'All Others' favored in opening pool of Derby Future Wager
Churchill Downs' 2009 Kentucky Derby Future Wager (KDFW) begins its 11th year on Thursday when the first of its three betting pools opens with the mutuel field, or "all others," as the favored betting interest.
Churchill Downs oddsmaker Mike Battaglia has installed the "all others" betting interest as the 5-2 morning-line favorite in Pool 1, which opens at noon (EST) on Thursday and concludes at 6 p.m. on Sunday.

Taqarub improved to three wins in as many starts with a front-running 8 1/4-length romp on Monday in the $70,045 Jimmy Winkfield Stakes for three-year-olds at Aqueduct.
In his stakes debut, the Aldebaran colt stumbled at the start but recovered quickly under Alan Garcia and sprinted to the lead. Taqarub opened a clear advantage through an opening quarter in :22.81, extended his lead through a half-mile in :45.78, and powered away in the stretch to prevail as the 0.95-to-1 favorite.
“He stumbled at the break and repositioned himself very quickly,” Garcia said. “After that, he was in control.”
Trained by Kiaran McLaughlin for owner Shadwell Farm, Taqarub completed six furlongs in 1:09.29 on a track rated as fast.
“With the Shadwell connection, we’re all thinking of Bob Witham,” McLaughlin said. Witham broke horses for Shadwell for more than 20 years. He died on December 12 from injuries sustained in a fall at Camden Training Center in Camden, South Carolina.
The Prince finished second as the 1.90-to-1 second choice as part of a coupled entry with stablemate Fellow Crasher, who finished another 1 1/2 lengths back in third.
Taqarub is out of the winning Honor Grades mare Honor Bestowed, a half sister to 1999 champion turf female Soaring Softly and Grade 1 winner Plenty of Grace.
Taqarub began his career with a one-length victory in a six-furlong maiden special weight race on November 11 at Aqueduct and entered the Jimmy Winkfield off a 1 1/4-length score in a six-furlong allowance/optional claiming race on December 4, also at Aqueduct.
“We’re pointing him toward the Fred 'Cappy' Capossela [Stakes on February 15], but he could go to Florida at any time,” McLaughlin said.
