Texier scores in OT, Blue Jackets beat Sabres 4-3
October 7, 2019
ShareFacebookTwitterDiggMySpace

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) Rookie Alexandre Texier scored 2:08 into overtime to lift the Columbus Blue Jackets to a 4-3 win over the Buffalo Sabres on Monday night.

Texier beat Linus Ullmark from the right circle off a quick pass from Nick Foligno to give the Blue Jackets their first win of the season.

Victor Olofsson scored for the Sabres, who had pulled the goalie on the power play to create a 6-on-4 advantage, with 1:14 left in the game to tie the score and force the extra period.

Foligno, Oliver Bjorkstrand and Cam Atkinson also scored for the Blue Jackets, who had dropped their first two games of the season by a combined 10-3 score. They outshot Buffalo 44-18.

Joonas Korpisalo had 15 saves for Columbus.

Marcus Johansson and Jeff Skinner also scored for Buffalo and Ullmark, making his first start of the season, had 40 saves.

Bjorkstrand, playing in his 200th NHL game, got his first goal of the season with 1:51 left in the first when he grabbed a carom off the back boards and shot from a sharp angle, bouncing the puck in off Ullmark's back.

The Blue Jackets struck again quickly when Atkinson - just 9 seconds into a power play - scored from the bottom of the right circle off a sharp behind-the-net feed from Alexander Wennberg.

Early in the second period, it was Buffalo's turn to capitalize on a power play. Johansson, signed as an unrestricted free agent in the summer, got his first goal with the Sabres on a one-timer from the right circle to cut Columbus' lead to 2-1.

Skinner tied the score for Buffalo later in the second when he picked Ryan Murray's pocket in the defensive zone on the Blue Jackets' transition and rifled a shot past Korpisalo from 30 feet.

Foligno batted in a bouncing puck amid heavy traffic to give Columbus the lead again on a power play 6:46 into the third.

NOTES: Columbus F Sonny Milano replaced Josh Anderson, who was injured Saturday in a 7-2 loss to the Pittsburgh Penguins. ... Blue Jackets D Markus Nutivaara replaced Dean Kukan after being a healthy scratch Saturday. ... Columbus rookie F Emil Bemstrom got his first NHL point with an assist on Foligno's goal.

Sabres: Host Montreal on Wednesday night.

Blue Jackets: Host Anaheim on Friday night.

Pietrangelo scores tiebreaker, Blues beat Maple Leafs 3-2
October 7, 2019
ShareFacebookTwitterDiggMySpace

TORONTO (AP) Alex Pietrangelo scored the tiebreaking goal in the third period, leading the St. Louis Blues to a 3-2 victory over the Toronto Maple Leafs on Monday night.

Oskar Sundqvist and Brayden Schenn also scored for the defending champions, who have earned points in their first three games this season (2-0-1). Jordan Binnington stopped 32 shots.

Frederik Gauthier and William Nylander scored for Toronto, which has dropped two straight (2-1-1). Frederik Andersen finished with 26 saves.

The Blues scored the decisive goal at 7:51 of the third when David Perron found a pinching Pietrangelo, who beat a down-and-out Andersen from a tight angle at the bottom of the faceoff circle for his second of the season. Pietrangelo also earned his 400th career point and 23rd game-winner to break a tie with Al MacInnis for the most by a defenseman in franchise history.

St. Louis had a chance to add to its lead when Toronto defenseman Jake Muzzin went off for slashing with 4:57 left, but the a(;e Leafs had the best chance when Binnington robbed Ilya Mikheyev with his right pad off the rush.

Toronto pressed with Andersen on the bench for the extra skater, but couldn't find a way past Binnington and the Blues' stout, battle-tested defense.

The Blues opened the scoring at 8:30 of the second when Sundqvist - the Blues' fourth-line center - moved in on Andersen and fired a slap shot from the top of the faceoff circle.

The Maple Leafs tied it when Jason Spezza batted a puck out of the air to Gauthier, who banged in his second of the season with 8:26 left.

