Very Early Prediction. I will bang this when the futures come out.

I will preface this by saying I am a huge Yankees fan. So it really pains me to say this....

Mets will win the NL East in 2005.

I honestly think this is a 2 team race...I assume the Marlins will be the favorite and therefore there will be some good PLUS money value in this Mets team.

1. Mets
2. Marlins
3. Phillies
4. Braves
5. No Name

The Mets have a very good rotation now...

1. Pedro
2. Glavine
3. Benson
4. Trachsel
5. Zambrano

They have very good tablesetters.

1. Reyes - MUST stay healthy.
2. Matsui

They dont have a very good 3-4-5-6 but I am sure they will make changes.

3. Floyd
4. Piazza
5. Wright - Stud in the making
6. Cameron

Their bullpen isnt great, but no team has a great pen.

I really think the Mets have a shot at this division. Hell, they were contending with a sub .500 record in July.

I hate the Mets but I cant ignore the assumed value.

LOL, the Mets are a joke.

Pedro is nice, Glavine sucks, Benson is even worse, Trachsel is solid #4/5, Zambrano can be good, but anyone who puts 1.5 runners on base per inning is bound to get shelled. Throw in a bum elbow, and yup you have the same old **** ass Mets.

The lineup, Reyes must stay healthy, I agree, Kaz needs to learn how to not strike out once a game, Floyd is OK at best, Piazza should ( I hope he does) rebound, Wright is already a stud, Cameron is awful, I don't want Delgado, he aint that good either.

It's the same old **** with the Mets, false hope.

And I hate to say all of the abovem because unfortunately, I am a Mets fan. Let's see what else happens though, but definitely don't get fooled by that staff. Benson was drafted first I believe, but for all intensive purposes he has sucked every year he pitched in the majors,....fine, maybe not sucked, but a 3rd starter at best. Glavine SUCKED after the all star break and is 38 I think, which doesn't bode well for him, although with his style, we'll cut him some slack but he certainly isn't feared as he was witht he Braves.

Benson is a 3rd starter and thats where he is.
Trachsel is a 4th starter and thats where he is.
Zambrano is a 5th starter with potential to be a 3 and thats where he is.

This is a good rotation.

If Reyes and Kaz can stay healthy and get on base, they can cause alot of havoc.

I hate the Mets but they are a sleeper.

If Mulder is healthy there is no way the Cards wont win the central.

Superb lineup and now a true ace.

I will predict the playoff contending teams in each division now....subject to change. I will finalize this in March.

AL East:
Yankees
Red Sox

AL Central:
Twins
Indians
Tigers

AL West:
Angels

NL East:
Braves
Mets
Marlins
Phillies

NL Central:
Cardinals
Astros
Cubs

NL West
Giants
Padres
Dodgers

There are 4 divisions in which one of 3 teams can really win the division....this may leatd to good future value opps. They are:
NL: East, Central, West
AL: Central

The only division that I believe is not in doubt is the AL West. Anaheim should win this division with ease.

The AL East is a 2 team race. The Yankees look to be the favorite with their offseason pickups.

The AL Central is a 3 team race. The Indians are young and should be better this year. A healthy AAron Boone could help too. The Tigers are big spenders and they will be better. The Twins have Santana and some nice young bats with a great defense. No favorite there.

The NL East is up for grabs. No team should be the favorite.

The NL Central is a 3 team race. The Cards got much better with Mulder. They should be the favorite, but if Wade Miller and Pettitte are healthy and Beltran re-signs, the Astros are a contender. The Cibs chances hinge on Prior's health. Alou and Sosa look to be gone but they still have nice bats with Nomar, Lee, Aramis, Patterson etc.

The NL West looks like the Giants should be the favorites with the pickups of Matheny and Visquel, but the ongoing off field Bonds tension may hurt them a bit. Padres are young and have some great young arms. They can make a run. Somehow the Dodgers are always in the thick of things. If they pick up a great bat they will be in the thick of things again.

I'd have to disagree with a couple statements. The Met's rotation is acceptable, not good. Acceptable. In that Ballpark the Pedro should thrive when healthy. Glavine will end up as the 3. They have no #2 starter, more like a 1, 2 3's, and 2 4-5 types.

The Table setters are sh*t, and I mean it. Reyes doesn't get on base (.270 OBP). Matsui with a .330 OBP. I just dont see how these guys are great at all. To see great table setters look at Florida.

Their bullpen blows. Good closer, everyone else sucks badly. Mike Dejean?!?! Felix Heredia?!?! Don't think so.

They are starting a rookie in CF until June. (Cameron Wrist surgery).

Check this site for the opening day lineup. http://www.theinsidepitch.com/ROS_NYM.html

With this pitching, they would need a monster lineup, or at least a lineup that could get on base. I love Wright. Piazza will struggle to get 400 ab's from here on out in his career. The Met's will put lots of runners on base with their staff, and will keep them in the dugout when they are at bat.

What about the Braves?
What about Florida? Philly?

Hey MC,

I'm awake at this hour because baseball is less than 3 months away. (I recognize the illness of that statement, but I feel I'm in good company here.) Trying to research what I'm sure someone already has -- individual pitch counts an their effect on next-game performance.

Was wondering what other research you use for handicapping -- other than simply knowing the game. Do you subscribe to historical trends, even if it's just for the pitcher named? Or do you handicap strictly from game to game?

Anyone's thoughts are appreciated.

Every day or so I will give some helpful info until we get up to the season....

Besides the big 10 pitchers.....Randy, Schilling, Pedro, Santana, Prior, Clemens, Schmidt, Oswalt, Hudson, and Mulder....here are 3 pitchers who you may get decent prices on and I am telling you they will perform like top 5 pitchers throughout the season.

1. Oliver Perez -- Pirates
2. Ben Sheets -- Brewers
3. Jake Peavy -- Padres

I would always take these pitchers and always take the under when these 3 guys pitch.

Here are some staggering stats for these 3 guys.

Perez: 2.90 era, 239 K's in 198 innings. Was dominant in the 2nd half.
Sheets: 2.69 era, 0.98 whip, 264 K's JUST 32 BB's
Peavy: 2.27 era, 15-6.

MadCapper,
Impressive stats. Since you said in your last post you would be regularly posting tips for handicapping BB, I won't ask a lot of stupid questions. But, can you give a first time BB handicapper some advice. I am planning to start playing baseball this season seriously and wanted to hear some quick advice from an obviously accomplished player. Thanks man.

JG,

Hey. how are you.

There is ALOT that goes into capping baseball. Here are some of things I look at...

1. Streaks...whos hot and whos not!
2. Home/Away Records.
3. Batters past performances against pitcher/Pitchers past performance against batter.
4. VALUE....search hard enough and you can find some very good value on some of the less popular pitchers.

There is ALOT more that I look into before making a play, but these 4 are near the top for me.

I will elaborate on the tools I use as the season draws closer.

I never bet a favorite over -160 and I rarely bet a fav over -150. I bet alot of PLUS money plays and most of my plays come from the +140 to -140 range.

We will exchange notes as the season progresses.

No problem. I will be giving out a max of 3 to 4 plays per day for this season. I use full game, 1st 5 innings, team totals, dog rl's for the majority of my plays.

Should be a great season.

Here are a few teams besides the big 4 (Angels, Cardinals, Yankees, Red Sox) whom you should feel good about betting the overs unless against a dominant pitcher:

1. Orioles
2. Indians
3. Tigers
