5 Dimes and my $923.00

Last night I called 5 Dimes up for an explanation on a proposition bet for the Hopkins/De La Hoya fight. The prop was regarding the number of times either fighter would be knocked down. I felt very confident that if anyone would be getting knocked down in the fight, that it would be Oscar De La Hoya. I wanted to make sure that I understood the proposition before wagering, so I decided to call 5 Dimes. I was transferred to wagering and I spoke with a rep, who himself asked for clarification on the proposition. He explained the prop to me as follows: If I took "Times Hopkins Knocked Down +1/2 @ -240" if Bernard Hopkins does not get knocked down, I would be a winner. The opposite bet was "Times De La Hoya Knocked Down -1/2 +210". My account was empty at the time, so I had to reload with Western Union.

I later placed a wager on the proposition over the internet. I felt all along that as long as Hopkins did not get knocked down or at least stayed ahead of DLH in terms of knock downs, that I would be a winner. Oscar is knocked out in the fight and suffers the only knock down of the fight. I felt that I was a winner. I see later that my wager was graded a loss. I called the book and spoke with a manager named Jim who tells me that my wager should have been graded a winner and that I should wait 10 minutes or so for it to be corrected. It was never corrected. I called back and was told to call in the morning to speak with another manager.

I call back this morning and I spoke with Walter on this matter and he told me that he would perform a search for the phone recording of the explanation of the wager to me. He told me to call back later after the 1:00pm football games and that he would inform everyone in the office of my complaint. He told me that by 1:30 or 2:00pm, the search should be completed and that I would be able to listen to the recording together.

So I wait and call back around 2:20pm and I am now speaking with Victor because Walter is no longer in the office. It seems as if Victor has not been briefed on what took place and he flat out tells me that the wager is final and that there is nothing that can be done.

It turns out that I risked $923 to win $384.58 on a proposition which really meant that Oscar had to create the most knockdowns @ -240. I have bet on many boxing matches and I never would have bet on such a proposition @ -240 if it were properly explained to me because the chances of Oscar knocking Hopkins down at all were slim going into the fight.

Victor at 5 Dimes has told me that, no matter what information was given to me over the phone by the clerk, my bet is final. Now that I look back at this, I really think that this was a bad line because if I was betting on Oscar to knock Bernard down more times, I should not have had to lay odds, especially @ -240.

I have never complained about a loss and really thought that I had a legitimate case. But according to Victor, the bet is final. I still feel that I have been robbed.

they should at least refund the wager, if not also with the winnings. you call and have it explained to you, you say ok and go through the trouble of sending a western union.

then on top of this, they say it will be graded a winner and the let all that time go by before saying "we changed our minds were keeping your money" what a bunch of crap

I usually side with the books, but if this went down as you say ... then you've been screwed.

Hopefully, the right thing will get done here.

Post in the Other Sports forum as well and ask if Joey/Odessa can help you get it straightened out.

If not that get hold of Mad Jack as they advertise with them.

they are correct in terms of what you bet lost. If was explained for you incorrectly, then they should refund it at a minimum (actually they should probably pay you as a winner).

You should be able to listen to the tape that you made your wager on.

If they explained it correctly to you in the first place, you would have bet the other play at +210, so you would have bet $923 for $1900 or something like that. Therefore, I think its a good compromise to just take the $385 winnings and call it square. That way they are still saving over $1500 in winnings they should have to pay you.

Cases like this are the reason I always use email for clarification on such matters.

It seems like 80% of the offshore clerks I've talked to are utterly incompetant.

Freak,

I was thinking along the same line as you about the knockdowns. I checked those props at 5 Dimes as well. It was confusing as $%^@! They had like 4 lines right together on the menu. I even put in a bet for each prop (didn't confirm)to try to figure them out. Still didn't get it.

Good luck getting this ironed out, I know what exactly what you wanted to bet. No good boxing analyst would have bet Oscar to win the knockdowns vs Hopkins

The fact that you liked Hopkins was clearly documented here on this site....

use that in your argument...

+ you called to verify the 'meaning' of the prop....

I hope this works out for you......

We are all rooting for you 'boxing freak'

They should let you listen to the tape...if they claim some bs about not hearing the call, it should be a winner automatically. Good Luck.

If the book gives you an OFFICIAL explanation of a bet, then they should honor it.

How are books supposed to add new props and wagering types if players are given wrong explanations when they try them.

Books should either abandon props or stand by any explanations they give.

The problem I see here is that you made the bet over the internet. Whenever there's a claim the way books look for the call is by the confirmation or ticket number of the bet that was placed into the software. If you didn't place a bet it would be almost imposible for them to find the call since they don not have any reference when it took place (at least on my experience). It is really a tough decision here.... Good luck to you.

