3 killed when driver plows into Okla. State parade
Police said a drunk driver plowed into the Oklahoma State Homecoming parade Saturday, killing three bystanders.
The driver, Adacia Chambers, 25, was arrested and jailed on suspicion of driving under the influence, Stillwater Police Capt. Kyle Gibbs said. Other injured people were taken to Stillwater Medical Center for treatment. Police didn’t immediately release any details about the three dead, and university officials said the homecoming game would still be played.
“Tragically we lost three. Hopefully we don’t lose any more,” said OSU President Burns Hargis in an afternoon press conference. “The Cowboy family is pulling together. Unfortunately we’ve had to do it before, and we’ll do it again.”
Gibbs declined to discuss the evidence against Chambers, and asked that any witnesses with photos and videos to contact investigators.
“We are heartbroken at this tragedy," Stillwater Mayor Gina Noble said.
The car was not part of the parade, according to police. Photographs posted by witnesses showed a silver four-door sedan crashed into a curb, surrounded by police tape.
Witness Dave Kapple told the Stillwater News Press that “people were flying everywhere” after the vehicle barreled into the crowd. The accident occurred by the intersection of Hall of Fame and Main Street.
Oklahoma State's homecoming famously attracts huge crowds to Stillwater each year. This year, the undefeated Cowboys are scheduled to play winless Kansas at 3:30 p.m. ET on FS1.
