Was in Vegas and at the Westgate a few months ago and played some British Open futures...played about 850 on the British Open, including a few $50 plays on 300 to 1 shots. Had played the Masters the same way when I was there. The Irish Open was coming up in a few days and Rory McIlroy was 6 to 1, and Jon Rahm was 7 to 1. Rahm had played well the week before. McIlroy was minus 120 in the head to head matchup. Rahm even money. I decided that I was going to take a shot and play $2,700 on Rahm against McIlroy, as they had about 10 head to head matchups for the Irish Open. Was denied. They would only let me play 1K. The guy went into the back, checked my plays, and came back and said your last bet was 50 bucks...we're not going to let you all of the sudden play 50 times your average bet...lol. I mean, my last exact bet was $50 on a 300 to 1 shot in the British Open still three weeks away. So I didn't bet anything. Well, I decided to see if any other place had the match up, and William Hill had it, and Rahm was better odds...plus 105. Asked to play $2,700....denied. But bet $1K on Rahm.
The next day I go back to the Westgate and now Rahm was better odds plus 125...lol. So bet 1K....went back later and bet another 900 at Westgate at plus 110 or 115. I won my matchup plays as Rahm crushed McIlroy, though Rahm barely made the cut and was down 4 after the first round. McIlroy has played very well since and I am glad I refrained from playing against him in the British, as he finished tied for 2nd.
The moral of the story is that being denied my original bet was a joke. The Westgate is a very depressing sportsbook, as there are tons of regulars whom haunt the grounds and look like the typical degenerate, whether playing sports or horses. For the big events, it is enjoyable, as the locals are overwhelmed by the influx of visitors....March Madness is cool, and tons of people from various countries were there bright and early for all World Cup matches. They seem to have some nice looking women who come in groups...must be for events at the Westgate. Lots of nice 30 something women who bring their daughters for gymnastics competitions and similar type things. Their Buffet poisoned hundreds of people when I was there. Worst buffet in Vegas.
Lots of good props though, and the golf futures are great, because if you play a long shot months in advance of a major, and he doesn't end up playing, you get refunded. Almost all other books...all that I have seen, do not refund if your guy does not play in a futures bet. Big advantage, especially since the Westgate has pretty good golf odds. I won't be back to Vegas for a few years unless I win my PGA futures bet. $100 on Joaquin Niemann at 150 to 1. He wasn't even in the field until last week, when he got a special invite. Took a shot. The kid is a beast...Rookie on the PGA tour. The last major starts Thursday.
But this football contest by proxy sounds great. You can get a good root.