Fans at Scotiabank barely had a chance to sit back down when they were on their feet again 24 seconds later when Nylander finished off a beautiful passing play with Cody Ceci and Andreas Johnsson for his second.

St. Louis, which went from last in the overall standings in January to winning the franchise's first Stanley Cup in June, pushed back late in the period and tied it with 47.3 seconds left on the clock when Schenn beat Andersen between the pads after Toronto defenseman Morgan Rielly turned the puck over.

Binningtong was helped out by two posts in a busy first period.

Toronto center Alexander Kerfoot hit the post just two minutes in after moving in alone on Binnington. Andersen snapped his glove out at the other end to deny Schenn after the Maple Leafs were caught running around in the defensive zone for an extended period.

Auston Matthews, who had five goals in three games to open the season, then rang another shot off the post behind Binnington on a Toronto power play before Nylander couldn't quite control a loose puck with the St. Louis goalie down and out.

NOTES: Last season, Nylander didn't get his second goal until his 24th game following a long contract impasse that dragged into December. ... Spezza was a healthy scratch for two of Toronto's first three games. He suited up at home for the first time and registered his first point with the Maple Leafs after signing for the league minimum in free agency on July 1. .. Binnington, a native of nearby Richmond Hill, Ontario, made his first-ever start at Scotiabank Arena after not grabbing the No. 1 job in St. Louis until early January last season. The 26-year-old did beat Toronto 3-2 in overtime at Enterprise Center on Feb. 19.

Tuesday’s 6-pack

Interesting spreads for this week’s college football:

— Oklahoma (-10) vs Texas

— Iowa State (-9.5) @ West Virginia

— Washington State @ Arizona State (-2.5)

— Washington (-5.5) @ Arizona

— Cincinnati (-7) @ Houston

— Penn State (-3.5) @ Iowa

Quote of the Day
“I thought he represented himself well. He gave us a chance. Gotta tip your cap to him. You’re talking about a guy who didn’t make our opening 53 and all of his things, we know his story. But you also got to acknowledge that he’s done some good things at every step along the way through the team developing process when given an opportunity and that’s why he’s in the position that he’s in and that’s probably why he made the positive showing as positive as he did today.”
Mike Tomlin, talking about his new QB, Devlin Hodges

Tuesday’s quiz
Which NFL team was the first to both win and lose a Super Bowl?

Monday’s quiz
Russell Wilson played college football for NC State, Wisconsin.

Sunday’s quiz
Tampa Bay Rays played the Phillies the one time they made the World Series.

***************************

Tuesday’s List of 13: Nobody asked me, but……

13) 49ers 31, Browns 3— Monday at the Mirage Casino here in Las Vegas, someone wagered $120K to win $52K on the 49ers’ money line in this game. Good night for that guy.

— Mayfield completed 8-22 passes for 100 yards; a WR did drop an easy TD that turned into an INT when game was 14-3, but still, he had a miserable night.
— Total yardage was 446-180; luckily for TV networks, only one more primetime game for the overrated Browns.

12) Patrick Mahomes tweaked his ankle Sunday night when one of his own linemen stepped on the ankle while he was pass blocking.

Colts’ defense blitzed on 41.9% of Kansas City’s dropbacks, and they were effective.

11) Redskins fired coach Jay Gruden early Monday morning, which won’t help anything; he was 35-49-1 in Washington, with one playoff appearance.

Washington’ problem is that their owner is horrendous and he meddles; here are the Redskins’ head coaches since Daniel Snyder bought the ball club in 1999:

1994-2000: Norv Turner 50-60-1
2001: Marty Schottenheimer 8-8
2002-03: Steve Spurrier 12-20
2004-07: Joe Gibbs 31-36
2008-09: Jm Zorn 12-20
2010-13: Mike Shanahan 24-41
2014-19: Jay Gruden 35-49-1

Bill Callahan is the Redskins’ interim coach; he also replaced Jon Gruden as the Raiders’ coach when Gruden jumped to the Buccaneers.

