was at my local casino t'nite for a n/l tourney and spent some downtime watchin this game ..........dont play any table games anymore, but can see this game has a huge house edge if you play all three spots........my question is for anyone familiar w/ this game and i'd like to know how to figure the odds that you will be dealt a pair getting three cards from a 52 card deck ..........this bet pays even money, so i can see that you are taking the worst of it, but just how bad i'm not sure.........shlda paid more attn. in statistics class i guess ....anyway, if someone could tell me the odds of this happening or let me know the formula to determine this i would be most grateful ..........tx

not 100% sure but heres my guess.

first card could be any card in the deck. 52/52 100% chance

second card could be any other card. 51/51 100% chance (you could also pull a pair 3/51 5%)

third card, you have 6 chance to pair. 3 for each of the other two unless you already paired in that case you win.

6/50 = 12% chance + 5% chance

My thinking is that you have about a 15-20% chance to pair. Huge house odds. I would stay away from it like the plague.

tx top, was thinking along the same lines.......just was wondering if you do play , whether it makes sense to just play the pairs plus bet and not all three spots (ante, play) against the dealer

I found a website some time ago that gave the exact odds on this game. Do a search for "three card poker" and find the site linked to "The Wizard of Odds", Michael Shackelford. This will give you all the info you need to know about the game.

I've played the game before and said "screw the 3-bets." The only way to play is the pair-plus. If you get a pair or better you win, if not the hand is tossed and you lose your bet. The other hand requires a raise if you want to challenge the deaker and I find it is futile to go against the dealer without a pair, so I already would have won if I had a pair and did not need to face off with the dealer. When you challenge the dealer with your raise you can still lose the hand even with a pair if the dealers hand is higher. Pair-Plus only, flushes and straights I find are more common than getting pairs.

newton, thats what was goin thru my mind exactly as i was watchin the game which led to me chking these numbers out ..........turns out the house edge is slightly greater plying pairs plus only , but your swings will be a lot smaller as you are putting les $ in play, but overall it's a bad game not matter which way you you play it

Newton- You're on crack if you think flushes and straights are more common than pairs..

I've been dealing this game for a while now, and play it occasionally when I go gambling.. It beats the hell out of Let it Ride and Carribean Stud..

Fellas the Top bet, which is the PAIR PLUS is where you make your money on the game.

Flush 4/1
Straight 6/1
3of a kind 30/1
straight flush 40/1.....sometime 50/1
