The other thread about closers had me thinking about some 80's baseball. Does anyone remember the 88 O's - they lost their first 21 games and finished 54-107. Pretty bad.

Boddicker was the best player on this team.

Ripken and Murray a very close second.

Lost to Twins (8-11), 4-2
W: Allan Anderson (1-0) L: Mike Boddicker (0-5) S: Mark Portugal (1)

The Orioles set an American League record with their 21st consecutive loss 4–2 to the Twins, breaking the record shared by the 1906 Red Sox and the 1916 and 1943 A's. Ripken suffers through an 0-for-29, not the streak he's looking for.

Speaking of Mike Boddiker, the Red Sox made what might be argualby the worst trade in the 1980's for him in late July of 88. The O's sent Boddiker (only) to Boston for future 50 Home Run guy Brady Anderson and outside chance for hall of fame pitcher Curt Schilling. Granted both Schilling and Anderson were minor leaguers back then but that still has to hurt.

O's traded Lynn at the deadline and got Chris Hoiles who was a solid catcher...I can't believe how bad the lineup for that team is ...

And they also fired Ripken Sr. a career company man and Cal's dad'''

WHO COULD HAVE WON WITH THIS GROUP!?

They brought in Frank Robinson after losing the first 7 games, he lost 14 more straight.

LOL- I do remember the team had lost all those games and came back off a road trip to a sold out Memorial Stadium crowd...this is back in the days when the Birds drew about 25K a night....they finally won before the capacity crowd..

Its all coming back to me...I remember they lost games in every which way, even blowing a few huge leads very late....

This was once the winningest franchise in baseball for 20+ years...we were not use to losing!

Tell you what...if a team these days had 3 starters who could be counted on to have ERAs under 4.5...they wouldn't be half bad.

They may not contend for a playoff spot, but they wouldn't be terrible.

Scary that I remember most or all of these guys.
