Last night I called 5 Dimes up for an explanation on a proposition bet for the Hopkins/De La Hoya fight. The prop was regarding the number of times either fighter would be knocked down. I felt very confident that if anyone would be getting knocked down in the fight, that it would be Oscar De La Hoya. I wanted to make sure that I understood the proposition before wagering, so I decided to call 5 Dimes. I was transferred to wagering and I spoke with a rep, who himself asked for clarification on the proposition. He explained the prop to me as follows: If I took "Times Hopkins Knocked Down +1/2 @ -240" if Bernard Hopkins does not get knocked down, I would be a winner. The opposite bet was "Times De La Hoya Knocked Down -1/2 +210". My account was empty at the time, so I had to reload with Western Union.
I later placed a wager on the proposition over the internet. I felt all along that as long as Hopkins did not get knocked down or at least stayed ahead of DLH in terms of knock downs, that I would be a winner. Oscar is knocked out in the fight and suffers the only knock down of the fight. I felt that I was a winner. I see later that my wager was graded a loss. I called the book and spoke with a manager named Jim who tells me that my wager should have been graded a winner and that I should wait 10 minutes or so for it to be corrected. It was never corrected. I called back and was told to call in the morning to speak with another manager.
I call back this morning and I spoke with Walter on this matter and he told me that he would perform a search for the phone recording of the explanation of the wager to me. He told me to call back later after the 1:00pm football games and that he would inform everyone in the office of my complaint. He told me that by 1:30 or 2:00pm, the search should be completed and that I would be able to listen to the recording together.
So I wait and call back around 2:20pm and I am now speaking with Victor because Walter is no longer in the office. It seems as if Victor has not been briefed on what took place and he flat out tells me that the wager is final and that there is nothing that can be done.
It turns out that I risked $923 to win $384.58 on a proposition which really meant that Oscar had to create the most knockdowns @ -240. I have bet on many boxing matches and I never would have bet on such a proposition @ -240 if it were properly explained to me because the chances of Oscar knocking Hopkins down at all were slim going into the fight.
Victor at 5 Dimes has told me that, no matter what information was given to me over the phone by the clerk, my bet is final. Now that I look back at this, I really think that this was a bad line because if I was betting on Oscar to knock Bernard down more times, I should not have had to lay odds, especially @ -240.
I have never complained about a loss and really thought that I had a legitimate case. But according to Victor, the bet is final. I still feel that I have been robbed.
