I'm not gonna tell you how you should feel but I think some of the angst people feel is because the media covers these shootings more intensely than ever before. The murder rate in the US is historically low in many major cities.

+1 Violent crime a well as gun crime are way down from where they were in the 1980's, not just down a little. We are not even close to being like Iraq.

There is no utopia but violent crime has consistently gone down since the 70s.

If people are on edge because there are a lot of crazies out there, I can see their point of view. Local news gets most of its ratings by reporting on homicides.

Well, the reporting on this kind of stuff has increased over the years because of a 24/7 news cycle and social media etc. We're more exposed to it in general.

But, to compare the U.S.A to any third world country is absurd. We are so lucky and most of us just don't see it.

That theater is exactly .7 miles from
my house.

Been there 100 times.

Im not home right now but it blows my mind how something like that can happen so close to my house.

That is one of the most safest places in America .

Smack dab in the middle of town.

Unreal

I don't think there is a single location in Louisiana that would be deemed "one of the most safest places in America".

Not really mind-blowing either...happens all the time in one form or another.

My thoughts as well. I've lived in Carencro and Lafayette and am shocked, saddened that this happened there. I remember it as a very peaceful and safe place, Carencro was "Country". I used to frequent The Keg and Shanahan's, prolly both long gone by now, likely near where this happened though...when they existed.

Talk to me after you spend 18 months in Afghanistan and fear for your life each day you wake up. Talk to me after you hear multiple car bombs shake your camp or you hear sniper fire from the distance. Talk to me after you see kids searching through the garbage for food. We aren't even close to that kind of place. Their houses get an hour of power per day. I'm more than comfortable on my laptop, in my recliner watching my flat screen.

Trust me, we live in the greatest country on earth and it's a dream come true compared to Iraq or Afghanistan.

Afghanistan is a war zone?......This is America.

In America these things should not happen....

September 11 2001, 19 militants associated with the Islamic extremist group al-Qaeda hijacked four airliners and carried out suicide attacks against U.S. targets. Two planes were flown into the towers of the World Trade Center, a third plane hit the Pentagon, and the fourth plane crashed in a field in Pennsylvania. The attacks resulted in extensive death and destruction, triggering major U.S. initiatives to combat terrorism and defining the presidency of George W. Bush.

In America these things should not happen....

Two explosions ripped through the finish line of the Boston Marathon on April 15, 2013. The euphoria of crossing the finish line turned into bloody chaos as two bombs blasted the end of the 26.2-mile trek. The blasts left more than 200 injured, three dead and a nation looking for answers.

In America these things should not happen....

Mohammad Youssef Abdulazeez opened fire at two military facilities in Chattanooga, Tenn., a rampage that left four Marines and one Navy petty officer dead.

In America these things should not happen....

A 20-year-old man wearing combat gear and armed with semiautomatic pistols and a semiautomatic rifle killed 26 people — 20 of them children — in an attack in an elementary school in central Connecticut.

In America these things should not happen....

James Holmes killed 12 people in a Colorado movie theater.

You're missing the point. The guy compared the U.S. to Iraq. In Iraq right now, there is no war other than ISIS raising hell. People are being murdered in the streets, people aren't eating, women are being raped out in the streets. There are no jobs.

You're most likely chilling in your house, drinking a beer, watching some TV. These people are in fear for their lives. It's not comparable.

Have you lived outside of the US? We live in a great place. We are spoiled rotten. There is no comparison.

America is just a section of Planet Earth though, physical universe, 3rd Dimension, where bad stuff goes down and always has. To expect to be somehow miraculously exempt from violence thats been happening since Cain killed Able, directly after God invented Rocks, is confusing to me.

What would make you think we're "Special"? Do those you share this Country with strike you as particularly "enlightened"? Those amongst us here from 3rd World countries and people born here drugged out on Prescription Meds...you feel safe amongst these savages and you feel like this place is somehow insulated from Madness?

Just cuz its "America"?

I don't feel like that at all. I feel more like its remarkable there aren't more incidents like this.

Its true. The most enlightening thing ever said to me in this regard was from an Arabic Man who told me: "You don't have to wake up each day worrying if your Government will have been toppled and the newly in power come and kill your family in front of your eyes as they force you to witness their slaughter so stop whining. You have no idea how good you have it, how fortunate you are. By comparison to many others in the World."

Tellin ya, odds are he was on some freaky meds. Its so commonly present in these scenarios we have to have this conversation at some point: "How Much devastation is worth Big Pharma making money?"

To me, before even this latest incident (if Meds prove to be a factor) we've already paid too much with the loss of Veronica Moser-Sullivan as a price so Big Pharma can make money and she was just one victim amongst many many many.

I'm not scared of Al-qaeda, I'm scared of Al-cracker

lol. I think some here might be more comfortable living in a socialist police state utopia, where no one has guns and everyone has to check in before they leave their home, and everyone is safe all the time.
