Report: Yanks close to agreeing to extension with Torre

March 4, 2004
NEW YORK (Ticker) - It appears Joe Torre wants to manage Alex Rodriguez for more than one season.

The New York Post is reporting that the New York Yankees are on the verge of signing Torre to a two-year contract extension worth up to $16 million.

Entering the final year of a three-year, $16 million deal, Torre had said he would probably wait until after the 2004 season to decide if he wanted to remain as Yankees manager.

But that stance apparently has changed. The 62-year-old Torre met with Yankees general partner Steve Swindal earlier in the week to begin negotiations on a contract extension.

"I am very encouraged that things are going well," said Swindall, the son-in-law of Yankees owner George Steinbrenner. "We have clearly made progress. He has made strong indications now he wants to manage the Yankees beyond this year and we want him back unequivocally."

The acquisition of Rodriguez, the reigning American League Most Valubable Player, from Texas last month may have helped to initiate a thaw in the icy relationship that existed between Torre and Steinbrenner.

Both battled last year over the handling of Cuban pitcher Jose Contreras, and Steinbrenner criticized Torre's coaching staff. Bench coach Don Zimmer quit last October because he said he was "mistreated" by Steinbrenner. Pitching coach Mel Stottlemyre admitted to feeling "personally abused" and pondered retirement before deciding to return.

Torre led New York to four World Series titles in his first five years at the helm from 1996-2000. Over the last three years, he has guided the Yanks to two more World Series appearances, but they lost to Arizona in 2001 and to Florida last season.

Torre has taken the Yankees to the playoffs in each of his eight seasons, compiling a record of 786-506 and 66-33 in the postseason.

Joe Torre is a fine manager but why on earth is he getting 8 million a year?

I would be willing to guess the Yankees could have gotten to the World Series with any manager most of the past 10 years...

And Torre

acting as if he wants to manage longer now because A-Rod has joined the Yanks lol? WHAT ELSE DOES THIS MAN HAVE TO DO? He has the DREAM JOB!?!

Give the guy a $150 million dollar payroll and he is a genius! But prior to coming to the Yankees he was considered an idiot. In fact I still recall the NY Paper headline when they signed him...."CLUELESS JOE"...NOBDOY in NY wanted him there!

$8 million is ABSURD but who else could run this team. This offseason has been strange even by Yankee standards. Steinbrenner is literally giving money away!!!! Torre would stay for much less!!!

You think with the money flowing as you say, maybe George had an awakening while he was hospitalized? Maybe he realizes he isn`t getting any younger and he can`t take his empire with him.....It seems (even for George) a bit unreasonable...8 MILLION for freakin manager?

I think George saw the end nearing and said " I need 5 more rings before I go " lol....

I do admire the Yankees, I hate them, but I do admire them! I really do wonder if I would enjoy them being my home team though, isn`t almost embarrasing the money and abundance of talent they can afford?

JMan-

It can be embarrassing being a Yankee fan who also loves sports and competition. With that said, they are my "home" team so I have to live with it.

The system is broken but as a business person I find it somewhat appalling that we have to share our revenue AND pay a luxury tax. I realize that other teams help the Yankees generate revenue (TO A VERY SMALL DEGREE) but that money flows basically one way..from George to the rest of the league. I could tolerate the current agreement more IF the other owners were FORCED to spend 100% of the additonal revenue they receive on their team. As it exists now they can pocket the cash.

George didn't have an awakening, he's just being George. The YES network brought in a ton of money for the Yanks last year so I bet he's feeling flush with cash.

BTW, bust the ****ING union!!!

I love the "who else could run this team" argument. The guy brought in Jeff Weaver when he had a rested mariano Rivera in his bullpen because, and this is what he said, "I wasn't sure how long the game was going to go"
