Tuesday’s 6-pack:

Conference championship games this weekend:
Big X— Oklahoma State (-5) vs Baylor
Pac-12— Utah (-3) vs Oregon
AAC— Cincinnati (-10.5) vs Houston
SEC— Georgia (-6.5) vs Alabama
ACC— Pittsburgh (-3) vs Wake Forest
Big 14— Michigan (-10.5) vs Iowa

Quote of the Day
“When we met with the team today, I communicated to our players that our program is about them. It will always be bigger than any one person. And just as it’s always been, Oklahoma football is positioned for greatness.”
Oklahoma AD Joe Castiglione

Tuesday’s quiz
Only one NFL team hasn’t tried a 2-point conversion this year; which one?

Monday’s quiz
In the classic movie All the President’s Men, Robert Redford, Dustin Hoffman played writers Woodward and Bernstein.

Sunday’s quiz
Green Bay beat the Chiefs 35-10 in the first Super Bowl.

*******************************

Tuesday’s Den: Nobody asked me, but……..

13) Washington 17, Seattle 15:
— Seahawks scored TD with 0:15 left, but 2-point play failed.
— DK Metcalf caught only one pass for 13 yards.
— Seattle is 3-1 if it scores 28+ points, 0-7 if it doesn’t.
— Six of Seahawks’ last seven games stayed under the total.

— Washington is 3-0 since its bye, scoring 24.3 ppg.
— Washington is 8-4-1 in last 13 games with spread of 3 or less.
— Washington is 13-7 ATS last 20 games coming off a win.
— Five of last six Washington games stayed under the total.

12) Max Scherzer signed a 3-year, $130M deal with the Mets Monday, as billionaire owner Steve Cohen opens his wallet to improve his ballclub. Mets have spent $258M or so on free agents in the last four days.

11) Texas Rangers are also spending a lot of money; they gave 2B Marcus Semien $175M Sunday, then gave SS Corey Seager a 10-year, $325M deal Monday.

Part of reason playing in Texas appeals to free agents is the tax status there; Rangers play 81 home games, nine in Houston, nine in Seattle and three in Tampa, all states with zero tax status for athletes. That’s 102 games, nearly two-thirds with zero tax status. It matters.

10) If I’m a free agent pitcher, I’d want to know if the universal DH is going to be a thing, before I picked my next employer. Hopefully the universal DH will become official this winter.

Seattle Mariners signed P Robbie Ray to a 5-year, $115M deal Monday.

9) Oklahoma Sooners had a rough few days:
— Football coach Lincoln Riley jumped to USC
— Backup QB Spencer Rattler entered the transfer portal
— A hotshot high school QB who committed to Oklahoma de-commited. Wonder where he is going to wind up (USC?)

8) Minnesota 100, Indiana 98– Domantas Sabonis had 16 points, 25 rebounds, 10 assists for the Pacers; he is the first NBA player with 25 rebounds and 10 assists in a game since Maurice Lucas in 1980.

7) When Michigan plays Iowa this weekend in the Big 14 title game, it’ll be the first time the Wolverines have played in the championship game. Was surprised when I heard that. Hell, Northwestern’s even played in two of them.

Big 14 started playing a league championship game in 2011.

6) Random stat: over the last three football seasons, Big 14 teams are 17-4 ATS when playing teams from the MAC. There were no meetings in 2020 because of COVID, so that is 17-4 over two seasons.

5) Drew Brees is keeping busy since he retired from the NFL; he works for NBC, has an endorsement deal with Lowe’s, has stock in an online betting company, and now has a deal where he reads Bible verses on pray.com

Interesting contrast; not lot of people get paid for reading the Bible while also endorsing sports betting.

4) One of the funnier parts of NFL games is when an official throws a flag for pass interference, then one or two other refs throw a flag too, selling the call to make it look like an obvious foul.

3) Dallas Cowboys coach Mike McCarthy tested positive for COVID, will miss Thursday night’s game in New Orleans.

2) Florida Gators hired U of Louisiana coach Billy Napier to be its next football coach; Napier is 39-12 coaching the Ragin’ Cajuns- he will coach them in the Sun Belt title game this week, then is off to Gainesville.

1) LSU hired football coach Brian Kelly away from Notre Dame; Kelly was 113-40 in South Bend— he won more games there than Knute Rockne. Notre Dame made the national playoff two of last three years- they’re 11-1 this year, ranked 6th in country.

BROOKLYN is 28-14 ATS (12.6 Units) in home games versus good 3 point shooting teams - making >=36% of their attempts in the last 3 seasons.

