Israel Adesanya vs. Marvin Vettori II

UFC Middleweight Championship Bout

Saturday, June 12th at the Gila River Arena

Following his attempt to become a two-division UFC champion, Israel Adesanya returns to the middleweight division to defend his middleweight crown. A failed attempt at dethroning the light heavyweight titleholder Jan Blachowicz shouldn’t be held against “The Last Stylebender”, it was all a bit too soon, in my opinion.

We should also be reminded that Adesanya barely made attempts to bulk up for the light heavyweight stature and remained close to his current 185lb walk-around weight.

This weekend, the Nigerian born UFC champion will return to the weight class where he remains undefeated, and he’ll be faced with a dangerous opponent who came close to defeating him once before back in 2018.

Marvin Vettori, otherwise known as “The Italian Dream”, has the opportunity to make Italian MMA history and become the first champion to hail from the beautiful country in Europe. Prideful of his heritage, Vettori’s championship goal is highly driven on this face, and we should expect the best version of him that we’ve seen to date.

During their first encounter, Vettori was hesitant to utilize his grappling advantage; he believed his striking offence from the southpaw stance was enough to disable Adesanya.

However, he soon learnt that the former kickboxing professional was more than just the hype surrounding his name, losing a closely fought split decision contest due to the striking output of his opponent.

Will this Saturday night deliver a version of Marvin Vettori that will solely focus on his wrestling credentials? The game plan is clear, avoid striking at range with the champion and close the distance setting up the takedowns.

Instead of flipping a coin on whether Vettori can accomplish this game plan, we should focus on the durability of both men and the high probability this fight will not end inside the distance.

Deiveson Figueiredo vs. Brandon Moreno II

UFC Flyweight Championship Bout

Saturday, June 12th at the Gila River Arena

The first headline championship event of the evening involves another two fighters familiar with each other’s skill set. Current flyweight champion Deiveson Figueiredo will defend his title against Brandon Moreno for the second time in six months.

The defending Brazilian champion is well known for his devastating knockout power in a division where this attribute is rare.

There are not many fighters who have survived the vicious onslaught from Figueiredo, but Brandon Moreno can proudly claim this accomplishment. Not only that, but Moreno also managed to outperform Figueiredo in the championship rounds during their first fight.

Brandon Moreno utilized some sleek grappling offence and out-strike Figueiredo for a drawn content, but what can he do to sway the judges for a decisive win this time around? Finishing Figueiredo without the need for a judge’s opinion would help, but that task is easier said than done.

The same goes for the defending champion, and he will be headhunting Moreno to avoid the judge’s scorecard. Still, across 23 professional fights, nobody has been able to finish the extremely tough Brandon Moreno.

Similar to the main event contest, all men wanting to put their hands on gold are highly durable fighters who, when defeated, are handed their losses via the judge’s scorecard. Again, I expect the durability of the fighters at hand to excel in their finishing ability, therefore leaving the winning outcome in the hands of the judge’s.

Just in case a late stoppage occurs, we can’t find value in the over 3 and a ½ rounds.
