Thursday’s 6-pack:

NFL teams with best turnover ratio:
+12- Indianapolis
+10- New England
+9- Buffalo, Green Bay
+8- Arizona, Tampa Bay
+5- Minnesota, NJ Giants
+4- Dallas, New Orleans

Quote of the Day
“)Notre Dame) Players, largely fed up with the distant, CEO-type approach of Kelly, made it abundantly clear throughout the day to Swarbrick and to anyone else who would listen that they wanted 35-year-old defensive coordinator Marcus Freeman to become their next head coach,”
from The Athletic

Thursday’s quiz
Which actress played Anfernee Hardaway’s mother in the basketball movie Blue Chips?

Wednesday’s quiz
Brett Favre played his college football at Southern Mississippi.

Tuesday’s quiz
Arizona Cardinals are the only NFL team hasn’t tried a 2-point conversion this year.

*******************

Thursday’s Den: Doing some thinking out loud

13) NC State 104, Nebraska 100, 4OT:
— Four players were ejected in a fracas.
— Nebraska led by 14 with 9:31 left in regulation
— Only the fifth 4-OT game in the history of ACC basketball.

— Free throws: NC State 32-42, Nebraska 11-15
— NC State’s Seabron played 57:00— he scored 37 points, 12 rebounds, was 17-20 on foul line. He took more foul shots than the whole Nebraska team.

12) Been watching a ton of college basketball; I’m wondering if home court advantage is going to be bigger than usual this season, since there were no fans last season— playing in front of hostile crowds isn’t that easy, and fans might actually might little more zealous this season, after having to stay home last winter.

Something to watch as we move thru pre-conference play.

11) Cincinnati 59, Miami OH 58:
— Bearcats had the onions to play a pre-conference road game, and barely survive it.
— Miami led by 8 with 12:37 left.
— Cincinnati was 2-10 from foul line.

10) Next time someone says Mike Krzyzewski is the best college basketball coach ever, remind them that Duke hasn’t won an ACC regular season title since 2006. He is a great coach for sure, but when John Wooden was coaching UCLA, there was no conference tournament- he had to win the Pac-12 regular season title, just to get into the NCAA tournament, and he won seven national championships in a row, ten in all.

9) Duke alum Marcus Stroman announced on Twitter that he’ll be pitching for the Cubs next year; Stroman is 61-60, 3.73 in 173 career starts. He threw 179 innings LY (10-13, 4.35), after opting out of the 2020 season. He got $71M from the Cubs on a 3-year deal.

8) Taysom Hill will start at QB for New Orleans Thursday night against the Cowboys. Hill is this generation’s Tim Tebow; more of a runner than a passer. He went 3-1 starting at QB for the Saints last year, his only NFL starts at quarterback.

7) Notre Dame hired defensive coordinator Marcus Freeman as their new coach; he was the defensive coordinator at Cincinnati from 2017-20, has never been a head coach.

Interesting that Kelly will have to hire two coordinators at LSU, since Freeman/Tommy Rees both elected to stay at Notre Dame.

6) Georgia 82, Memphis 79:
— Memphis led by 5 with 4:19 left.
— This is a bad loss for Memphis; Georgia had lost four games in a row.
— Tom Crean wins his 400th game as a head coach.

5) North Carolina 72, Michigan 51— Wolverines looked terrible; UNC outscored them 43-24 in second half.

4) Washington State 51, Arizona State 29— This is a final score; ASU is now 2-6- they’ve lost five games in a row. Sun Devils shot 21.1% from floor in this game.

3) About 10 or so years ago, I was sitting at an AAU basketball tournament at Siena College; guy sitting next to me was a great coach at the Division II level, and I knew him to say hello to, so I picked his brain a little bit, asked him what he looked for while evaluating talent.

“What is his college skill?” was his reply. He told me that he considered getting loose balls a skill, just like passing or shooting or defense. Learned a lot that day, and I appreciate it.

2) I’m watching The Bodyguard on TV late Tuesday night; excellent movie, but it was on a commercial station, and there were A LOT of commericials during the movie, so I had to look it up. Movie is 2:09, the time slot it was in was four freakin’ hours!!!!

— Movie is 2 hours, 9 minutes
— With 1 hour, 51 minutes of commercials.

Yikes.

