The 8 ½ furlong Grade 2 Dwyer Stakes carries a purse of $200k for top three-year-olds. The winner typically goes on to fare well in races like the Jim Dandy Stakes, Haskell Invitational and Travers Stakes. The Belmont Park race will go as race 10 on Saturday.
MORGAN’S GUERRILLA (Ghostzapper x Rutledge Ballado by Saint Ballado): Trainer Michael Maker once believed this colt had Hansen-esque talent, but he has yet to show it. That doesn’t mean he hasn’t been solid though. He was second in a weak rendition of the Illinois Derby in just his third start. The connections wheeled him back on short rest in the Lexington Stakes where he failed to fire. After that, he was second to Stealcase in an optional claiming race. Maker is showing great confidence by racing in this spot. Ramon Dominguez, New York’s top jock, picks up the mount.
FAST FALCON (Awesome Again x My Chickadee by Pleasant Tap): Easy maiden winner at Pimlico in his third try. Then, he surprised most people with a rock solid second place finish in the Easy Goer Stakes next out. The chestnut could be compromised by a projected slow pace. Anna Napravnik rides for trainer Nick Zito.
GUYANA STAR DWEEJ (Eddington x Special Feeling by Pine Bluff): Wow, what a name. He was eased last out in the Belmont Stakes. Before that he couldn’t get close to Unstoppable U in an optional claiming race. It would take a huge step forward for him to impact this race. Jose Ortiz picks up the mount at the behest of trainer Doodnauth Shivmangal.
UNSTOPPABLE U (Exchange Rate x Naseem by Point Given): Connections flew too close to the sun last out when trying the Belmont Stakes. He made a run at a superior colt, Paynter, and was dismissed on his way to a sixth place finish. Junior Alvarado fleeing for another horse certainly doesn’t inspire confidence, but I would rather have Javier Castellano anyway. Today’s competition and distance should be much more to his liking, but the Ken McPeek pupil still has to prove to me that he is of this caliber.
ZETTERHOLM (Silver Train x Holy Wish by Lord at War): The top three in the Preakness were superior to the others in every way. This bay runner was fourth. Before that he scored three easy wins against New York bred company. The closing colt has shown the ability to overcome slow paces before, but it would be nice to see him sitting closer to the pace than he usually does. Junior Alvarado stays aboard for Rick Dutrow.
TEETH OF THE DOG (Bluegrass Cat x Deputy Reality by Deputy Minister): Love the pedigree on this colt. He is built for two turn races. He was acquainted with jockey Joel Rosario last out when they hooked up to win the Easy Goer Stakes by an easy 3 ¾ lengths. He might be compromised by a slow pace in this spot. Michael Matz is the trainer.
MONARCHIC (Forestry x Vole Vole Monamour by Woodman): Pennsylvania bred doesn’t appear to fit, but trainer Eoin Harty isn’t a fool. He must have seen something he liked. It wouldn’t be shocking to see him run a big race. Jose Lezcano gets the call to ride.
