Thursday’s 6-pack:
Interesting NFL spreads this week:
— Browns @ Bengals (-2.5)
— Raiders (-3) @ Giants
— Falcons @ Saints (-6)
— Chargers (-1.5) @ Eagles
— Cardinals (-1) @ 49ers
— Bears @ Steelers (-6.5)

Quote of the Day
“If you don’t recruit, there’s no coach out there that can out-coach recruiting. The best coach to ever play the game better be a good recruiter, because no coaching is going to out-coach players.”
Georgia football coach Kirby Smart

Thursday’s quiz
Who has the most assists in NBA history?

Wednesday’s quiz
Hank Stram won a Super Bowl with the Chiefs; he later coached the New Orleans Saints after he left Kansas City.

Tuesday’s quiz
Hank Stram, Andy Reid are the two coaches won a Super Bowl coaching the Chiefs.

*********************************

Thursday’s Den: Doing some thinking out loud……..

13) Aaron Rodgers tested positive for COVID, is out for this week’s game with the Chiefs. Rodgers didn’t get vaccinated; he took some alternative kind of medicine this summer, but the NFL didn’t accept that medicine as good enough, so he is considered unvaccinated.

Game was pick ‘em Tuesday; now Chiefs are an 8-point favorite, as 2nd-year QB Jordan Love will make his first NFL start for Green Bay.

Since 2008, Packers are 6-11-1 ATS when Rodgers hasn’t been their quarterback.

12) Oklahoma State’s basketball team was originally declared ineligible for the 2020 postseason; they appealed the ban for two years, which allowed them to play in the NCAA’s for the brief Cade Cunningham era- the NCAA denied their appeal, so OSU is out of NCAA’s for this season.

11) 8-0 Wake Forest is the first team since 1993 to be 8-0 or better, and be an underdog to a team that doesn’t have a winning record. Demon Deacons are +2.5 this week at 4-4 North Carolina.

In 1993, 9-0 Auburn (+1.5) won 42-28 at 4-5 Georgia.

10) MAC-tion started this week; five weeknight football games that give the MAC needed TV exposure on Tuesday/Wednesday, with almost no competition on TV, except for some NBA/NHL stuff.

Eastern Michigan 52, Toledo 49:
— Eagles win as a 9-point underdog.
— Toledo gained 672 yards, ran kick back for a TD and still lost.
— Rockets turned ball over three times (minus-2)

Ball State 31, Akron 25:
— Cardinals ran for 240 yards, but almost blew a 28-10 lead.
— 2-7 Akron starts five freshmen on the offensive line; unusual.

Ohio U 35, Miami 33:
— Bobcats won as a 7-point underdog- they led 28-0 early in 3rd quarter.
— Miami outgained Ohio 569-413.
— This was Ohio’s 4th game decided by 3 or fewer points.

Kent State 52, Northern Illinois 47:
— Lombardi threw for 532 yards, and his team lost.
— Cooper ran for 173 yards and two TD’s for Kent.
— Total yardage: Kent 682, NIU 663

Central Michigan 42, Western Michigan 30:
— Chippewas scored three TD’s in last 5:03 of first half.
— Central Michigan was +3 in turnovers.
— Western Michigan was 9-18 on 3rd down, CMU 3-11.

9) Houston Texans are a terrible football team; they’ve lost seven games in a row, they’re really bad, but they had hope to get better, if they traded QB Deshaun Watson for a bunch of draft picks. If you nail your draft picks, your team can improve very quickly.

The trade deadline was Tuesday; Watson is still in Houston, in limbo and the Texans are still horrendous, and without a decent QB.

Other teams are queasy about giving up a boatload of draft picks to acquire a QB who may or may not wind up in prison; there are 22 lawsuits against Watson, who is making $39M a year while he shows up at practice, but never plays in games.

Earlier Houston can trade Watson now is next March 16.

