It would take a HUGE effort to shut it all down or get it to some small minimal. Even then, theres all those escort services.

the gist of the article...

So, why has this area become so popular for prostitution?

In March, a key law was ruled unconstitutional and police couldn't arrest suspected prostitutes. Word spread fast. Big time pimps kicked out the local ones and prostitutes are pouring, in even on buses. Rene's seen it.

Rene said, "There was literally 50 hookers on just this block. Fifty of them from California. They drop them off in the parking lot. They are staying at the weekly here."

The county has responded by ammending the law this month. It just takes a while for word to spread that police can arrest prostitutes again.

Every year since 2003 the number of arrests for prostitution in that area has topped 4,000. This year Metro says it expects to make 5,000 arrests for prostitution.

They are pretty scarce. I think a lot of them spend most of their time just handling routine traffic accidents. It's hard to keep up with the growth, so I'd bet LV has a very low number of cops per capita.

What a foolish statement...from the Metro website...

"Currently, Metro has over 5,000 members. Of which 2,400 are police officers and 600 are corrections officers."

and TTinCo, I assume you were in casinos most of the time. Of course you realize that all casinos have their own security staff. Be careful what you ask for...I see Metro cops everyday, I just don't want to see them too upclose and personal!

I don't read the local paper or watch local news because I don't care what happens in this shithole city so I wasn't aware of the excessive amount of streetwalkers in the mentioned area. It won't last long. That will be quickly resolved. For a big city, there are actually very few street hookers here. Sure, there will always be streetwalkers out there but you won't see too many. Hookers can work in the hotels, work for an escort servicece, advertise in alternative newspapers and place ads on the internet but as soon as they touch a sidewalk, Metro is usually right on them.

Prositution is illegal in Clark County, where Las Vegas is located. The casinos and the convention and visitor's authority don't encourage it but they don't discourage it either. All you have to do is see the convention and visitor authority's idiotic ad campaigns to see that. Local officials just don't want the tourists to see the hookers on the street. That doesn't fit Las Vegas's corporate image.

Hookers can ply their trade in the hotels as long as they are reasonably well dressed and grease the bartenders and security. They have no worries from the Metro because local law enforcement doesn't come into the casinos unless they are called by hotel security. Metro has pretty much given up trying to bust escort services because they claim their ladies are actually dancers and of course we all know dancing is perfectly legal. The escort services also have very good lawyers, By the way, stay clear of escort services that you see in the yellow pages and in brochures or on those glossy business cards. The fees they quote are for "dancing". If you want anything else, their prices are exhorbitant. The hookers that advertise in alternative newspapers and on the internet are practically impossibe to stop and Metro doesn't much care because they aren't visible to the tourists.

So as you can see, prostitution is doing just fine here. As long as they stay off the sidewalks.

I know what you mean Doug. My point was that I would expect a bigger police presence in areas that are full of tourists-and tourists carrying a LOT of cash. People getting robbed on the strip could be disasterous for PR.

Come to Vegas on New Years Eve if you want to see a bigger police presence. I live here but we got a room on the strip last year to see the fireworks upclose and personal. I don't really go to the strip all that much during the year, but I have parked in that lot next to the Stardust sportsbook and walked across the street to the Riviera, passing the exact spot where Alan Boston got clubbed/mugged. I always felt safe there until that happened.

That's a good example. With all the broke gamblers in & around Vegas, it's surprising that incidents like that don't happen weekly if not daily. If it was even close to being an issue, I suppose that the cops would step up their presence.
