hey man be cool.

It's not every day when you can award a game ball to the special teams.

Might have something to do with USC being the best team every year since 2002.

And how many times before a game when a team isn't given a chance on national television does this lead to an upset, or at the very least a cover. It happened to Bama the other night... And now UCLA. These are the kinds of games that really concern me when I'm on the public's side. I would much perfer there wasn't this kind of hype on a game when I make my selections. I had Tennessee pegged this summer. I just didn't think there would be so much negative feedback on UCLA leading up to the game. Don't think the players don't read and hear the same things we do. UCLA and Bama both played like beaten stepchildren from the opening kickoff on and never let up.

you're so right the espn fade was absolutely locked in this weekend. it got to the point where it was almost comical... i was on bama and ucla MLs and listening to the pregame you knew something was up... for the love of god they were interviewing neuheisel before the rutgers game and the tone was so subtly condescending it was like tenn was playing a D-II team... basically you have no chance and i hope your QB doesn't kill himself... rick took it in stride and we all saw what happened.

but on the other hand, regardless of how things turned out, you still have to be absolutely terrified when the only person agreeing with your picks is lou fuckin holtz

On the other hand, sometimes you may make a wager on the right side, but it turns out wrong. everything I assumed about UCLA was true. I saw nothing to to dissuade me from that. But, whenever Tennessee fumbles away a scoring opportunity at the goal line that would have in essence broken UCLA's spirit and backs, anything can happen at that point and did.

Still, Tennessee's playcalling was horrendous. It was obvious to me that UCLA had difficulty stopping the run and Tennessee had difficulty consistently completing their passes. Still, the Tennessee play caller tried to throw the ball whenever all he had to do was pound UCLA with the run the entire second half.

Very poor special teams play yesterday by both Tennessee and Rutgers. It led to a 16 point swing in the Rutgers game. And a 19 point swing in the Tennessee. I can't emphasize enough how important this unit is to the outcome of a game. Even less obvious things like shorter punts or kickoffs which consistently lead the other team to better field position is enough to eventually make a difference in a game. An opposing team is going to run a much different offense from the 40 yard line than they are from their own 15 or 20. Field position is HUGE in big games...Barry Switzer used to emphasize field position more than any other aspect of a game...And he won more close games playing field position football than any other coach I know...The Vols FG kicker was off last night something like 3 or 4 times. Just hit one of those kicks and they win the game. There really wasn't any excuse for that poor team performance except bad coaching and preparation..

the first couple tenn fg atts was simply bad coaching in my opinion... they were all very lengthy, 51 and then 53 or something. not really the kicker's fault.

now rutgers special teams... that was just absolutely disastrous and ruined the whole game. talk about a screwjob

So then tell me why are SEC teams not falling all over themselves trying to get a couple OOC games with USC?

Just think of all the glory it would bring them and all they would have to do is play as well as Stanford.

You sound like a real believer with a post like this. Start a letter writing campaign to LSU's president, or Florida. Don't just sit there with your tiny-fisted jabs. Do something about it if you are so sure.

How about the special teams in the Illini Mizzou game? Two back breaking TD returns by Maclin. May or may not have determined the game but will sure determine who covers. I was lucky the line was at 10 by game time (took the Illini and the points) so I ended up with a push. I agree with you 100% though looking back on the weekend, special teams and new QB's had a lot to do with covering point spreads. Oh...and also the good ole ESPN fade. How many analysts on ESPN had Pitt pegged the real deal this year?

If you remember, Machlin also had a back breaking punt return on Illinois last season, which was the difference in the game... Special teams aside, Jeremy Machlin gets my vote as the most dangerous player in the country. The kid is "electric".