8) Jorge Soler was traded from the Royals to Atlanta on July 30, for a Class A pitcher.
— Soler hit .192 in 94 games for the Royals TY; he hit .228 last year.
— Soler hit .269 in 55 games for Atlanta, and then wins the World Series MVP.

Go figure.

7) Detroit Tigers acquired C Tucker Barnhart from Cincinnati, for IF prospect Nick Quintana. Barnhart is a good defensive catcher who had a .693 OPS the last three seasons, playing home games at hitter-friendly Great American Ballpark.

6) Nikola Jokic has played 213:00 this season; Denver Nuggets are +80 in those 213:00.

In 123:00 where Jokic was sitting out, Nuggets are minus-62.

That would make Jokic the early leader for MVP, yes?

5) December 19-22 at Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas is the G-League Winter Showcase, with 30+ games played on two courts over four days. Lot of very good basketball played by guys who are busting their butts to make the NBA. Excellent entertainment.

4) Clay Helton started this season as USC’s football coach; he got fired after USC’s second game, because parts of college football are insane. Now Helton already has another job, head coach at Georgia Southern. Interesting turn of events.

Someone on Twitter this week described Helton as “…..the nicest man in college football” We’ll assume that is true and wish Helton well with the Eagles.

3) Bryan Snitker never played big league baseball, he got his first MLB managing job at age 60; pretty cool to see him win a World Series this week. Unusual that his son is a coach for Houston, unusual that the Braves were 55-58 at one point this season, but rallied to win the World Series.

2) NFL notes:
— Over their four games, Cleveland Browns were outscored 74-36 in second half.
— Over their four games, Miami was outscored 29-0 in last 2:00 of each half.

1) Good idea for a new baseball rule: once you take your starting pitcher out, the DH for that team also goes away. Would encourage teams to keep their starting pitcher in game longer.

Friday’s 6-pack:
Teams that lead the country in 3-point shooting LY:
41.3%— Baylor
40.9%— South Dakota State
40.3%— Colgate
40.0%— Fort Wayne
39.5%— Cal Baptist
39.4%— Texas State

Quote of the Day
“Not to make an excuse or anything about the ball but I said that it’s just a different basketball. It don’t have the same touch and softness that the Spalding ball had. You’ll see this year. It’s going to be a lot of bad misses. You’ll see a lot of bad misses.”
Clippers star Paul George, on the NBA’s new Wilson basketball

Friday’s quiz
Phil Robertson, the father on Duck Dynasty, used to play QB at Louisiana Tech. Which NFL Hall of Famer followed Robertson as Tech’s quarterback?

Thursday’s quiz
John Stockton (15,806) has the most assists in NBA history.

Wednesday’s quiz
Hank Stram won a Super Bowl with the Chiefs; he later coached the New Orleans Saints after he left Kansas City.

*************************************

Friday’s Den: Random stuff with the weekend here…….

13) Indianapolis 45, NJ Jets 30:
— Colts in first half: 4 drives- 35 plays, 285 yards, 28 points.
— Last six weeks, Colts outscored opponents 85-45 in first half.
— Colts have 19 takeaways in last eight games (+10)
— Colts covered six of their last eight games.
— Five of their last six games went over the total.

— Colts ran ball for 260 yards, threw it for 272 yards.
— 3rd string QB Johnson replaced injured White, went 27-41/317 passing.
— Jets gave up 54-31-45 points in last three games.
— Jets have been outscored 51-14 in first quarter, 151-44 in first half.
— Last two years, Jets 2-10 ATS as road underdogs, 0-4 TY.

12) When Jordan Love starts for the Packers Sunday, he’ll be the 9th QB to start for Green Bay since 1992, which is three less than any other NFL team (Giants 12) during that time.

11) Alabama is a 28-point favorite over LSU Saturday; they were -29.5 over the Bayou Bengals last year, which helps explain why Ed Orgeron got the boot this fall. LSU’s program has gone in the ashcan since Joe Burrow left town.

From 2007-16, 10 of 11 Alabama-LSU games had a single digit spread, that’s how good LSU was. 2007 was last time LSU was favored over the Crimson Tide.

