WACO, Texas -- Baylor quarterback Seth Russell fractured a neck bone near the end of the Bears' 45-27 win over Iowa State, the school announced.

The injury occurred when Russell pushed forward on a 4-yard run with 5:36 left in the fourth quarter. Postgame X-rays and a CT scan revealed the fracture. He will see a specialist Monday.

Baylor coach Art Briles told ESPN's Brett McMurphy that Russell would "probably be out awhile" but won't "find out for certain until Monday."
"He's a tough guy. It's hard to see tough guys hurt," Briles said.

Backup quarterback Jarrett Stidham took over on the Bears' next drive. He would get the start if Russell can't play for the second-ranked Bears, who have an off week before traveling to Kansas State for a Thursday night game Nov. 5.

"This is a tough deal for Seth," Briles said. "Stidham is the best young quarterback I've been around. He's very polished."
Coming into the weekend, Russell was leading the nation with 27 touchdown passes to just five interceptions. He added two touchdown throws and one pick Saturday. He threw for 197 yards on 16-of-37 passing.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.

That's a big loss, maybe not for next weekend but for the following weeks of he's not capable of returning. They're going to have to lean on the running game a little more until stidham becomes a little more comfortable. That might take a full week or two. Should be Interesting

What's the history on these type of injuries? Personally, I hope the kid is okay...sucks for the team.

I`m no Doc.....But I`m thinking this kid could be done for the season......Any injury to the neck is serious.

Good luck to him!

Neck and lower back injuries are the worst kinds of injuries. They usually require long recovery times. I hope Seth Russell makes it back...for the bowl game..wink wink

That's really unfortunate. Some may question why he was in the game late in the 4th and running with the ball, but that's hindsight. We all know Baylor has to run it up and that still didn't help them last year.

Baylor was 4-1 to win it all with Russell......Since his injury 9-2 not much of a change.

They not gonna make it. Not w/o Russell. They will lose 1 or 2 remaining B12 road games.

They will almost certainly lose to Oklahoma now and probably tcu.... Any other big 12 teams watching tape on tcu and Baylor know all you have to do is run the ball... Iowa states second half offense was the best I've seen against Baylor all year..... Handoff, handoff, handoff,QB keeper, handoff, play action lol.... Mark my words Perine will eat Baylor and tcu alive... I expect him to rush for 200+each game

The backup has come in during blowouts and has put up numbers.

Granted, its much different starting. However, this kid is far from a scrub. There's a reason they have given him some time during the season.

No doubt he can play, former 5 star guy that switched his commitment from Texas tech to Baylor, so we know he's got the talent.... Starting a game and having the whole offense hinge upon your checks at the line, throws down field and into tight Windows is a lot to ask of a true freshman. He will make mistakes in big games, baleeeeve that

Unfortunate to see the kid get hurt like that.. I really wonder if Baylor will skip a beat? They seem to be able to plug in a new QB last couple of years w/o slowing down the train and this Stidham kid comes highly regarded. I would not count Baylor out of anything. They are a big, strong team with a lot of talent on the field.
