might look like a small consolation, but it's a very important result.

The Senate will enable Republicans to bring policy debates into the daylight, where they could use public opinion to help defeat bad legislation, or they could simply stop bad policy on their own.

For example, I believe the Employee Free Choice Act which enables Union intimidation and the Freedom of Choice Act which enables drive through abortions by anyone at any age for any reason at any term will be defeated in their present state.

I also think the "Fairness Doctrine", intended to regulate the only media the Liberals don't control, will never see the light of day.

If the Democrats had a filibuster proof majority, they could simply push through and agenda, often with little fanfare, debate or coverage. The Senate is probably going to save them from themselves.

I fully agree willi99. I was very pleased to see Miss and GA Senate seats stay red.

Quick question? I thought the democrates need 60 seats to be a filibuster.. RIght now I believe they have 56? How does it make it a filibuster?

They need 60 seats to be filibuster "proof", meaning they can stop or override any filibuster. Because the Republicans have 44 seats, they can use the filibuster tactic.

Thank God for Mississippi. Roger Wicker in the house.

A fillibuster in Lamens terms is the ability of the minority in the Senate to basically "Jam Up" a bill from getting through. In other words, a contested bill.

The Senate Majority needs a vote of 60 people to "override" a filibuster. With the dems not holding 60 seats, it basically makes it impossible.

A bill can still pass even after a filibuster, but it can sometimes extend it for many months, and even years. Thus, handcuffing the current majority body and USUALLY forcing them to make negotiations on the bill to get it passed.

Remember, the Senate does not meet all year round.

... the Freedom of Choice Act which enables ... abortions ... for any reason at any term

This is not correct. After viability - "that stage of pregnancy when, in the best medical judgment of the attending physician based on the particular medical facts of the case before the physician, there is a reasonable likelihood of the sustained survival of the fetus outside of the woman." - abortion is only allowed when necessary to protect the life or health of the woman.

It is true, as they eliminate State standards. The wording you cite is cheap hogwash, that "abortion is only allowed when necessary to protect the life or health of the woman" shit carries no weight, never has.

Abortionists always find some justified reason, why do you think so many partial birth abortions are performed today? Same bullshit, just trying to force it upon every State now too.

This is not a problem of the law itself. Investigate questional cases and prosecute where there's no true justified reason.
Just because self-defence is a justified reason for killing a person it does not mean that the law declaring murder a crime is useless, right?

Still too many "fence riding" Republican Senators that in this environment will easily go with the flow and vote with the majority. Even without the 60 Democratic votes it might still be fillibuster proof in my opinion. I usually like to see the glass half full, but I am a realist when it comes to the Senate.

Keep the drive-thru abortions...I'm getting tired of seeing all of these one-parent rug rats running around raising hell. They would do us more good being lab experiments for stem cell research.

It's going to be a long eight years if you choose to remain fixated on an Imaginary piece of legislation

The real FOCA - as currently pending in the US House - makes absolutely no mention of "age" and it specifically allows for states to make the abortion of viable third term fetuses a criminal act.

*PBA's - aka third trimester terminations - are incredibly rare if measured in relation to the total number of terminated pregnancies nationwide in the USA

*The FOCA of course does not "force a state" to do anything other than not enact legislation that would subject an American women to arrest, criminal prosecution and prison time in the event she elects to terminate an unwanted, unviable fetus.

Yep.

And for a significant percentage of potential abortion clients, such as teenagers from financially disadvantaged home scene, we need to expand currently legal "drive through" services to include state-funded ExpressLane service so she can get the scudder flushed out asap - preferably in the first four to six weeks when the embyro is smaller than the size of my hootie.

Okay....maybe not MY hootie (that would be more like the first THREE weeks)....but you get what I'm sayin'
