a big night in politics tonight (Thursday 7/21/16)

Since viewership for the Republican debates set new records because of Donald Trump, I think they'll be a lot of people watching his speech tonight. If he comes off as composed and responsible and non threatening and a man with ideas and articulate, if he comes off has presidential, he's going to surge in the polls to a significant lead he may never relinquish.

My theory is that people don't like the status quo (non debatable)
They know the economy sucks
They're concerned about national security
They're concerned about violence against police officers
They're concerned about the racial divide
They know Obamacare was a HUGE mistake
They hate DC insiders

None of that helps Clinton. Throw in the fact that they don't trust her and she has warts all over her body, and the fact that she's been a key player in bringing about the misery the country is experiencing, there will be significant movement to Trump if he looks presidential

All he needs to do is to mitigate the negatives the left wing press has been working night and day to pin on him

This is his moment, this is when people will pay attention without the liberal bias filter, this is the moment they observe for themselves.

Tomorrow, all they're going to hear is how bad he was, but many will be able to judge for themselves and the lies will mean less.

C'mon Donny, the nation needs you to stop the insanity.

the biggest problem with our economy is real wage growth, which has been non existent

higher income jobs have been lost, and replaced by (if replaced) lower income service jobs

and if our Labor Participation Rate were the same as when Obama took office, the unemployment rate would be horrific

The LPR is in and by itself an economic barometer, When the economy is good, more people are seeking employment. When it's bad, they drop out of the labor force



A simple example of how the LPR impacts the unemployment rate.

If 10 people want to work and 6 have jobs, the unemployment rate is 40%

If 2 people drop out of the workforce only 8 people are now looking to work and still only 6 have jobs, now the unemployment rate drops to 25%


Those are games played with the UE rate, and that's what's being sold today

The economy is in bad shape. The fed raised the prime rate once and it basically isn't holding. The government is printing money like it is free. The deficit is growing exponentially. Many, many people have given up looking for jobs. Look at the unemployment rate in the inner cities. Look at the record number of people on government assistance (food stamps).

here's why the unemployment numbers are going down, and the problem is compounded by the fact that real wages are decreasing as well (which encourages more people to stay home, it's a vicious circular cycle)

I think Rooftop is a business owner, I think he's a good man

although what you say is generally true, many people don't care about economic growth, simply doesn't mean anything to them

I think I know where Rooftop lives from previous conversations with him and that area is generally doing well. A lot of areas are doing well, even if overall the economy is stagnant. We have a big country. The Greater Boston area is doing very well thanks to VC and foreign investment and many industries thriving.

And then you have asset prices at all time highs, when people get their statements they aren't saying to themselves "Oh gee, this is because interest rates are at ZIRP levels and there isn't sufficient real growth" It is money in their pocket for now.

Can't wait to hear what he has to say tonight. I understand people's reservations about Trump....but I cannot understand how anyone with half a brain could openly say, "I'm voting for Hillary". For all the negatives someone my have in regards to Trump, Clinton's negatives are ten-fold.

As an active duty military member, I trust Trump will bring in the right people/leaders who will strengthen our military and make decisions based on national security matters rather than public opinion/social views. Additionally, I don't want Clinton deciding who our next 3 to 4 Supreme Court Justices will be.

the people who tend to have more of those assets tend to vote Republican

not by overwhelming margins, maybe 55/45, but they lean right

what the right needs is more of those people to go to the polls and maybe win that demographic by a little larger margin

Maybe he will just give Obama's speech from 2008

Certainly the Trump/Sanders axis suggests that people are angry, they want real change (with no sacrifices on their part obviously but that is another story) but I don't think Trump is being giftwrapped a terrible economy in the way that Obama was in late 2008.

We're in this space right now with all of the QE and gov't spending and there hasn't been any fallout yet, so a lot of people probably aren't feeling the anxieties or frustrations that they were circa late 2008 when their homes and portfolios were cut in half. And the people that asset prices and the economy has hurt (young people, people who didn't own the assets) are mostly voting democrat, is Trump appealing to them? is he going to get that vote? We'll see, but he probably needs to do a better job at expanding his base to win.

Either way, I don't think tonights speech matters too much. Dude has been on TV a ton over the last year and the election isn't for another 3 1/2 months. It is important but the pivotal parts of the race are yet to come.

I was hoping for a 10, like is children all delivered, but I don't think his delivery was as good as theirs' and I'm giving him a 7

The convention overall still scored very high for me, I'll give it a 9. I think they did a great job of defining Hillary and all the problems the democratic administration has delivered to this country, both here and abroad

As for the Donald's speech, I'll echo Chris Wallace (paraphrasing): "when reading the speech it looked like an incredible speech, but he seemed to be screaming too often"

I wanted more talk about mitigating racial tensions, I wanted him to focus more on the fact that he's not a threat to minorities, I think he could have delivered those positions better

but, he stayed with the style that got him to this point, can't argue with that

well stated, and I had said I wish he would address racial issues more, was a good opportunity to do so. I would grade him overall a tad bit higher than you last night, maybe 7.5 to 8