10) Nick Castellanos was slated to earn $34M over the next two years in Cincinnati, but the slugging outfielder opted out of his deal. We’ll see how much more money he gets somewhere else. Castellanos hit .309 this year, with 34 homers, 100 RBI, and he missed 24 games.

9) Louisiana 21, Georgia State 17:
— Ragin’ Cajuns win their 8th game in a row.
— Georgia State led 10-0 with 3:00 left in third quarter.
— ULL outgained Panthers 430-307, averaged 8.4 yards/play.

8) From 2011-13, Houston Astros went 162-324, winning 56-55-51 games in consecutive years, not good. They were terrible, like the Orioles/Diamondbacks are now.

But when you nail your draft picks and your owner will spend some cash, things will get better. Astros are obviously way better now, making playoffs the last five years, playing in three of last five World Series. Houston is the 4th biggest city in the country; they draw well, and the Astros figure to be really good for the forseeable future.

7) Buster Posey retired this week, after a 12-year career which included three World Series titles. Posey hit .302 for his career, with an .832 OPS. Heck of a career.

6) Lebron James is out for a week or so with an abdomen injury.

5) QB’s/wide receivers need to get statistical credit for yards gained on pass interference calls. Make it a separate category, but it should be counted.

4) College basketball has gotten weird the last few years; the head coach at Cal-Riverside quits to become an assistant at Arkansas (he’s an assistant at Oklahoma now), the head coach at UTEP quits to become an assistant at Texas.

Money must be better as an assistant, but you’d think being a head coach is a big deal. Those two guys were doing well enough as head coaches that they could’ve gotten bigger jobs eventually.

3) Jamie Ahale is a 6-5 senior at Illinois-Chicago; last year, he was 46-135 behind the arc (34.1%). He took one 2-point shot the whole season, in 677 minutes. 11 foul shots, one 2-point shot, and 135 three-point shots. Very unusual.

2) Last year, Robert Morris jumped from the NEC to the Horizon League; bigger jump than they realized. Pretty big gap in size/talent; RMC purged its roster, has only three players back from last year- they added lot of transfers, to become more competitive.

They have two players who are playing for their fourth college. This is their last year of college ball, so they can’t transfer anymore, but chemistry could be an issue.

1) Five NFL games this week are rematches of a Super Bowl, the most in any one week in NFL history. Wonder if the schedule makers did that on purpose.

Saturday’s 6-pack:
Six leading scorers in the NBA this season:
28.9— Paul George, LAC
28.3— Kevin Durant, Bkln
27.4— Giannis Antetokounmpo, Milw
27.0— DeMar DeRozan, Chi
27.0— Ja Morant, Mem
26.7— Steph Curry, GState

Quote of the Day
“After careful consideration, internal discussions and considerations with Odell (Beckham) and his representation, we’ve determined that it is in the best interest of all parties involved that Odell no longer play for the Cleveland Browns.”
Cleveland Browns’ Twitter account

Saturday’s quiz
Which two starting QBs in NFL played college football at Cal?

Friday’s quiz
Phil Robertson, the father on Duck Dynasty, used to play QB at Louisiana Tech; Terry Bradshaw followed Robertson as Tech’s quarterback.

Thursday’s quiz
John Stockton (15,806) has the most assists in NBA history.

****************************

Saturday’s Den: Random stuff on a fall Saturday…….and NHL trends

13) Eight college football coaches have already been fired this season; when a coach gets fired, the school that fires him eats money, sometimes a lot of money.

Since 2010, these schools have eaten the most $$$ after firing coaches:
$31.2M— Auburn
$25.8M— Nebraska
$21.5M— Texas

12) College basketball starts Tuesday; here are couple of early spreads for the twin bill at Madison Square Garden:
— Kansas (-5) vs Michigan State
— Duke (-1.5) vs Kentucky

11) Utah 52, Stanford 7:
— Utah led this game 38-0 at halftime. Not the best entertainment.
— Utes had 440 total yards……at halftime.