10) Steelers kicked off to start overtime Sunday, which is very unusual, since a TD on the first possession ends the game. Ravens punted on their first drive, so it didn’t come into play, and Mike Tomlin was celebrating like they won the game when Baltimore punted, but Steelers fumbled and lost the game anyway.

Will be interesting to see how the Pittsburgh media deals with Tomlin if he has his first losing season as a head coach- they’re 1-4 right now, with the 3rd-string QB starting for a while.

9) Oregon State executed a drop kick/onside kick against UCLA Saturday; was pretty cool to see, and it worked like a charm. Beavers led 21-0 before first quarter was half over.

8) With Devlin Hodges expected to start at QB for the Steelers in LA Sunday, Paxton Lynch, a former 1st round draft pick of the Broncos, is going to be Hodges’ backup.

7) Quote of the Day, part II:
“I (bleep)ing love this!!!!”
Younger guy sitting in front of me the other night in the Aria sportsbook; he was just sitting there taking in all the action, when a couple of his bets won, he started yelling. Good stuff.

6) Blue Ribbon Basketball’s preseason top 6 teams:
Michigan State, Kentucky, Kansas, Duke, Florida, Louisville

5) Tampa Bay 10, Astros 3— Rays drew 32,251 for a 1:00 playoff game, and the TV guys were raving about what a great crowd it was. These teams play Game 4 at 4;30 tomorrow, will be interesting to see what they draw for that game.

4) Cardinals 5, Braves 4 (10)— Molina tied game with an 8th inning single, then won it with a sac fly in the 10th. Decisive Game 5 is Wednesday in Atlanta.

3) Tennessee Titans cut kicker Cairo Santos Monday, after he went 0-4 on field goals in their ugly 14-7 home loss to Buffalo Sunday; they’re expected to sign former Bears’ K Cody Parkey to replace Santos.

2) Kansas Jayhawks fired their offensive coordinator Sunday after only six games; you wonder what thats all about. The new OC has a small-college background- the NAIA team he coached LY averaged 55 ppg and 540.3 yards/game.

Jayhawks rank 101st nationally in scoring, 102nd in yards gained, 104th in passing and 116th in first downs per game.

Remember that college assistant coaches are equal parts tacticians/recruiters; players win games, and Kansas is obviously behind its Big X opponents in talent level.

1) Michael D. Smith posted this on Twitter Sunday:

2004 draft class ranked by career passing yards:
56,545 Ben Roethlisberger
56,537 Eli Manning
56,121 Philip Rivers
24,887 Matt Schaub
6,271 JP Losman
2,370 Luke McCown
929 Jim Sorgi
718 Craig Krenzel
342 John Navarre
195 Cody Pickett
136 Matt Mauck
53 Larry Fitzgerald

SUCKING IN THE STEEL CITY

You could forgive the Winnipeg Jets for wanting to skip their trip to Pittsburgh as they tangle with the Penguins on Tuesday night. The Winnipeg franchise has been downright abysmal in Pittsburgh in recent history, winning just four of their previous 31 visits overall.

As you might have guessed with two of the NHL's most prolific teams involved, their recent encounters have been high-scoring for the most part; the teams are averaging 6.7 goals per game in their last six meetings and have combined for seven more tallies in four of those games. The Pittsburgh-Over parlay should have some appeal here.

DUCKING THE TREND

It's rare to see an NHL matchup that feels like a sure-fire Under play – but that's where the Anaheim Ducks and Detroit Red Wings might find themselves Tuesday night at Little Caesars Arena if past trends are any indication. The Ducks and Wings have scored five or fewer goals in four of their previous five head-to-head meetings while averaging just four combined goals per game over that span.

Furthermore, Anaheim is coming off a 2018-19 campaign in which it averaged the fewest road goals in the NHL (2.17), while Detroit finished 25th out of 31 teams in home scoring (2.83 goals per game).

HASN'T DONE JACK

Jack Eichel has improved his goal total in each of the previous two seasons and should threaten the 30-goal mark this year – but that doesn't necessarily make him a strong goal prop choice as the Buffalo Sabres host the Montreal Canadiens on Wednesday.

