And how many times before a game when a team isn't given a chance on national television does this lead to an upset, or at the very least a cover. It happened to Bama the other night... And now UCLA. These are the kinds of games that really concern me when I'm on the public's side. I would much perfer there wasn't this kind of hype on a game when I make my selections. I had Tennessee pegged this summer. I just didn't think there would be so much negative feedback on UCLA leading up to the game. Don't think the players don't read and hear the same things we do. UCLA and Bama both played like beaten stepchildren from the opening kickoff on and never let up.oh but i definitely did get quite a kick out of the pregame show when the only compliment for ucla was their kicking game hahah
oops
Might have something to do with USC being the best team every year since 2002.
Very poor special teams play yesterday by both Tennessee and Rutgers. It led to a 16 point swing in the Rutgers game. And a 19 point swing in the Tennessee. I can't emphasize enough how important this unit is to the outcome of a game. Even less obvious things like shorter punts or kickoffs which consistently lead the other team to better field position is enough to eventually make a difference in a game. An opposing team is going to run a much different offense from the 40 yard line than they are from their own 15 or 20. Field position is HUGE in big games...Barry Switzer used to emphasize field position more than any other aspect of a game...And he won more close games playing field position football than any other coach I know...The Vols FG kicker was off last night something like 3 or 4 times. Just hit one of those kicks and they win the game. There really wasn't any excuse for that poor team performance except bad coaching and preparation..
If you remember, Machlin also had a back breaking punt return on Illinois last season, which was the difference in the game... Special teams aside, Jeremy Machlin gets my vote as the most dangerous player in the country. The kid is "electric".How about the special teams in the Illini Mizzou game? Two back breaking TD returns by Maclin. May or may not have determined the game but will sure determine who covers. I was lucky the line was at 10 by game time (took the Illini and the points) so I ended up with a push. I agree with you 100% though looking back on the weekend, special teams and new QB's had a lot to do with covering point spreads. Oh...and also the good ole ESPN fade. How many analysts on ESPN had Pitt pegged the real deal this year?