10) Nets 96, Pistons 90— Cade Cunningham was the first pick in last summer’s NBA Draft; he is off to a rough start, shooting 13-51 from the floor (25.5%) in his first four pro games. It is only four games; he also has 23 rebounds, 11 assists, but 25.5% is a red flag, for sure.

Maybe it points out the widening gap between the skill level in college ball and the NBA. Guys leave college for the NBA too soon; they keep developing in the NBA, as they keep maturing into adults. NBA teams have lot more assistant coaches than they used to; some of them are just skill development guys, not game-prep guys.

9) Warriors 126, Pelicans 85— I need to hear an explanation why New Orleans fired Stan Van Gundy, after only one season in the Big Easy. Pelicans are 1-10 and sinking fast.

8) QB Jason Brown is starting for South Carolina against Florida this week; he is a transfer from I-AA St Francis PA. Brown will be the third different starting quarterback for the Gamecocks this season; I’m guessing South Carolina will add one or two transfer QB’s this winter.

7) Saw two big-time NBA scorers, Shai Gilgeous-Alexander and Luka Doncic, make shots this week, both with a foot in the center court jump circle. Never thought I’d see the day when guys take jumpshots from just inside half court, but here we are. If guys can make 37.5% of them, or 3 out of every 8 shots, then they’re good shots.

6) Sacramento State basketball coach Brian Katz is retiring after 14 years due to medical reasons; Katz is the winningest coach in Sac State’s Division I history (since 1991) with 150 wins. He was named national mid-major and co-Big Sky coach of the year and led the Hornets to their first postseason game in 53 years at the 2015 CollegeInsider Tournament.

5) Cleveland Browns released WR Odell Beckham; he goes on waivers Monday, can be claimed beginnng 4:00 Tuesday. Myself, I wouldn’t touch the guy with a 10-foot pole; Cleveland will be better off without him. Its an addition-by-subtraction thing.

3) When Louisiana beat Georgia State Thursday night, they clinched the Sun Belt West, and their 4th consecutive berth in the Sun Belt championship game.

2) Baseball stuff:
— Cubs picked up P Wade Miley off waivers from Cincinnati Friday; Miley will be 35 next week; he was 12-7, 3.37 in 28 starts for Cincinnati this year. He had a 2.80 ERA in first half of the year, 4.19 in the second half.
— Cleveland Guardians (Guardians, not Indians) picked ip the $12M option on Jose Ramirez for next season.
— Charlie Blackmon accepted the $21M player option from Colorado for next year.

1) How does Iowa have a mobile sports betting app, but New York doesn’t? Our politicians need to get this done next year. Seriously, it is costing the state a lot of money.

New York Times ran a great story few weeks ago about a guy who for the last year, has been biking from his home in Washington Heights in Manhattan, over the George Washington Bridge and makes modest bets (most of them in the $2-$15 range), then cycles home to watch the games on TV/Interweb. Guy is risking his life to place bets. People like to bet; would be nice if for once, the politicians gave people something they like.

Sunday’s 6-pack:
— White Sox picked up 2022 option for Craig Kimbrel ($16M)
— Miami 118, Utah 115— Heat was +20 in 20:00 with Morris on floor.
— Denver 95, Rockets 94— Teams shot combined 17-68 on arc. Brickfest.
— Philly 114, Chicago 105— Ben Simmons forfeits another $360,000.
— Dallas 107, Boston 104— Dallas was up 17 at half, they hold on for the win.
— James Madison is bolting the CAA for Sun Belt Conference.

Quote of the Day
“Announce this. There’s an open tryout on our campus for kickers. Anybody that wants to kick or walk on and kick at Mississippi State, we’ll hold a tryout any time you can get over there to our building, providing you’re cleared by the NCAA.”
Mississippi State coach Mike Leach

Sunday’s quiz
Of the 32 starting QB’s in the NFL, how many played college ball in the SEC?

