Lael Stable's DIVINING ROD is confirmed for the 140th Preakness.

Trainer is Amaud Delacour, based at Fair Hill Training Center, Elkton, Md

Listed Jockey is Julien Laparoux

Divining Rod's Sire is TAPIT and the Dam is PRECIOUS KITTEN.

Race record for the colt is 2-1-2 in his 5 starts with Earnings of $225,000.

An emphatic three-length victory in the Coolmore Lexington (G3) on April 11 at Keeneland punched the Preakness ticket for Divining Rod, a dark bay son of Grade 1 winner Tapit making what will be his sixth lifetime start.

Bred in Kentucky by his owners, Mr. and Mrs. Roy Jackson, Divining Rod wasn’t unveiled until late November, winning an off-the-turf maiden special weight going one mile at Laurel Park despite racing greenly.

Sent to Tampa Bay Downs for a winter campaign by trainer Arnaud Delacour, Divining Rod was third in his first try against winners to cap his 2-year-old season, and opened 2015 finishing second by a neck behind Ocean Night in the Sam F. Davis (G3) at odds of 28-1.

Divining Rod led for six furlongs before weakening to third in the Tampa Bay Derby (G2) in March, rebounding with a powerful victory over highly regarded debut winner Donworth in the Lexington.

05/08/15 –Trainer Dallas Stewart and owner Charles Fipke’s decision on Tale of Verve’s status for the 140th Preakness Stakes (G1) at Pimlico Race Course May 16 will likely rest on their analysis of last Saturday’s Kentucky Derby (G1). “I talked with the owner last night,” said Stewart, aware that the Middle Jewel of the Triple Crown is likely to attract a number of runners from the Kentucky Derby. “There were a lot of horses that ran bad races (in the Derby) and it wasn’t like they were flying home with the last quarter in :26.”
Tale of Verve, who did not draw into the Derby from the also-eligible list, galloped 1 5/8 miles Friday under exercise rider Cortez Walker.
“The longer the better for him,” Stewart said. “If he doesn’t gallop a long way, he doesn’t get a lot out of it.”
Tale of Verve broke his maiden in his most recent start at the Preakness distance of 1 3/16 miles at Keeneland on April 23 and worked five furlongs at Churchill Downs on Monday.

Trainer Todd Pletcher reported Friday morning that there have been no decisions made concerning the Preakness statuses of Materiality, Carpe Diem, Stanford and Competitive Edge. Materiality and Carpe Diem, who finished sixth and 10th, respectively, in the Derby; Stanford, who was scratched from the Derby; and Competitive Edge, the undefeated winner of the Pat Day Mile (G3) on the Derby undercard; are training at Belmont Park.
At Laurel Park, Bodhisattva galloped Friday morning for a scheduled start in the Preakness. The son of Student Council is scheduled for a breeze Sunday morning.
Bodhisattva captured the Federico Tesio Stakes by 1 ½ lengths at Pimlico on April 18.

Victor Espinoza gets results. How he gets those results, however, have the jockey under fire.

Kentucky Derby winner American Pharoah was examined by 12 state-approved veterinarians after concerns were raised over the frequency with which Espinoza whipped the horse down the stretch at Churchill Downs. Although no marks were found, the whipping bordered close enough on abuse to warrant an inquiry.

Not to mention, it might have crippled the horse’s chances at the Preakness Stakes, the second leg of the vaunted Triple Crown.

“From a tactical standpoint, Espinoza did what he thought necessary to get American Pharoah home and that is his job,” wrote Bob Ford of the Philadelphia Inquirer. But “it looks bad when a rider keeps after a horse,” Darrell Haire, regional director of the Jockey’s Guild, told reporters.

“It might not be all that good for the horse, either,” Ford notes.

Espinoza whipped American Pharoah 32 times down the stretch of its Derby win, despite one of the slowest Derby races in the last decade and a half. Beyond concerns of animal abuse, there’s the practical upshot of leaving the horse spent before the gun ever fires at Pimlico Race Track on Saturday.

Espinoza, despite (or perhaps because of) ample success on the track, has a history, too. He has been fined earlier in his career for improper use of the whip, according to Ford, and was fined $300 last Friday for breaking Stellar Wind’s skin at Santa Anita Oaks in Arcadia, Calif.
