Lock of the week

When I first saw this matchup two weeks ago, I immediately circled the day on the calendar knowing full well that it would be an opportunity to cash in a big play. The spread is a point higher than I expected, but it doesn't matter -- Michigan is going to thrash Indiana tonight. The Hoosiers are a disgrace to the Big Ten and have played some of the worst basketball I've ever seen from a BCS team. Let's re-visit Dec. 22 when Indiana hosted Northeastern, yes Northeastern, and lost by 13 points. I remember it very well, I backed the Hoosiers and they looked pewtrid in every aspect of the game. Indiana turned the ball over an astonishing 21 times, shot 4-14 from deep and allowed a middle-of-the-pack team from the CAA to run them out of Assembly Hall. It was miserable. And Michigan is only laying seven points? Please. The Wolverines have established themselves as one of the nation's best teams by knocking off two Top 5 teams in Duke and Michigan and those games were without Laval Lucas-Perry, who was sitting out due to transfer rules. The former Arizona Wildcat has been a spark plug, averaging 12 points on 50 percent shooting from three-point land. Michigan boasts perhaps the best inside-outside combo in the Big Ten with Manny Harris (18.8, 7.6, 4.9) and DeShawn Sims (16.8, 8.8) and the Wolverines pose several mismatch problems for Indiana on both ends of the floor. The Hoosiers start four freshman, all of which have shown their age and inexperience by often getting into foul trouble and trying to force bad passes and shots. This bruised and battered Hoosiers squad has lost their last four games including home losses against aforementioned Northeastern by 13 points and Lipscomb (what the fuck) by 5. Eric Gordon is gone. D.J. White is gone. And there's nothing that can help Indiana tonight. Lay the points as Michigan loads up by double digits and wins this one running away.
PICK: Michigan (-8) - 40 dimes

other play

Not to be confused with the Blue Devils, who host the Davidson Currys tonight on ESPN, Duquesne is one of the better mid-major teams in the country in the very competitive Atlantic-10. Xavier, Dayton, Rhode Island and St. Joseph's also call this conference home, so you know that Duquesne gets tested year in and year out. Speaking of being tested, the Dukes have played Duke, Pittsburgh and West Virginia this season and while the first two were downright ugly, Duquesne played West Virginia all the way down to the wire before losing by only five points. In fact, since losing to Old Dominion three weeks ago, the Dukes have won their last four games by an impressive average of 15 points. Ron Everhart has definitely shifted gears and his guys are playing with a newfound vengeance. It all starts with senior guard Aaron Johnson (17 points, 6 rebounds per game), who has been on an absolute tear on said winning streak. Johnson's superb play has caused double teams by the defense, which has opened up doors for Damian Saunders and Bill Clark down low. The Dukes are very versatile offensively and their inside-out style of offense suits them incredibly well against smaller ballclubs like Charlotte. After a few lumps last month, Duquesne has found its niche and I like their chances against a bad road team (2-5 SU and ATS) tonight. Lay the small chalk and roll with the Dukes.
PICK: Duquesne (-3.5) - 10 dimes