Eichel has faced the Canadiens more than any other team in his four-year NHL career – and Montreal has kept him largely at bay, holding him to just one goal in 16 career meetings. But while Eichel is almost certainly a fade candidate on the goal prop, he's still a decent bet to record a point, having put up nine assists in those 16 games vs. the Canadiens.

GOALIE PROFILE: MARTIN JONES, SAN JOSE SHARKS

Jones will almost certainly be happy to not see the Vegas Golden Knights for a while after being victimized for eight goals in two games against Vegas to open the season. And while two bad games isn't likely to send Jones to the bench for the long term, it'll be important for him to be better this week as the winless Sharks gear up for early-week road tests against Nashville and Chicago.

The Predators game, in particular, will be a good litmus test for Jones, who is 4-6-2 with a 3.39 goals-against average and an .879 save percentage all-time against Nashville.

INJURY UPDATES: F EVGENI MALKIN, PITTSBURGH PENGUINS

Pittsburgh fans are holding their breath after watching Malkin leave Saturday's 7-2 victory over the Columbus Blue Jackets with an undisclosed injury. The 33-year-old headed to the locker room and didn't return after tripping into the boards over the weekend. Malkin has one goal in two games this season, and an extended absence would leave a hole in the Pittsburgh offense despite the Penguins trouncing the Blue Jackets following Malkin's departure.

Malkin was limited to 68 games last season; the Penguins were 6-5-3 SU while averaging just 2.36 goals in the 14 games he missed.

HAT TRICK TRENDS

• Bettors looking for a totals edge early in the season haven't been able to find much of one, with oddsmakers looking like wizards so far. Sixteen games have gone Over the total so far, while the other 16 have gone Under. Overtime/shootout games are 4-2 O/U through the opening week, while non-OT games are 12-14 O/U.

• Home favorites have enjoyed a significant edge through the opening week of the 2019-20 regular season. Home faves are a blistering 18-3-4 so far, good for a 72-percent success rate that is sure to normalize soon. Home teams overall have won 63.6 percent of the time; road favorites have also been decent so far, going 5-2-1 SU.

• It might be the early stages of the campaign, but Ian Walsh is the referee to target if you're craving an Over play. Walsh has officiated three games so far, and has seen a whopping 25 goals scored in those contests; his 8.33 goals-per-game average is the highest of any referee to have worked at least three games.

Dzingel scores twice as Hurricanes open with 4 straight wins
October 8, 2019
By The Associated Press

SUNRISE, Fla. (AP) Ryan Dzingel scored two goals and the Carolina Hurricanes beat the Florida Panthers 6-3 on Tuesday night for their fourth straight victory to begin the season, equaling the best start in franchise history.

Teuvo Teravainen and Jordan Staal each had a goal and an assist for Carolina, which scored four times in the first period and opened a 5-0 lead after 21+ minutes. Dougie Hamilton also scored, and Sebastian Aho added an empty-net goal. James Reimer stopped 47 shots against the team that traded him last summer.

Andrei Svechnikov and Haydn Fleury each had two assists as the Hurricanes matched the 4-0-0 start by the Hartford Whalers in 1995-96, before the club moved to Carolina.

Evgenii Dadonov, Keith Yandle and MacKenzie Weegar scored for the Panthers. Aleksander Barkov had two assists.

DUCKS 3, RED WINGS 1

DETROIT (AP) - Nick Ritchie scored the tiebreaking goal midway through the third period, and Anaheim beat Detroit.

The Ducks improved to 3-0, matching the best start in franchise history. Anaheim also won its first three in 2006-07 and last season.

Jakob Silfverberg had a goal and an assist and Rickard Rakell also scored for the Ducks. John Gibson made 31 saves.

Filip Hronek scored for Detroit, which lost for the first time this season. Jimmy Howard stopped 26 shots.

