John Lannan and Tim Redding have been outstanding at spots this year but maybe nobody in baseball over the last few months has pitched as well with nothing to show for it as much as Jason Bergman has. Bergman is a hard throwing righty who is able to throw his fastball in any count and is deadly accurate with it on both sides of the plate. Bergman is a flyball pitcher, and usually I hate to back a flyball pitcher but he is one that doesn’t allow a lot of walks (only 22 in 93 innings) and this is a National team that is terrible defensively anyway, so it’s probably a good thing in this case. Also what plays here for the Nat’s is the Reds propensity to draw walks.

The Reds, like the Nats have not hit the ball well this year (both in the bottom 5) but the only reason the Reds have had more success is that they are much better at wearing pitchers out and rely getting on via the free pass, and Bergman will challenge these guys today, so walks should not be a factor for the Reds. The Nationals are not a great offense by any stretch, but with the addition by subtraction of releasing Do Luca and Lopez on Thursday, thus in turn the promotion of some young studs from AAA has given this team some new life. Also important here is the now healthy Elijah Dukes. In his first game off the DL last night, he was 2-4. He, and along with Kearns and Millidge form one of the better defensive outfields in the NL, so that is an added bonus for Bergman.

Josh Fogg is nothing special. He must rely on pin point control to be effective and its hard to back pitchers like that, especially ones who have below major league average stuff. Lannan has been the story for this team this season and for good reason, but Bergman is a guy who is much better then his W/L record would indicate 1-8. The Nats have lost 12 of Bergman’s last 13 starts even though in 70% of those starts he has given up 2 runs or less. I am looking for this trend to turn tonight as the Nats find a way to get this man a much deserved win at home.

Thanks fellas, sometimes its just better to be lucky then good. Not many times where a bullpen implosion actually helps you (or so it seems, but we'll take it). Looking now for something else to throw up.
