I remember discussing this in a few threads and coming to the conclusion of never buying the half point. I searched around for a while on here to try and read that thread again and maybe I lost my mind and just read it and never commented but anyways i got lazy and couldn't find it.

I was discussing it with a buddy online and he sent me this link. It is interesting to read. It is over NFL but if you want to understand the value of buying a half point it is worth the read.

bottom line I still don't know what to do for sure but would love to hear the discussion....here is the link

a) NFL - buy around the 3 if the juice isnt outrageous
b) CFB - buy around the 3 if you must but it's not necessary. there's really no advantage

dont buy otherwise. you may feel better about your 7.5 favorite if it were -7 but it's very likely the game margin wont land on 7

save yourself money. dont buy points unless it's around 3.

some will contend buying a half point for some NFL totals (around 37, 38 and 41) is a good idea but I havent looked in depth

one way to save yourself some money each and every year is getting multiple books and a lines service (sportsoptions is a great one)

getting the best line by having multiple outs and seeing how the lines are moving is a great way to get a better line and hit a higher percentage in the long run

honestly think that if a half point matters that much that you have to pay extra you shouldnt be betting the game

The way to earn the most profit long term is to pay less juice, not MORE! Shop, shop, shop. Good Luck

I pay only 5% juice w/ my local. That's pretty juicy isn't it (no pun intended)?

Same with me. Buying the 1/2 point on key numbers only has to help me 1 in 19 times for it to make me money. Although only one player, I can say it absolutely has made me more money over the last several years in both NCAA and NFL. When it stops making me money, I'll stop buying the 1/2 point in select situations. I particularly like buying the 1/2 point on halftime lines, i.e. - 3 1/2 to -3 or +2 1/2 to +3 when trying to middle my original bet. At 5% juice on all bets it is a no brainer for me.

No half point is worth close to 10%, except the # 3 in the NFL(16% depending on a couple of factors). Books add huge profits to their bottom line in college football with the squares buying on and off 3 and 7, and any other # that makes their hearts content.

THINK People. If the man is selling it to you then the odds are in his favor. (This does not include a local that lets people buy half points for 5%. Can someone please hook me up with this guy.) It's like the blackjack dealer selling you insurance. The only reason they will let you buy insurance is because in the LONG run you will lose money. Same goes for buying points from the books.

Has anybody ever wondered in college football why the books freely move their lines across the #3, and in the NFL they won't budge(more vig)? Think about it. This will be my final post on buying points. I promise!

In the NFL there is no question buying .5 and fulls can be very beneficial, in the college and amateur leagues you are dealing with non professional players where finding the goofy lines always pays more than buying points.

Also, people that go 50-50 think it is important to get 5% juice, if you find a book that has 5% juice they won't let you box games and they won't pay if you crack them big. If they did do either or they couldn't afford to let you get 5%.

Always buy on to or off of #3 and #7 if you can do it for a dime or less.

Best Wishes

I'd be interested in seeing how many games pushed the point spread or came within 1/2 point of the spread vs how many total games were played. That will statistically tell you if buying a half point is worth it.

Think this is the same as buying insurance in Blackjack. I never buy points and I never do teasers (I might as well parley for the better odds)!!

Bottomline: Stay away from the game if you are worried about a half point!