SACRAMENTO is 13-27 ATS (-16.7 Units) in home games after a game where they failed to cover the spread in the last 3 seasons.

GOLDEN STATE is 9-0 ATS (9 Units) after allowing 105 points or less 2 straight games in the current season.

DETROIT is 10-1 ATS (8.9 Units) after 4 or more consecutive losses over the last 2 seasons.

Wednesday’s 6-pack:

Some of the leading 3-point shooting teams in college ball:
2) Colorado State (Lipscomb is 1st)
3) Purdue
4) Davidson
5) Jacksonville State
6) South Dakota State
7) Loyola-Chicago

Quote of the Day
“I don’t know what there is to address. Like I said, for a guy that keeps his head down and very rarely ever answers his phone or does anything like that, I don’t talk to a whole lot of people. So there is nothing. That’s the crazy thing. It’s all whatever is being said out there and different things. So there is no speculation. Is the (Notre Dame) job open? I guess it is. But I wouldn’t know if somebody didn’t tell me.”
Cincinnati football coach Luke Fickell

Wednesday’s quiz
Where did Brett Favre play his college football?

Tuesday’s quiz
Arizona Cardinals are the only NFL team hasn’t tried a 2-point conversion this year.

Monday’s quiz
In the classic movie All the President’s Men, Robert Redford, Dustin Hoffman played writers Woodward and Bernstein.

*****************************

Wednesday’s Den: Mid-week musings…….

13) Average salary for an NFL head coach is $6.7M; there are now eight college coaches who make more than that, as schools jockey to lure big-name coaches to their school, while players bolt from one place to another, trying to find their way to the NFL. Strange times we live in.

12) Fresno State football coach Kalen DeBoer bolted to Washington to become the Huskies’ new coach; few hours later, Fresno’s quarterback Jake Haener entered the transfer portal- wonder where he is going.

11) Unclear who will coach Notre Dame in their bowl game, now that Brian Kelly has bolted to Baton Rouge.

10) Alabama is a 6.5-point underdog to Georgia in the SEC title game Saturday; it ends a streak of 92 straight games where the Crimson Tide was favored to win, dating back to 2015.

9) Ohio State 71, Duke 66:
— Second time in five nights the #1 team in country got beat.
— Duke didn’t score for the last 4:29 of the game.
— Buckeyes survived 11-22 shooting on foul line.
— This result helps to explain why Duke avoids pre-conference road games, at all costs.

8) Over their last four games, New England outscored opponents 63-0 in second half.

7) IF Javier Baez signed a 4-year, $140M contract with the Detroit Tigers; lot of money flying around this week, between baseball and college football coaches.

6) Nevada sportsbooks took in $1.1B in bets during October, breaking the previous single-month record of $786.5M wagered during September.

5) Former Michigan/Arizona coach Rich Rodriguez will be named football coach at Jacksonville State, a I-AA team that beat Florida State earlier this fall. Gamecocks are moving up to I-A and the Sun Belt Conference for the 2023-24 season.

Rodriguez’s coaching resume:
2001-07— 60-26 at West Virginia
2008-10— 15-22 at Michigan
2012-17— 43-35 at Arizona

I would be remiss if I didn’t point out that Jacksonville State is the alma mater of Dieter Brock, a quarterback who led the Rams to the NFC West title in 1985, his only season in the NFL, after he had a great CFL career.

4) In three seasons as a pro, Zion Williamson has played in 85 NBA games; he’s missed 81 games with injury. As the old saying goes, the best ability is…….availability.

3) Group that owns the Boston Red Sox bought the NHL’s Pittsburgh Penguins this week; things could get awkward in Beantown if Bruins/Penguins ever cross paths in the playoffs.

2) Colorado 80, Stanford 76:
— First conference game of this year’s college basketball season.
— Stanford led 21-10 early, but was minus-9 (15-6) in turnovers.

1) When the clock strikes midnight Wednesday, baseball is expected to slip into a lockout, which is exactly what the sport doesn’t need. This week has been fun, with free agent signings and some trades; that’s what the sport needs, not lawyers quibbling over how to divide their millions that they make year after year.

Here’s my solution:
— Expand the playoffs
— Add Sunday doubleheaders to condense the regular season
— Universal DH
— Ban shifts.

Shake hands, and play ball, it isn’t that difficult.