1) I’m concerned that the geniuses who run baseball are killing the golden goose; Texas is going to pay their 2B/SS a combined $57M a year for the next seven years, so you can’t tell me they’re not making money, but now a lockout is underway, and who knows when it will end.

Players are making a fortune, owners wouldn’t be in it if it wasn’t profitable, but some of the owners don’t try to win- they throw scrub teams out on the field and expect fans to still some to the ballpark and pay lot of money to watch cruddy teams play.

Get in a room and find a middle ground, before it is too late.

Friday’s 6-pack:

NFL teams with worst turnover ratio:
minus-15- NJ Jets
minus-13- Jacksonville
minus-7- Atlanta, Baltimore, Kansas City, Tennessee
minus-6- Carolina
minus-4- Chicago, Pittsburgh, San Francisco, Washington
minus-1- Cincinnati, Detroit, Miami, Philadelphia

Quote of the Day
“Hardest part was being completely powerless once game begins. You’re so used to making decisions every 40 seconds. And you learn the team doesn’t need you!!”
Browns’ coach Kevin Stefanski, who missed a game because of COVID

Friday’s quiz
Hakeem Olajuwon was 1st pick in the 1984 NBA Draft; Michael Jordan was the 3rd pick. Who was the second pick?

Thursday’s quiz
Alfre Woodard played Anfernee Hardaway’s mother in the basketball movie Blue Chips.

Wednesday’s quiz
Brett Favre played his college football at Southern Mississippi.

****************************

Friday’s Den: Random stuff with weekend here…….

13) Dallas 27, New Orleans 17:
— Pollard had a 58-yard TD run late in third quarter.
— Watkins salted game away on a pick-6 with 2:52 left.
— Dallas won despite converting only 2-13 on third down.
— Cowboys have outscored foes 69-9 in last 2:00 of each half.
— Five of last six Dallas games stayed under the total.

— Saints lost last five games, giving up 29.6 ppg.
— Hill threw three INTs in 11-pass span in 4th quarter.
— New Orleans has 39 plays of 20+ yards, their opponents have 55.
— Last four weeks, New Orleans was outscored 73-20 in first half.

12) This week, a published report accused major league baseball of secretly using two different baseballs during the 2021 season.

In a statement, MLB acknowledged that it had used two different baseballs, blamed differences on production difficulties caused by the pandemic.

Between gambling and fantasy baseball, there is a boatload of money involved in major league games, aside from the actual business of MLB; that kind of information would be helpful in handicapping/fantasy, no?

11) Now that baseball is in a lockout, what does MLB Network show every day? Winter meetings were always lot of fun and educational, but there won’t be any this year. Too bad, unless they get their butts back to negotiating.

10) Saint Mary’s 60, Utah State 58:
— Gaels were down 7 with 10:13 left.
— Utah State outscored Gaels 15-5 on foul line.
— Gaels shot 57% inside arc; this is a quality road win.

9) Liberty 66, Missouri 45— No offense to Liberty, but SEC teams aren’t supposed to lose to Atlantic Sun teams by 20 points- this game was 35-14 at halftime. Liberty is 4-3; this is their first win over a team in the top 300.

8) Memphis 152, Oklahoma City 79— This is the biggest margin of victory in NBA history, a record that had stood since 1991. Nine of 12 Memphis players scored in double figures but Ja Morant, their best player, didn’t even play.

7) Last time a Big 14 team won the national title in college basketball?

Try 2000, when Michigan State won out in Indianapolis. 22 years is a long time for a league not to win a national title.

6) ESPN was supposed to air the Laker-Clipper game Friday night, but they dumped it in favor of the Phoenix-Golden State game, the two best basketball teams on earth.

5) Other night, I stumbled across highlights of Kurt Warner playing in an Arena Bowl, for the Iowa Barnstormers against Tampa Bay. Tampa Bay’s QB that night; former Washington coach Jay Gruden.

4) More college football coaching stuff:
— Colorado State fired Steve Addazio after only two years.
— Bronco Mendenhall resigned at Virginia, after 11 years.

3) Tampa Bay WR Antonio Brown gets suspended for three games for lying about his COVID vaccine status, and getting a fake vaccination card- the suspension will cost him $547,059.

Would’ve been a lot easier/cheaper to just get the shot, no?

2) Temple’s best basketball player, Khalif Battle, hurt his foot, is out for the year; terrible news for the 4-3 Owls, who won their last three games.

1) I want to puke when a baseball player signs for huge money and then says “It isn’t about the money, I just want to win.”