I appreciate everyone's input. I want everyone to know that I am not a sore loser. If I lose fair and square, I eat my losses and move on. But in this case, I just feel as if I was misinstructed as to how this particular prop worked. Up until the time that I spoke with Victor, I had been given the runaround by everyone else as they were hoping that I would just stop calling. When I finally reached Victor, he was totally uncooperative. According to Victor, the clerk's explanation of the wager does not matter. Victor also repeated numerous times to me that this proposition was crystal clear and that there should not be any confusion as to how it works. If that was the case, I would not have called in the first place to get an explanation. It was obviously unclear to the clerk who had to put me on hold first and to Jim, who told me that it should have been graded otherwise.

I just find it difficult to swallow this type of loss. I was expecting to see the fight end without Bernard Hopkins getting knocked down by Oscar. According to the clerk's explanation, I went with that side od the prop. And at -240, it seemed logical that this side of the prop was for anyone thinking along those lines.

At this stage, all I would like is to have my wager amount refunded.

I will not be able to post further until after 7pm est on Monday because I am off to bed.

Thanks again for the feedback.

Walter said that all calls are recorded that come into wagering. He was well aware that I made the bet over the internet because I explained that to him. He told me that it was just necessary to find the conversation with the clerk. The call should be identified because I was asked my account number and password. He also mentioned that the conversation would have been transferred over to their computers from the tape.

m est. I called the customer service line at 1-800-305-3517 and requested to speak with the wagering department. The clerk that answered the (phone) asked me for my account number and password and we proceeded with the conversation. Afterwards, I told him to transfer me back to customer service for (person to person transfer) instructions."

If the above statement by the customer was true, any statement by any member of the 5Dimes staff would be binding. However, on the taped recording of the phone call in question, the customer only requested (person to person) informaion. There were no transfers on the call from the customer service department to the wagering department. There were no calls direct to wagering or transfers to wagering from this customer discussing this prop. The prop wager was placed on the Internet. Only after the prop was graded did the customer call to speak with the wagering department. At that time ONLY, did the customer ask to have the prop explained.

The prop read as follows:

Official knockdowns only. Team totals are invididual times knocked down.
TIMES HOPKINS KNOCKED DOWN +½ -273 o½ +120 +325 o½ +475 u½ -650
TIMES OSCAR KNOCKED DOWN -½ +233 u½ -140 -400 o½ +180 u½ -220

For those who are not familiar with how the 5Dimes website is laid out,
The first column is for sides/handicaps.
The second column is for totals.
The third column is for moneylines.
The last two columns are for team totals. As stated for clarification purposed above the prop, it states "Team totals are invididual times knocked down."

TIMES HOPKINS KNOCKED DOWN ZERO
TIMES OSCAR KNOCKED DOWN ONE

Above is how the prop was graded. The "TIMES HOPKINS KNOCKED DOWN" was zero. The "TIMES OSCAR KNOCKED DOWN" was one.

Winning wagers included:
TIMES OSCAR KNOCKED DOWN "-1/2"
TIMES HOPKINS KNOCKED DOWN/TIMES OSCAR KNOCKED DOWN "total over 1/2"
TIMES OSCAR KNOCKED DOWN "-400"
INDIVIDUAL TIMES HOPKINS KNOCKED DOWN "total under 1/2"
INDIVIDUAL TIMES OSCAR KNOCKED DOWN "total over 1/2"

Losing wagering included:
TIMES HOPKINS KNOCKED DOWN "+1/2"
TIMES HOPKINS KNOCKED DOWN/TIMES OSCAR KNOCKED DOWN "total under 1/2"
TIMES HOPKINS KNOCKED DOWN "+325"
INDIVIDUAL TIMES HOPKINS KNOCKED DOWN "total over 1/2"
INDIVIDUAL TIMES OSCAR KNOCKED DOWN "total under 1/2"

Selection: Line: Opponent:
TIMES HOPKINS KNOCKED DOWN +½ -240 TIMES OSCAR KNOCKED DOWN

Above is how the prop appears when looking at the Review Bets over the internet.

This prop, along with the other "extra" props, which 5Dimes does not normally offer for boxing matches, were all posted because of customer requests for them. Numerous wagers were placed on both sides of every wagering option available. The customer in question is the only one who had any type of a complaint. If any type of inquiry had been made regarding how the prop would be graded BEFORE the fight had started, then this problem would not be an issue. If the customer had actually called in BEFORE the fight and been told that the prop would be graded differently than what is explained above then 5Dimes would be at fault. In this case, 5Dimes will not tolerate being thrown into the forums on a lie. If any further clarification is needed, 5Dimes will be glad to provide any info needed.
