in 1953.

The Buccos finished 50-104 55 games back of the pennant winning Brooklyn Dodgers. They were not required to wear them the following year but if memory serves me correctly a few did.
