Interesting NFL spreads for this weekend:
— Chargers (-5.5, 45) @ Houston
— Cardinals @ Carolina (-0.5, 43.5)

Quote of the Day
“Bad news is I’m down here in Florida battling a hurricane, but the good news is I can announce my retirement………Oh cool. He just handed that (baseball) back without checking to see if our house is still here? I’d next like to announce our divorce.”
NFL reporter Sara Walsh, after her husband, a Blue Jays’ bullpen coach, gave Aaron Judge’s 61st home run ball to New York personnel, without getting anything for it

Saturday’s quiz
Chip Kelly is UCLA’s football coach; which NFL team did he used to coach?

Friday’s quiz
Todd Helton has hit the most career home runs for the Colorado Rockies.

Thursday’s quiz
Tommy Maddox was the Steelers’ starting QB before they drafted Ben Roethlisberger.

Saturday’s Den: Wrapping up a fall Friday…….

Braves 5, Mets 2— Teams are now tied atop NL East standings, with five games left. Mets hold the tie-breaker if the teams wind up even in the standings.

— Atlanta signed P Charlie Morton to a $20M deal for next year, with a team option for 2024. Morton is 9-6, 4.39 in 30 starts this season.

Tulane 27, Houston 24 OT:
Tulane’s 3rd-string QB threw the game-winning TD pass in overtime.
Houston outgained the Green Wave 383-273.
Last three years, Green Wave is 14-6 ATS coming off a loss.

Tex-San Antonio 45, Middle Tennessee 30
Roadrunners led 31-20 at halftime.
UTSA converted 10-14 on third down, Blue Raiders 6-17.
Roadrunners threw for 423 yards, averaging 11.7 yards/attempt.

Boise State 35, San Diego State 13
Aztecs led this game 13-0 at halftime.
Aztecs’ only TD came on a blocked punt.
Broncos outgained San Diego State 450-114.
Boise ran ball for 316 yards, 7/4 yards/attempt.

UCLA 40, Washington 32:
Bruins led 26-10 at halftime.
UCLA converted 10-14 third down plays.
Bruins was +2 in turnovers, ran for 184 yards, 4.7 yards/carry.

UNLV 31, New Mexico 20
Lobos led 17-0 early in second quarter.
Rebels outgained New Mexico, 356-277.
UNLV scored on pick-6 with 0:28 left; this was a close game.

— Discovered an old 2015 NFL Films thing on Amazon Prime the other night, an in-season show featuring the Arizona Cardinals. They had cameras in the coaches’ offices, in the owner’s box during games, like Hard Knocks in the summer.

Haven’t finished it yet, but what I saw was interesting. Bruce Arians was the Cardinals’ coach back then; not sure why the Cardinals let him get away, but he obviously wound up in Tampa and won a Super Bowl couple years ago.

— Cardinals’ GM Steve Keim has three sons: Carson, Brady, Warner. I’m guessing they’re going to go grow up to be quarterbacks.

Mariners 2, A’s 1— Cal Raleigh’s walk-off homer in the 9th inning puts Seattle in the playoffs for the first time since 2001.

— Houston clinched the #1-seed in the American League when the Orioles beat New York.

— SMU-Central Florida football game has been moved to Wednesday night at 7:30, because of the hurricane in Florida; game will be televised on ESPN2, the only football on TV that night.

— Iowa is the only state in our country that begins with two vowels.

Sunday’s Den: Wrapping up a sports Saturday…….

TCU 55, Oklahoma 24
Horned Frogs led 41-17 at halftime.
TCU ran ball for 361 yards, threw for 307 more.

Wake Forest 31, Florida State 21
Deacons bounced back from last week’s OT loss to Clemson.
Wake Forest converted 10-18 third down plays, 3-3 on 4th down.
Seminoles had 11 penalties for 96 yards.

Auburn lost 2 of last 3 games, scoring 12-17-17 points. Not good.

Alabama 49, Arkansas 26— Crimson Tide QB Young hurt his shoulder, didn’t play in the second half. Backup QB Milroe ran for 92 yards, but completed only 4-9 passes.

UConn 19, Fresno State 14
Jim Mora Jr gets his first big moment with the Huskies.
Fresno State is now 0-3 vs I-A teams; this is a bad loss.

Braves 4, Mets 2— Atlanta leads NL East by a game, with four games left to play; if teams end up tied, Mets win the division. Kyle Wright won his 21st game for the Braves.

Marlins 4, Brewers 3— Miami scored twice in 9th inning to put Milwaukee a game behind the Phillies, who also own the tiebreaker. Maybe the Brewers shouldn’t have traded Josh Hader.

Steelers @ Buffalo (-14)

Quote of the Day
“The plays are there and we’re there, we’ve just got to execute and coach them better. That system’s the same system a lot of people use and what’s going on. I’m not … the plays are there. We’re in the red zone, ready to score and hit it, we just got to pick it up and go. We’re not executing. We’ve got to coach them better, make sure they’re in that position and do it. Can’t press harder, you’ve got to go easier.”
Texas A&M football coach Jimbo Fisher

Monday’s quiz
How many playoff games did Tony Romo win as a starting QB in the NFL?

Sunday’s quiz
Archie Manning is Peyton/Eli’s father; he played 15 years in the NFL, 11 years for the Saints.

Saturday’s quiz
Chip Kelly is UCLA’s football coach; he used to coach the Philadelphia Eagles.
