BAGHDAD, Iraq (CNN) -- Suspected insurgents killed four American civilian contractors in a grenade attack Wednesday in central Iraq, U.S. officials said.

Flames engulf one of the two civilian vehicles that gunmen attacked in Fallujah
, Iraq.

Cheering residents in Fallujah pulled charred bodies from burning vehicles and hung them from a Euphrates River bridge.

Crowds gathered around the vehicles and dragged at least one of the bodies through the streets, witnesses said.

Residents pulled another body from one of the cars and beat it with sticks.

Also in the Fallujah region, five American soldiers died in a roadside bombing near Habbaniya, the U.S. military said.

The fatalities bring the U.S. military death toll in Iraq to 600, 408 of them in hostile action.

In the attack on the civilians, witnesses said two Mitsubishi vehicles left a military base east of Fallujah to make their way into the city, about 30 miles (48 kilometers) west of Baghdad.

The vehicles turned onto a Fallujah street as men -- whose faces were covered by headscarves -- split into two groups and threw hand grenades at the cars, witnesses said.

The assailants then sprayed the burning cars with small-arms fire.

Video showed crowds chanting and cheering at the scene, with charred corpses hanging from the bridge over the Euphrates.

The U.S. State Department said the U.S. citizens worked for a company contracted by the coalition to work in Iraq.

Fallujah is part of al Anbar province in the "Sunni Triangle," a region north and west of the capital that has been a hotbed of opposition to the U.S. presence.

The White House condemned the "horriffic attacks" by people "trying to prevent democracy from moving forward," spokesman Scott McClellan said.

A changeover of power from the 82nd Airborne Division to the Marines is under way in al Anbar.

"There's a small core element [in Fallujah] that doesn't seem to get it," said Brig. Gen. Mark Kimmitt, an Army spokesman who confirmed the four killed in the two-vehicle convoy were not military personnel.

Coalition Provisional Authority spokesman Dan Senor said those who exulted over the attack "are not people we are here to help. They are people who have a much different vision for the future of Iraq and the overwhelming majority of Iraqis."

Also Wednesday, two bodyguards for the governor of Diala province and three civilians were wounded in Baqubah, north of Baghdad, when an attacker pulled a car up beside the governor's car and detonated a bomb, Kimmitt said.

The bomb damaged vehicles and a building, but the governor was unharmed, he said.

In other violence Wednesday, three British troops were wounded when an improvised explosive device detonated near the southern Iraqi city of Basra, a British Defense Ministry spokesman said.

Spokesman Paul Sykes said the troops are receiving medical treatment. One of them was seriously injured, Sykes said, but he didn't know the exact nature of the wounds.

And once our guys leave, they'll probaly move onto killing each other until another strongman like Saddam emerges as top dog.

The Coalition has destroyed the infrastructure of the Baath party, so there's a void for a new system to emerge.

The US was the same when the Brits left, a brutal civil war decided who was the undisputed new boss.

(And Iraq floats on oil, so theres plenty worth fighting for.)

Hopefully, the US coalition will go into the city and wipeout the people responsible for this.

Way to much time on hand for the towel heads. They do nothing with themselves day in and nite out. When will the US and world get a clue that the Arab people and Muslim people are USELESS and EVIL people that need to be slaughtered and delivered to Osoma the RAGHEAD on a Arab platter.

Can the real smart people--the Palestinians have anything to do with this.

To help support OUR American troops, start ignoring ALL muslims and Arabs here in the states.Boycott them as people and humanbeings.

Does anybody really think these dirty low life ARABS would really be happy if they got their way.But I still don't get the drift what they are trying to accomplish.

Go see Alah the head rag head in hell?

Does anybody out here really feel for these saps of no-good ARABS?

My boss said if we can kill 1 arab a day, then we are really killing 2 arabs. The arab can't make a baby terriost if he is dead.
The Army needs to start torturing these Iraqies and their cousins the Muslims.Start cutting their hands off so they can't use tape on the bomb that they are putting on their belly.

Use the sand for something.Bury the Arabs under the sand and close the borders here in the United States so these holloween party goers can stay in their urine country!

There are no-good ARABS in this world period.Oh yes there are!Dead ones!

Terrible tragedy. Why dont we send a strong message that this BS will not be tolerated over there. Like some massive bombs in Fallujah.

Not that I disagree that this is massive BS, but how exactly do you intend to send the message that this 'will not be tolerated' when most Iraqis are up in arms over the US occupations that has killed so many of their civilians?