OILERS 5, ISLANDERS 2

UNIONDALE, N.Y. (AP) - James Neal had his first career four-goal game and Edmonton beat New York.

Zack Kassian also scored as Edmonton won its first road game of the season and improved to 3-0 for the first time in 11 years. Connor McDavid had three assists, Leon Draisatl added two and Mikko Koskinen stopped 25 shots.

Anthony Beauvillier and Matt Martin scored for the Islanders. Semyon Varlamov, signed to a four-year deal in the offseason, made his second start of the season but was pulled in the second period after giving up four goals on 19 shots. Thomas Greiss came on and stopped seven of the eight shots he faced.

STARS 4, CAPITALS 3, OT

WASHINGTON (AP) - Tyler Seguin scored in overtime to give Dallas its first win of the season.

Seguin ended the Stars' season-opening, three-game losing streak 43 seconds into overtime off a pass from linemate Alexander Radulov. Dallas avoided a four-game skid to open a season that would've matched a franchise worst.

Radulov scored in the third period and Nick Caamano had the first of his NHL career. The Stars bounced back from Nicklas Backstrom's tying goal for Washington with 30 seconds left in regulation.

Dallas goaltender Ben Bishop stopped 29 of the 32 shots he faced, and Roope Hintz scored his fourth goal in as many games.

Capitals center Evgeny Kuznetsov scored less than five minutes into his season debut after being suspended the first three games for inappropriate conduct. Defenseman John Carlson also scored for Washington, which has lost back-to-back games in overtime.

JETS 4, PENGUINS 1

PITTSBURGH (AP) - Ville Heinola scored his first NHL goal to lead Winnipeg past Pittsburgh.

The Jets got their first win in Pittsburgh since returning to the NHL as an expansion team in 2011.

Tucker Poolman scored his second NHL goal and Neal Pionk his second of the season as three defensemen scored for an inexperienced Jets blue line, which combined for 350 career NHL games.

Nikolaj Ehlers scored his first of the season, while Patrik Laine and Mark Scheifele both had three assists for the Jets, who closed a season-opening, four-game road trip. Connor Hellebuyck made 36 saves in his second start of the season.

Sidney Crosby scored his first of the season for Pittsburgh.

PREDATORS 5, SHARKS 2

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) - Roman Josi scored two goals to lead Nashville past San Jose.

Kyle Turris, Filip Forsberg and Dante Fabbro also scored for the Predators, who have won two of three to start the season.

Brent Burns had a goal and an assist and Evander Kane also scored for the struggling Sharks, now 0-4.

Josi scored the game's first two goals, opening the scoring early in the opening period.

KINGS 4, FLAMES 3, OT

CALGARY, Alberta (AP) - Drew Doughty scored a power-play goal 50 seconds into overtime to give Los Angeles the victory over Calgary.

The Kings picked up their first win after falling 6-5 in their season opener to the Edmonton Oilers on Saturday.

Tyler Toffoli had a goal and an assist, with Sean Walker and Ilya Kovalchuk also scoring for Los Angeles. Jeff Campbell made 37 saves.

Matthew Tkachuk countered with two goals and an assist, and Noah Hanifin also scored for Calgary. David Rittich turned away 25 shots.

Johansson scores in OT, Sabres top Canadiens 5-4
October 9, 2019
By The Associated Press

BUFFALO, N.Y. (AP) Marcus Johansson scored 1:30 into overtime, leading the Buffalo Sabres to a 5-4 win over the Montreal Canadiens on Wednesday night.

Jack Eichel scored twice and added two assists, and the Sabres improved to 3-0-1, the team's best start since opening the 2009-10 season 4-0-1. Rookie Victor Olofsson matched an NHL record in becoming the fourth NHL player to score first six career goals on the power play in a game Buffalo converted two of five opportunities.

Jeff Skinner also scored and defenseman Rasmus Dahlin had two assists, while Carter Hutton stopped 23 shots and improved to 3-0.

