PRESIDENT GEORGE W. BUSH DELIVERS WEEKLY RADIO ADDRESS
Sat Oct 02 2004 11:11:30 ET

BUSH: Good morning. Next week, in Iowa, I will proudly sign the Working Families Tax Relief Act. This bipartisan law is good news for America's families.

It keeps in place major portions of the tax relief we passed over the last three years. It preserves marriage penalty relief, the thousand dollar child tax credit, and the expanded 10-percent tax bracket. The law also increases the refund limit on the child tax credit, which means about 7 million low-income families will get higher refund checks next year.

Because we acted, 94 million Americans will have a lower tax bill again next year, including 70 million women and 38 million families with children. I met many families that are benefiting from tax relief, including Gary and Angela Brown, from Springfield, Missouri. Gary works at a manufacturing company, and Angela stays at home with their four children. Last year, the Browns saved about $3,000 on their taxes.

They used some of that money to put a down payment on braces for their daughter. If Congress had not extended tax relief, the Brown's tax bill would have gone up $1,500 next year. Now, because we acted, they will be able to keep and use that money. The tax relief has helped millions of families, like the Browns, to spend, save, and invest for the future. Thanks to their hard work, America's economy is strong and getting stronger.

This week brought more evidence that tax relief is helping our entire economy move forward. The economy grew at an annual rate of 3.3 percent in the second quarter. America's economy has been growing at rates as fast as any in nearly 20 years.

And for 12 consecutive months, our economy has been creating jobs. We've added 1.7 million jobs since August, 2003, including 107,000 manufacturing jobs since January.

The unemployment rate is now 5.4 percent, down almost a full point since June, 2003, and below the average rate of the 1970s, 1980s, and 1990s. The home ownership rate is at an all-time high, and new home sales are still rising. After-tax income is increasing, which means workers are keeping more of their paychecks. The tax relief we passed is working.

Having extended tax relief, we must take additional action to strengthen our economy so every American who wants to work can find a job. To create more jobs, we need to reduce the burden of regulation on small businesses. We need to end the junk lawsuits that keep entrepreneurs from creating new jobs.

Congress needs to pass my energy plan to make America less dependent on foreign sources of oil. We need to open more foreign markets to American products and ensure that other countries play by the rules. We must continue to spend taxpayer dollars wisely in Washington, D.C. And to help families and small businesses plan with confidence, we need to make all of the tax relief permanent.

Some politicians in Washington have a different view of tax relief. When I proposed tax relief for working families in 2001 and 2003, Senator Kerry and other Democratic leaders voted against it.

In fact, Senator Kerry has voted consistently against marriage penalty relief, against increasing the child tax credit, and against expanding the 10-percent bracket. Now Senator Kerry and the Democrat leaders are proposing a lot of new federal spending, and the only way to pay for all their promises is to raise taxes on working families. You know where I stand. Higher taxes are the wrong policy for this growing economy. Our families and our country are better off when government lets people keep more of what they earn.

And that is why I'll work with Congress to keep taxes low, and that is why I will proudly sign the Working Families Tax Relief Act of 2004 into law.

Thank you for listening.

They used some of that money to put a down payment on braces for their daughter.

:)

All free over here for children.

Teeth braces.
Legbraces.
Spine braces.

Trouser braces you have to pay for...

Is it only the children of the rich that get the help they need?
Do children have to pay for ALL of their medical care in the US?

So without that tax cut, this child would have had no help.
Outstanding.
A country well worth fighting and dying for.

True, and children are a low priority in certain societies.

Congress needs to pass my energy plan to make America less dependent on foreign sources of oil.
I had a look at his 'plan'.

Boy oh boy are you guys heading for the dark ages.
More coal, oil and nu-cue-lar (as wonderboy would say) plants.
No wonder he wimped out of the Kyoto protocol.

He's going to make the US 'more efficient' by allowing all sorts of pollution increasing stuff.
Short term buxx, with long term costs for the USA.

I hate to be nitpicky. Err, no I don't, actually I like it. But anyway, let's see here...94 million Americans, including 70 million women. So you're telling me 70 million women have a lower tax bill but only 24 million men? WTF. But wait a sec....38 million families....so only 24 million (or less) of those families include men? Where the f*** did these numbers come from?

Eek,

Why should I have to pay for your kid's braces? Or education? Why can't you pay for it? After all, I didn't get any pvssy when you were making that kid so why should I foot the bill for your decisions?

Well if we get to 'opt out' of tax bits.

I'll opt out of the military, police/security services and prisons bit.
(Why should I foot the bill for a right wing state that illegally invades countries and has hundreds if not thousands of political prisoners and wastes millions/billions on various stupid homeland security nonsense.)

You can opt out of the welfare bits.

Then you would be ripe for conquest and people like me would raze your people, land and other resources. That's an unfortunate truth about us blood-thirsty warmongers.

Your right, we just need bulk rolls of barbed wire for stringing around our homes, attack dogs in the garden and assault weapons.

These would be the key elements of a stable and prosperous society with incredible growth potential. :awesom:

(...and lots of suitcase nukes for throwing at anyone that invades our new eutopia)

Don't take this the wrong way but have you even used a firearm? Why the hostility toward them?

I have only used high powered airguns, and a shotgun.

I don't like them because its too easy to kill with guns.

Guns lower the effort and responsibility of killing to a minor formality of pointing and pulling the trigger.
Killing is peasy with a gun.

Being legally allowed to use guns and swords would actually make me safer as a relatively able and co-ordinated individual.

But just 'cos I'm safer, doesn't mean my society is safer.

Theres too many eejits around to make guns a viable option in a civilised society.

"marriage penalty refief"......why should it have made a difference in the first place come tax time on whether one was single or married?

Responding on what Cujo stated about paying for other peoples braces for thier kids.....I know a number of couples who have kids and apparently had more than they could afford....had a nephew that moved in next door and he was always coming over to borrow this or that or a few screws or tools......had a few stories about needing gas for the mower or a few dollars for whatever.....

Seems like whenever I need something I just went down to the home center and bought it.....whenever he needed something he was banging on my door.....has more kids than he can afford....who cares about personal responsibility anymore?

Nephew took his family and moved somewhere else....he's stopped by a couple of times looking for more money.....I just tell him I just bought groceries or something and I'm all tapped out.......I doubt I'll ever see the money I loaned him but then again maybe it'll be worth it if I don't see him again.....tired of him and other people knocking on my door all the time....has quieted down somewhat, but there are times I wish I had an auction and just sold anything someone else might want to borrow....

If you want kids that bad then save up and pay for your own kids braces and insurance and clothing and all the other stuff that goes with the territory....take on some responsibility instead of having other people pay for it....