Again, not trying to justify it, but I wonder sometimes how I would react if my country were under direct attack for over a year. I think I can safely say I wouldn't be sitting in front of my computer bitching about how bad war is. I'd probably be firing my first gun.

One of my best friend's son was one of the 5 soldiers killed yesterday...Chaplan and Officer showed up at work just about noon to give him the news...21 years old...Was just sent over a few months ago and had only been enlisted about a year...He says the Military is being very helpful and very responsive so far---but they should be very helpful....It's the first casualty of the war that I have known personally and it just brings it much closer to home now...

I would be all for some serious retaliation or even some annihilation soon. A very large bomb might be a good answer and save a lot of American lives in the long run....Just think about the INC getting 350,000 a month for information that we could get ourselves, and we would no it to be legit, and I'm sure much cheaper....I don't know about any of you reading this, but 350 grand a month could be spent a little more wisely in the US....Maybe protection for us from future attacks?? Or maybe to the families that have lost love ones over there??

Just needed to get it off my chest....

Not that I condone what happened, because I truly believe it was a horrific site, but truly, why is it that people believe it is completely justified to have our army in a sovereign nation, occupying them? Iraq used to be, before economic sanctions, the hub of arabic education. After Gulf War I many iraqis could no longer be atomic physists nor nuclear engineers nor chemical engineers... so many of those became mechanical, electrical, architectural, and structural engineers. Now we have 1000's of contractors getting paid well to repair a country, whose citizens are hungrier, poorer, and more crime ridden and are more than capable of rebuilding their own infrastructure, yet are not being allowed to. I don't know desperation that would make me do something like what happened there, and neither does any one else on this forum.

Your friend's son would still be with us had Bush not ordered a pre-emptive occupation based on fabricated information.

I have a few Iraqi friends here locally who have also lost family members since the U.S. invasion last year.

Needless death is nearly always tragic.

As for:

MRNJSPORTS said: Why dont we send a strong message that this BS will not be tolerated over there. Like some massive bombs in Fallujah.

My Reply: Yeah. Shock and Awe!

Just go in and wage death throughout Fallujah! You may not get all the bad guys, but you'll get some of them for sure.

Then after the next guerilla attack on our forces which causes more needless American deaths, do it to ANOTHER city!

And then ANOTHER!

Just keep going til they figure it out.

Oh, and all you people whining about your friend's families who have lost soldiers in this invasion...for christsake, man up! This is WAR! It's all about making America more secure.

Right?

Ahem.

On a more serious note, I'd add that since the Resistance is just 'a small minority of Iraqis, maybe 10%', the 90% who love the U.S. forces will quickly work to turn in the bad guys, so no more bombs will be neccesary.

And you all do realize that the 'contractors' were not just random business operators. They were in fact paid mercenaries for Blackhawk, a private military firm that is one of many such companies that the U.S. military subcontracts the real dirty work to.

These mercenaries can serve dual roles. They can work side by side with U.S. forces when needed, but when jobs which would violate accepted rules of warfare are called for, these guys get the call.

Or to be more blunt, the Topic headline here would be more accurate if it read: 9 Soldiers Killed In Iraq. Needless American Deaths Continue To Mount.

I'm shocked that you would even joke about something like this, xpanda. You seem like the type to hyper-ventilate at the very mention of firearms. There's hope for you yet.

As long as we sit and not really take action against these Arabs, we will see and hear the same story everyday.US soliers killed etc. blah, blah. It does get old and sad everyday a young soldier is cut off for the rest of his/her life.

What are we waiting for?

Is Israel gonna supply the US with the right people that were responsible for this?

Why do we sit back take this crap from a bunch of "0's"?

You know if anyone of us's great grandfathers woke up from the grave and saw what these (muslim-arab (great people huh?)) doing by blowing themselves up day after day year after year, they would say put me back to sleep because they would be shocked to what is going today compared back to when they were alive.

MASS DESTRUCTION=MUSLIMS,ARABS,@ the smart ones that nobody wants---the black@white costumes-PALESTINIANS!

Joke? It wasn't meant to be a joke. I'm dead serious. If Canada were invaded, I would enlist. That doesn't even remotely change my anti-war stance, however ... what the US is doing in Iraq (and others) is pure aggression -- what the Iraqis are doing is pure self-defence.

Barman: CNN reported last night that the names of these 'civilians' were being kept private out of concern and respect for the families. On its face, of course that's honourable, but with your information, I can't help but wonder if it has to do with keeping sympathies at their highest back home? Is it completely normal and commonplace to withhold these names?
