I know some sales people that make more than doctors. And the sales person didn't spend $1000's in school. I have talked to a number of servers that are making more money than they would with their degree.

generally speaking, yes they are overrated

of course there are many exceptions and there are ways in which you can make a degree valuable. But it takes a lot of planning

Nothing against a doctor, but a salesman is getting paid on performance. A top-notch salesman is making his company $$$$.

But there are a number of companies that require college degrees. To say that degrees are overrated is much to vague, some are some arent.

Absolutely.

The Education is under going a major change... It has become too much of a business and less about education. Truthfully too many of these kids in college probably are NOt dedicated or smart enough... too many bullshit degrees... even business management, something that sounds official, you can graduate and not really have a single tangible skill.

I think we will see a major change in education over the next 10 years...

Going to college was the biggest financial mistake I've ever made....

The economy has been turned in its head... I (as a haorstylist) make 2-3 times what someone with a bachelors/masters makes.
Trades are becoming the genius move lol.. A law degree or medical degree is for suckers.. lol

If I could do it over again I wouldn't of gone to 4 years of college

To clarify I think going is better than not, but at 18 its nearly impossible to know what you want to do for the rest of your life, yet youre forced to make a decision...

College should be learning a skill or becoming a expert in a specific field... Shouldn't be a general education... If you pick a major you should be able to have a list of skills that you can write on paper that you can do now that you couldn't do before...

I'd recommend Engineering and Nursing for Bachelors... Hard to think of other Bachelor degrees I'd recommend to kids...

Kids that go to college are often better financially than those that dont to start with...

My favorite class was sociology, thing I remember most in that class was something like 90% of childern will earn the same as there parents (with inflation included)

I've been looking for a field to get into. I'm just burned out on the cake biz. I have a family memeber that is in auto sales and makes a killing. But not sure that industry is going to withstand the crash the US is about to have. And the big crash is coming

I can see that... Idiocracy at its finest.

My thing is that statistics clearly show that adults who don't have degrees are in a much worse position than those that do. There is not enough jobs to employ the unskilled laborers in our country. Having some sort of education is becoming a requirement if you want a good job. I know everyone has anecdotal evidence of someone who didn't go to college who makes tons of money, but the statistics are overwhelming. As the graph says... "Education Pays".

original question is very hard to answer.

In general degrees are overrated but it really really depends.

If you are going to school just to go to school or just cause your parents are making you, then more times than not it is a big waste of money.

If you are going because you want to do something that requires a degree (doctor, lawyer, nurse, engineer, accountant, computer programmer, teacher, etc.) then you are waaay better off than someone who doesn't get a degree.

Sure there are those that become very successful without a college degree (or in a field not related), but that is not a roll of the dice I'd recommend someone to take.

I think if an 18 year old told me they had no idea what they wanted to do, I'd easily recommend they go to college and get some form of a business degree. That will help you down the road in life no matter what you go into.

Agree.

The worst mistake someone can make is to go to school for a "business" degree.

Its overrated in that kids are brainwashed in hs that they NEED to attend college without knowing what they want to pursue first. So they go to bumblefuk uni and wind up getting a degree in something like Communications, Psychology, or Binge Drinking . Then get stuck working in retail, admin assitant, hospitality, etc. with a massive student loan debt. Its also convenient that student loan debt is the only kind that cannot be purged.

I would recommend them going to a junior college while they sort things out. Much cheaper.

I guess we all have different experiences. I've worked in the oil industry now for almost 7 years and to be employed in anything other than field work, you need a degree. Like schedulers are always in demand, no one goes to college to be a "scheduler" but to be one you need a 4 year degree. And they pay around $90-120k depending on how much experience you have. We are always looking for safety professionals, qc, qa, etc and they get paid a shit load. No one goes to college to get a 4 year degree in safety. At this previous company I worked at, we poached a QC guy and paid him $240k a year. He made almost as much as my boss. These positions are in incredibly high demand, but it requires a degree. But this is probably not the best example because even the field workers make a shit load more than most people. This is purely anecdotal evidence and not reflective of the country as a whole. Which is why I rely on actual data to tell the story rather than what I "observe" in my experiences.
