It is a new record for track, surpassing 2004 (Smarty Jones). How good was Secretariat? He would have beaten Tonalist by 22 LENGTHS based on his 1973 time.

It's worth noting that as good as Secretariat's Belmont performance was, there were only 5 horses (including Secretariat) that went to post that race. You're more likely to see a horse win the Belmont by 22 lengths, than see a field of 5 for that race.

Outside of the money they race for each race, they don't get a cut of the money wagered. The track and state take their cut out of the pools first then pay out the public the remaining money bet on each race.

Drove up to NY for the race. It was packed there but had a good time. Hit a few exactas early and a late trifecta following some posters in the HorseRacing Forum. Blew it on the last race tho

I'm pretty sure that no one thought that they could beat Secretariat, leading to the short field.

PS They sure were right.