Saturday’s quiz
Aaron Rodgers, Jared Goff played their college football at Cal.

Friday’s quiz
Phil Robertson, the father on Duck Dynasty, used to play QB at Louisiana Tech; Terry Bradshaw followed Robertson as Tech’s quarterback.

********************************

Sunday’s Den: Wrapping up a college football Saturday

13) North Carolina 58, Wake Forest 55:

— Demon Deacons led this game 45-27 in third quarter.
— 9-1 Wake gave up 114 points in last two games.
— Total yardage: Wake 615, UNC 546
— Both teams had 110+ yards in penalties. Not a great day for the refs.

12) Army 21, Air Force 14 OT:
— Since 2005, games between the service academies have gone under the total 40 of 50 times, with one push (40-9-1 under).
— Army actually threw a 79-yard TD pass.
— Air Force tied game with FG with 0:23 left.

11) Arkansas 31, Mississippi State 28:
— Miss State missed 39-yard FG at 0:00 that would’ve forced OT.
— Miss State QB Rogers threw for 417 yards in losing cause.
— This is Mike Leach, after the game:
“Announce this. There’s an open tryout on our campus for kickers. Anybody that wants to kick or walk on and kick at Mississippi State, we’ll hold a tryout any time you can get over there to our building, providing you’re cleared by the NCAA.”

Alrighty then.

10) Clemson 30, Louisville 24
— Tigers outscored Louisville 13-0 in 4th quarter to escape with a win.
— Louisville three TD’s were on plays of 26-23-51 yards.
— Cardinals ran ball for 223 yards, outgained Clemson 397-340.

9) Oregon 26, Washington 16— 1:58 to go, Washington had ball on their own 10-yard line, 4th-and-10, down 24-16. They don’t go for it, they line up to punt- the fans boo, the center snaps the ball over the punter’s head. Safety for Oregon, game over. No bueno.

Washington had only two timeouts left; this coach is incompetent in game management. Huskies are now 4-5; they’ve been a program that has won a lot. Not anymore.

8) Purdue 40, Michigan State 29:
— Boiler QB O’Connell threw for 536 yards. Lot of yards.
— Purdue converted 11-18 third down plays.
— Boilers outgained Michigan State, 594-458.
— Both sides averaged 9+ yards/pass attempt.

7) Upsets of the Week:
— South Carolina (+20.5) 40, Florida 17
— Illinois (+15) 14, Minnesota 6
— Colorado (+12) 37, Oregon State 34, OT
— Eastern Michigan (+9) 52, Toledo 49
— Central Michigan (+9) 42, Western Michigan 30
— TCU (+7.5) 30, Baylor 28

6) Cincinnati 28, Tulsa 20— Bearcats keep winning, but they’re 0-3 ATS in last three games, and apparently that matters to the geniuses who vote in the top 25 poll. Alabama struggled with LSU this week; will people vote them lower because of that? Didn’t think so.

5) TCU 30, Baylor 28:
— QB Morris threw for 461 yards, 2 TD’s in his first start for TCU.
— Morris is yet another former Oklahoma QB; his dad coached SMU, Arkansas.
— Horned Frogs outgained Baylor, 562-393.

4) Illinois 14, Minnesota 6:
— Golden Gophers are 6-3; in two of those losses, they were favored by 31, 15 points, so it is really a disappointing 6-3 record.

3) Memphis 28, SMU 25:
— Mustangs lose second straight game, after a 7-0 start.
— Memphis outgained SMU, 454-323; they were +2 in turnovers.

2) Miami 33, Georgia Tech 30:
— 5-4 Miami won its last three games, by total of 8 points.
— Miami outscored Tech 16-7 in second half.

1) Iowa State 30, Texas 7:
— Texas is 4-5, has lost four games in a row, giving up 37 ppg.
— Last year, Longhorns fired Tom Herman, who was 32-18 at Texas, 4-0 in bowl games.
— Boosters were mad at him; he didn’t win a national title.
— Maybe they should’ve kept Herman.