Max Scherzer said that; he just signed for $43M a year with the freakin’ Mets., not exactly the gold standard of major league franchises. Scherzer left the Dodgers, who make the playoffs every year, but they weren’t offering $43M a year.

Go figure.

Sunday’s 6-pack:

College football leaders in passing yardage:
5,545— Bailey Zappe, Western Kentucky
4,449— Will Rogers, Mississippi State
4,444— Brennan Armstrong, Virginia
4,186— Carson Strong, Nevada
4,066— Kenny Pickett, Pitt
3,901— Bryce Young, Alabama

Quote of the Day
“……I think we had a tremendous amount of respect for Georgia, their team and what they accomplished. But you guys gave us a lot of really positive rat poison. The rat poison that you usually give us is usually fatal, but the rat poison that you put out there this week was yummy.’’
Nick Saban, talking about Alabama being an underdog Saturday

Sunday’s quiz
Chargers drafted QB Justin Herbert with 6th pick in the 2020 NFL Draft; which two QB’s were taken ahead of him?

Saturday’s quiz
Maryland won national title in basketball 20 years ago; Gary Williams was their coach.

Friday’s quiz
Hakeem Olajuwon was 1st pick in the 1984 NBA Draft; Michael Jordan was the 3rd pick. Sam Bowie was the second pick, by Portland

Sunday’s Den: Wrapping up a sports Saturday

13) Cincinnati 35, Houston 20:
— Bearcats finish 12-0; they damn well better make the college football playoff.
— Cincinnati scored 35 points, despite going 0-8 on third down.
— Bearcats outscored Houston 21-0 in third quarter.

12) Alabama 41, Georgia 24:
— Alabama was an underdog for first time in 93 games.
— Crimson Tide beat Georgia last year, too, also by 41-24 score.
— Alabama averaged 9.6 yards/pass attempt (421 passing yards)

11) Alabama 91, Gonzaga 82:
— Big day for the Crimson Tide athletic department.
— Gonzaga lost two of last three games; their schedule eases up now.
— Zags were only 13-25 on foul line.

10) Michigan 42, Iowa 3:
— Jim Harbaugh banks $1.7M in bonuses by winning this game.
— The thing is, Harbaugh has already said he’ll give that money back to the school, to give to university employees who took a pay cut after the pandemic last year.
— This is Michigan’s first league championship since 2004.
— Michigan scored a TD with 1:25 left; I’m guessing that’ll be remembered.

9) Baylor 21, Oklahoma State 16:
— OSU had seven plays inside 2-yard line on two series, scored only 3 points.
— Cowboys’ last play ended just inside the Baylor 1-yard line.
— Baylor QB Shapen completed his first 17 passes.
— Baylor is 11-2 this year; they were 2-7 last year.

8) Texas-San Antonio 49, Western Kentucky 41:
— Roadrunners beat WKU twice this year, 52-46/49-41
— In between, Hilltoppers won seven straight games.
— WKU QB Zappe threw for 577 yards, four TDs in losing cause.

7) Louisiana 24, Appalachian State 16:
— Ragin’ Cajuns beat WKU twice this year, 41-13/24-16
— In between, App State won six straight games.
— App State completed only 12 of 30 passes.

6) Colorado State 74, Saint Mary’s 58:
— Second top 100 win for 9-0 Rams.
— Rams made 9-16 on arc; they never trailed.
— Saint Mary’s is still 8-2, with three top 100 wins.

5) Ole Miss 67, Memphis 63:
— Memphis lost its last three games, after 5-0 start.
— Tigers are turning ball over 25.5% of time (#351)
— Ole Miss was 8-26 on arc, 10-25 inside arc.

4) Loyola 68, DePaul 64:
— These Chicago rivals met for first time since in nine years.
— Loyola is far and away best team in the MVC.
— DePaul is 6-1, but against schedule #323.

3) USC 63, Washington State 61:
— Trojans shot 59.5% inside arc.
— Wazzu led 52-47 with 7:07 left in game.
— Both these teams will be in the NCAA tournament.

2) Three college basketball teams lost Saturday, after leading by 16+ points:
— UMass 87, Harvard 77
— Marshall 72, Duquesne 71
— VCU 65, Campbell 61

1) If the college football top 4 isn’t:
Alabama, Cincinnati, Georgia, Michigan in some order, then the system is corrupt.
