R1 - #4 Win The Day (8-1) The last time this guy went turf to dirt he missed by a neck while rallying in last year's Tokyo City (Gr 3). Gets an extra 1/8 here today and makes third start off the summer layoff. He'll be rolling down the stretch.
R2 - #12 Silver Knott (5-1) The million dollar gelding. Got boxed in traffic and failed at Colonial so what does Godolphin do? Snip, snip. Remember, this guy lost by a nose to Victoria Road in last years BC Juvy Turf. Buick has been aboard for two of his three wins.
R3 - #9 National Treasure (8-1) I feel like somebody beats Cody's Wish today. Why not take the horse I know will be on the lead at some point? Very tepid choice - this race is tough to grasp.
R4 - #11 Lumiere Rock (12-1) Well, we can put a line through all the American horses. That narrows the field a bit. The #6 for Gosden will be mighty tough, but I can't stomach that price with so much quality in the race. Landing on a double digit filly whose last two have been a Grade 2 win and a Grade 1 third in the Prix de l'Opera.
R5 - #4 Mataraya (6-1) Baffert puts the blinkers on Eda, so you know she's going after Society for the early lead. Sets the race up perfectly for Goodnight Olive, but what if this Cox filly sits chilly and surprises them up the rail? I can visualize it...
R6 - #1 Shirl's Speight (30-1) What the hell? He placed second in last year's BC Mile at 55-1 and comes in here sporting multiple AM bullets after a nice prep at Woodbine where he angled out 8 wide and got up for 2nd in the Grade 1 Woodbine Mile behind Master Of The Seas (but that one is way out in post 14 today). Bombs away.
R7 - #3 Pretty Mischievous (8-1) This is the best race of the day in my opinion. I waffled between 3 or 4 before settling here. She is in great form and her only try at the distance was the Kentucky Oaks win back in May.
R8 - #2 Onesto (8-1) 3rd place in the Arc de Triomphe signals he's ready to win again. It's been over a year since tasting victory, but that was a Grade 1 at this distance.
R9 - #8 Ushba Tesoro (4-1) Go back and watch that Dubai World Cup race. Wow,
R10 - #3 Caravel (5-1) I have been told by a tremendous handicapper friend of mine that this race will be won by an inside post (1-4). We argued because all the horses I like are on the outside posts (10,11,12). He convinced me, though, hell he's won more bets than I've made in my lifetime. So, to me, this is the best of the inside 4.
R11 - #6 The Chosen Vron (5-1) I met Kruljac about 25 years ago trackside at Turf Paradise. He was cheering on one of his $5,000 claimers as though it was a major stakes player. I was on the horse and it got nosed at the wire. We spoke for a moment while waiting for the photo results. I remember him as such a nice guy. So, I guess I'm picking this one with my heart more than my head. My head likes #2 Dr. Schivel.
R 12 - #8 Real Fire (6-1) She's won twice on the hillside course earlier this year. That experience counts. Best Beyers of her career are in her last two starts and she's had a pair of ultra-sharp works since last.