Joel Armia scored twice and added an assist in a game the Canadiens rallied from a two-goal, third-period deficit. Jesperi Kotkaniemi and Ben Chiarot, with the tying goal with 7:06 remaining, also scored for the Canadiens (1-0-2)

Keith Kincaid stopped 34 shots.

The game was decided just as Montreal's Paul Byron exited the penalty box while serving a slashing penalty.

FLYERS 4, DEVILS 0

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Carter Hart stopped 25 shots for his first career shutout to lift Philadelphia past New Jersey.

Ivan Provorov scored for the Flyers, and so did Kevin Hayes, Sean Couturier and Travis Konency as part of a three-goal third period in their home opener.

Hart shined in the Philly debut of new coach Alain Vigneault, securing the shutout in his 33rd NHL game.

Armadillo: Thursday's six-pack

Trends for this week’s NFL games:

— New England is 7-1 ATS in last eight games as a non-divisional home favorite.

— Jets are 4-9 ATS in last 13 games vs NFC teams.

— Miami covered twice of last nine games vs NFC teams.

— Bengals are 9-3 in last 12 games as a road underdog.

— Dallas is 9-3-1 ATS in its last 13 games as a non-divisional road favorite.

— Falcons covered three of last 16 games outside their division.

**********

Armadillo: Thursday's List of 13: Doing some thinking out loud……

I had a good writeup all set for this spot today, then I watched the Dodgers’ game Wednesday night and had to start all over again…….

13) Nationals 7, Dodgers 3 (10)— Tough night for LA fans; Dodgers blew a 3-1 8th inning lead, giving up back/back home runs. Howie Kendrick hit a 10th inning grand slam for the win.

Clayton Kershaw has never allowed home runs on consecutive pitches in the regular season; it has happened to him twice in playoff games.

12) There have been two extra inning grand slams in playoff history; Howie Kendrick last night and Nelson Cruz in Game 2 of the 2011 ALCS.

Max Scherzer was at both games; he was the starter for the losing Tigers in that 2011 game.

Twins exercised Cruz’ $12M team option for 2020; the way he hit this year, that is a bargain.

11) Kendrick has played 14 years in the major league and has hit two grand slams, both of which came in extra innings.

10) Road teams are now 4-9 all-time in winner-take-all games that went to extra innings, with three of the four wins coming in the last four years.

9) Cardinals 13, Braves 1— St Louis is fourth team ever to score 10+ runs in an inning in a playoff game:

1929— Philadelphia A’s Game 4 of WS vs Chicago (B7)
1968— Detroit Game 6 of WS vs St Louis (T3)
2002— LA Angels Game 5 of ALCS vs Milwaukee (B7)
2019— St Louis Game 5 of NLDS vs Atlanta (T1)

8) Atlanta Braves hold a dubious major league record; they’re the only team to be eliminated from the playoffs at home for five consecutive seasons (2000-04).

7) Home teams in winner-take-all playoff games:
MLB— 56-60 (48.3%)
NHL— 133-91 (59.4%)
NBA— 177-62 (74.1%)

6) San Antonio Spurs have gone over their season win total 11 of the last 14 years.

5) Someone at the Westgate SuperBook wagered $5,000 at 8-1 odds this week that New England will finish the regular season 16-0.

4) Since 2016, teams coming off a loss are 5-21-1 ATS when playing the Patriots.

3) When Oregon trailed the Cal Bears 7-0 at halftime Saturday, it was the first scoreless 1st half for the Ducks since a 30-24 home loss to Indiana in 2004.

2) Why did the Houston Rockets used to be the NBA franchise worth the most money? Because Yao Ming played for Houston, and the Rockets’ resulting lucrative connection to China was worth a boatload of cash. Notice I said “was”

One critical tweet from Rockets’ GM Daryl Morey has turned the Chinese government against the NBA and it is unclear whether the damage can be undone, which is going to cost everyone associated with the league a lot of money. A lot. Mucho dinero.

1) There were reports Wednesday that NBA teams preparing for the 2020-21 season are thinking the salary cap could drop as much as 15% after this season, all because of one 6-word tweet.
