I think Pirates can take division this year - Cubs will be tough but I feel like they are way overvalued.

+2050 currently at 5dimes to win it and division at +385 is good value on both bets.

On Monday, Pittsburgh Pirates star Andrew McCutchen repeated his desire to finish his career in Pittsburgh. A day later, the Pirates' general manager said the team plans to talk contract with him at "the appropriate time."

On one hand, GM Neal Huntington said, the Pirates would "love nothing more than to have Andrew McCutchen stay in Pittsburgh an awfully long time."
On the other hand, McCutchen, 29, is under team control for three more seasons. And "three years is an awfully long time," Huntington said.

"At the same time, we do want to honor his interest," Huntington told ESPN on Tuesday. "And at the appropriate time, in the appropriate way, we will look to see if there is a common financial ground that allows us to build a championship team around a given player. And that is always the challenge.

"Any team can basically afford any player. It's just how do you afford championship-caliber players around that one player. And that's where small-market teams, with the lower revenues and, as a result, the lower payrolls, it becomes very challenging to put a huge portion of your payroll in one player for an extended period of time. There's no question that's a challenge.

"So the bottom line comes back to: Will there be an appropriate point in time where we look again to see if we can find that common financial ground, something that makes sense for him, something that makes sense for us, and we believe we're still able to build a championship club around that player, given what we project our payroll and our revenues to be? There's a lot that goes into the equation, a lot more than simply saying we'd love him to stay and him saying he'd love to say. There's a lot that goes into that answer in reality."

On Monday, McCutchen was asked whether he wants to finish his career in Pittsburgh and replied: "I think you know that answer. I don't need to answer that, really. But everyone knows I want to be here. So that's nothing new to anyone."

A five-time All-Star, McCutchen is four years into a six-year, $51.5 million contract he signed in March 2012, as he was approaching his first season of arbitration eligibility.

He is scheduled to make $13 million this season and $14 million in 2017. The Pirates then hold a club option, at $14.5 million, for 2018. So unless the club tears up that deal as part of an extension, he won't rank among the top 20 highest-paid outfielders in any of the next three seasons.

However, McCutchen has said repeatedly that "money doesn't define me." He repeated those sentiments Monday, but when asked if that meant he would take a significant discount to stay in Pittsburgh, he chose his words carefully.

"I don't know what my market value is," McCutchen said. "I haven't discussed that with my agent. So I still stick with the [idea that] money doesn't define me, because it doesn't. But it's not altered like that in this game. No one plays for free. People rarely ever work for free. But you know, whenever that time comes, that time comes. But I'm trying not to think about it too much."

There has been speculation by executives of other clubs that the Pirates are likely to explore a potential extension with McCutchen sooner rather than later, because if they conclude that they can't afford to sign him, they then would have to decide whether it makes sense to trade him when they can get the maximum return. However, Huntington declined to discuss when that "appropriate time" to talk contract might arrive.

"In a perfect world, when that appropriate time comes and we're able to reach that common financial ground, we'll shock the world with an announcement," he said. "Outside of that appropriate time, it's not something we will spend a lot of time on publicly."

Starting at the bottom looking at a longshot

Maybe the Rays and their good pitching or The Angels and Trout could make it to the playoffs for some hedge action.

I can see that...Marlins at +8000 looks tempting too. For some reason they keep standing out to me.

I just wish i had the confidence that you have about the Bucs beating out the Cubs for the division. The Cubs are awfully good and the Pirates i believe have lesser depth than last year, and im talking about quality depth.Damn, their quality depth comes to Sean Rodrigues as being their top player off the bench only cause he can play just about anywhere.

As far as McCutchen goes, i think its a smart move by Hunnington to wait and see what transpires down the road, cause he has been coming down with these nagging injuries lately such as his ribs last season and his back, and i love nothing more than to have him retire there but when he hits his 30's, which he will be 32 when the contract is up,and if he is not up to snuff than you just got stuck with a whole lot of money, and the Pirates don't have money, the Steelers do but the Pirates don't,.....can't figure that one out but that's the way it is

2016 pittsburgh pirates

As we inch closer towards the start of the season i'd like to take a look at the PIRATES.Yes i follow them a lot and have for many, many years. They may be looked at like a team that has not bettered themselves but their farm system is loaded with talent.

1.Allen Hansen-2b-if he can improve on his defensive side then look out cause he has power and can hit for doubles. He is expected to get a shot with KANG not ready til may.

2.well 1b still is the weakest place on the field.I just don't know why they didn't go after LIND in the offseason as JOSH BELL is not ready to be brought up to take the job.

3.At ss hurdle has given the reins to JORDY MERCER as he likes him a lot and its about time he gets a set lineup instead of a different one every other day.

4.JOSH HARRISON will man 3b and if needed he can play anywhere but to keep him there would be a plus.

5.CERVELLI will be behind the plate once again as he was a big spark plug last season for the PIRATES.CHRIS STEWART is their to back him up so we are solid here.

** so if HANSEN don't pan out in spring training for the 2b job SEAN RODRIGUEZ will start the season there and i have no problem with him as his defense makes up for his offensive woes.

The PIRATES probably have the best outfield in baseball, and i said this last year and they proved it.Marte they did sign long term and that was a big move to do as he has a deadly arm and speed and offense is improving very much.McCUTCHEN,well say no more about him as he is as solid as they come and he heads into this season with no nagging injuries as he did last season and is having a nice spring start.POLANCO,this kid just don't know how much talent he has.If he ever just slows down and lets the game come to him then look out cause he already has shown he is one not to run on and he just has to be more patient at the plate. Also a big threat on the bases.

PITCHING-COLE,LIRIANO,NIESE,VOGELSONG,LOCKE,start as the 5 man rotation and i only question VOGELSONG as if he can get his old form back when with the PIRATES but RAY SERAGE can work wonders with his pitchers so i see good things coming from him.LOCKE,when he is on can be the best lefty on the staff as he has shown with some very good outings last season and some not so good ones to.I also expect him to be improved. The thoughts of TYLER GLASNOW is not out of the question either.

The bullpen is looking good again and a bit different as JUAN NICASIO,and YOERVIS MEDINA join TONY WATSON and JARED HUGHES,and ARQUIMEDES CAMINARO leading the way for closer MARK MELANCON the leader in saves last season to close the door again this year.

Lets hope us PIRATE fans that we finally avoid the one game playoff and win the division which will be tough as the CUBS are strong again and the CARDS seem to be a bit down this season as MOLINA is hurting and they have lost a few good players so it just may come down to the final 3 game series with the CUBS,that would be exciting for baseball and for two franchises trying to make a strong name again in baseball.

AT 18-1,OR 20-1 THE PIRATES ARE WORTH A SHOT

can't wait for the season to start

okay cool , good luck on the season , props on being a pirate fan .. i am nerd (not in real life) about baseball prospects and diving deep into systems..im a lil rusty.. but like that theres others into mlb.. allot of people complain about the product but i think it has improved every year since 2010.. the playoffs in particular have been tremendous .. the game play and the youth movement has been great

Not sure what the problem is, but you need to take a step back if there's something personal between you two

Thanks

Guy started a thread for the sole purpose of trolling me 100% unprovoked. I've never even talked to the nerd. And now I'm making him regret doing that.