NFL teams with best turnover ratio:
+12- Indianapolis
+10- New England
+9- Buffalo, Green Bay
+8- Arizona, Tampa Bay
+5- Minnesota, NJ Giants
+4- Dallas, New Orleans

Quote of the Day
“)Notre Dame) Players, largely fed up with the distant, CEO-type approach of Kelly, made it abundantly clear throughout the day to Swarbrick and to anyone else who would listen that they wanted 35-year-old defensive coordinator Marcus Freeman to become their next head coach,”
from The Athletic

Thursday’s quiz
Which actress played Anfernee Hardaway’s mother in the basketball movie Blue Chips?

Wednesday’s quiz
Brett Favre played his college football at Southern Mississippi.

Tuesday’s quiz
Arizona Cardinals are the only NFL team hasn’t tried a 2-point conversion this year.

*******************

Thursday’s Den: Doing some thinking out loud

13) NC State 104, Nebraska 100, 4OT:
— Four players were ejected in a fracas.
— Nebraska led by 14 with 9:31 left in regulation
— Only the fifth 4-OT game in the history of ACC basketball.

— Free throws: NC State 32-42, Nebraska 11-15
— NC State’s Seabron played 57:00— he scored 37 points, 12 rebounds, was 17-20 on foul line. He took more foul shots than the whole Nebraska team.

12) Been watching a ton of college basketball; I’m wondering if home court advantage is going to be bigger than usual this season, since there were no fans last season— playing in front of hostile crowds isn’t that easy, and fans might actually might little more zealous this season, after having to stay home last winter.

Something to watch as we move thru pre-conference play.

11) Cincinnati 59, Miami OH 58:
— Bearcats had the onions to play a pre-conference road game, and barely survive it.
— Miami led by 8 with 12:37 left.
— Cincinnati was 2-10 from foul line.

10) Next time someone says Mike Krzyzewski is the best college basketball coach ever, remind them that Duke hasn’t won an ACC regular season title since 2006. He is a great coach for sure, but when John Wooden was coaching UCLA, there was no conference tournament- he had to win the Pac-12 regular season title, just to get into the NCAA tournament, and he won seven national championships in a row, ten in all.

9) Duke alum Marcus Stroman announced on Twitter that he’ll be pitching for the Cubs next year; Stroman is 61-60, 3.73 in 173 career starts. He threw 179 innings LY (10-13, 4.35), after opting out of the 2020 season. He got $71M from the Cubs on a 3-year deal.

8) Taysom Hill will start at QB for New Orleans Thursday night against the Cowboys. Hill is this generation’s Tim Tebow; more of a runner than a passer. He went 3-1 starting at QB for the Saints last year, his only NFL starts at quarterback.

7) Notre Dame hired defensive coordinator Marcus Freeman as their new coach; he was the defensive coordinator at Cincinnati from 2017-20, has never been a head coach.

Interesting that Kelly will have to hire two coordinators at LSU, since Freeman/Tommy Rees both elected to stay at Notre Dame.

6) Georgia 82, Memphis 79:
— Memphis led by 5 with 4:19 left.
— This is a bad loss for Memphis; Georgia had lost four games in a row.
— Tom Crean wins his 400th game as a head coach.

5) North Carolina 72, Michigan 51— Wolverines looked terrible; UNC outscored them 43-24 in second half.

4) Washington State 51, Arizona State 29— This is a final score; ASU is now 2-6- they’ve lost five games in a row. Sun Devils shot 21.1% from floor in this game.

3) About 10 or so years ago, I was sitting at an AAU basketball tournament at Siena College; guy sitting next to me was a great coach at the Division II level, and I knew him to say hello to, so I picked his brain a little bit, asked him what he looked for while evaluating talent.

“What is his college skill?” was his reply. He told me that he considered getting loose balls a skill, just like passing or shooting or defense. Learned a lot that day, and I appreciate it.

2) I’m watching The Bodyguard on TV late Tuesday night; excellent movie, but it was on a commercial station, and there were A LOT of commericials during the movie, so I had to look it up. Movie is 2:09, the time slot it was in was four freakin’ hours!!!!

— Movie is 2 hours, 9 minutes
— With 1 hour, 51 minutes of commercials.

Yikes.

1) I’m concerned that the geniuses who run baseball are killing the golden goose; Texas is going to pay their 2B/SS a combined $57M a year for the next seven years, so you can’t tell me they’re not making money, but now a lockout is underway, and who knows when it will end.

Players are making a fortune, owners wouldn’t be in it if it wasn’t profitable, but some of the owners don’t try to win- they throw scrub teams out on the field and expect fans to still some to the ballpark and pay lot of money to watch cruddy teams play.

Get in a room and find a middle ground, before it is too late.
