9-year-old pitcher banned for throwing too fast, too hard

<!-- END YAHOO BUZZ --> Officials at the Youth Baseball League of New Haven want to bar 9-year-old pitcher Jericho Scott from playing because he throws too fast and too hard, the New Haven Register reports.
When Scott, whose pitches top out at 40 m.p.h, took the mound last week despite the league ruling, the opposing team forfeited the game and left, the Associated Press reports.
Now, officials for the three-year-old league, which has eight teams and about 100 players, plan to disband Jericho's team and redistribute the players among other squads, the AP reports.
Peter Noble, who represents the league, says parents and coaches, not players, expressed a fear of Jericho’s pitches. "Facing that kind of speed" is frightening for beginning players, he says.
"This is not a high-powered league," Noble says, according to the AP. "This is a developmental league whose main purpose is to promote the sport."
Nicole Scott, Jericho's mother, says she's dismayed. "I think it’s discouraging when you’re telling a 9-year-old you’re too good at something,” she says.
And Jericho? He says the whole flap bothers him and, besides, he misses pitching.
“I feel sad,” he says. “I feel like it’s all my fault nobody could play.”

Not to much harder than he should throwing maybe 5 mph above level. We have many 10 year olds throwing faster than that here. Only concern is him hurting his arm throwing that hard at a young age. Put the kids that are scared in ballet and play ball.

There are "competetive" leagues and "developmental" leagues.

At that age, I guess I could see the reasoning behind not wanting him or his team in the "developmental" league.

Blame the coach & the league. They should have ironed this out when the league started.

Give him a year with Railbird and he'll be pitching in the low 70's at age 10 ... (course his arm will be blown by 13 ..)

Here we pitch the 8/9year olds in machine pitch at 30-35mph that is a delvelopemental league. The machine dosen't hit the kids as much as a kid that throws 40 might. But yes if he is good and throws hard a select team would be the way to go. No league should discourage players from playing. Move him up to the 10's if anything.

Little League World Series done after 12 so Rail wouldn't need him at 13.

Give him a year with Rail and he'll be in court using a doll to show where he was touched.

40 mph for 9 year olds is normal. The top pitchers at that age pitch 40-42. Don't think there is that much difference between 35-37 and 40. Pretty weak to ban him, politically correct bs I guess.

My guess is the kid's wild as hell, and would plunk several batters a game. I'm an old fart that played kid pitch starting at age 6. One kid I remember in particular threw as hard as anyone I'd ever seen at that age (no idea how fast) - about 9 years old as I recall. His name was Steve, had really long hair, and was more likely to hit you than throw a strike. Faced him once, four pitch walk. Thanked God as I went to first.

They're concerned other kids will get hurt. Can't blame them, if it's a real risk. (I have no idea if it is)

As a couple of other posters mentioned, why not just move him up to the next level. If he can pitch like people say he can, the higher level would be better for him anyway because it would help him to play with kids more at his ability level.

Things like this are a perfect example of what's wrong with society today. People don't think anymore and they don't work together to solve problems. A short meeting with the kid, his parents, his coach and league officials could work things out. It's amazing what can happen if people think and work together.

They say he has great control, the other team just cant hit him so they go and cry.

It's not fair to make him play at a higher level, he's 9 years old he probably just wants to play with his friends.
