NBC NEWS - An Oklahoma mother will spend the next ten years in prison for letting another adult blow marijuana smoke in her child's face...and it was caught on camera.
<!--startclickprintexclude-->
<!--endclickprintexclude--> Prosecutors in Caddo County say this video shot last year shows a woman blowing marijuana smoke into the mouth of a 7-year-old boy, who has Downs syndrome.
Investigators say the mother, Caroline Beavers, sat watching nearby.
Workers at an electronics store notified police last April after finding this video on a computer that had been repossessed.
Beavers was arrested and charged with one felony count of enabling child abuse. She was sentenced Friday to ten years in prison.
Prosecutors say the woman who blew the smoke, Brandy Hugar, has pleaded guilty and is awaiting sentencing.

Despicable behavior no doubt, but if I was a tax-paying citizen of her state, I wouldn't want to pay 250K (average of 25K per year) to incarcerate her for 10 years.

This pretty much sums up my attitude.

Not to mention it's regrettable just how ignorant the people of Oklahoma - as expressed by both the prosecutors and the jury - are about the effects of cannabis smoke on human beings.

And of course, it's always sad to note the obvious fact that after ten years in the state pen, this woman's future both as a mother and overall citizen will be almost irreparably damaged for the remainder of her life. Thus the damage to her community will likewise be increased.

It's an awful thing to do, but.....

About 10 years ago I had car trouble in a parking lot. A lady offered my a ride home. I was about 2 miles from home and I knew my mechanic would grab the car later that day so I gladly accepted.

I sat up front with her, her baby in the back. The windows were closed. She smoked a cigarette for the entire ride. I said nothing as she was doing me a favor. But it sickened me. I can't imagine what years of it has done to that kid.

Anyway, the 10 years was because it was pot. If the mom's friend had urinated on the kid she'd have gotten probation.

stupid thing to do to a child, forcing any type of smoke down someones throat is wrong. and the way the mother pushed the child away and said 'stop it!', wow what a f'kin bitch, i really feel for that kid. however, imo, cigarette smoke would have been much more cruel. 10 years though? F'kin insane.

Am I the only one thinking what is this computer store doing looking at the files on this computer? Why didn't they just erase all the files by reinstalling the operating system? Also, i'm not condoning the actions of the defendants here..but 10 years is insane. Murderers get less time quite often.

Now that you mention it. You are right. They have no business looking at your media files. I'm sure it's covered that they can if they want to though. She probably did something like leave a shortcut to it on her desktop.

Either way, glad she got caught. 10 years? I don't know, I have mixed feelings about that. She definatly deserves to lose custody of the child.

I think that 250k would be wrong. Lets adjust it for inflation. Also, if the kid get put into state custudy. Probally another 20k per year.
So as a taxpayer I am out up to 400k?

Death is not the solution.
Cannabis should be treated similar to tobacco

Taken where?

Is there any reason for us as sideline observers to have confidence that a child taken by the state of Oklahoma will be placed into a safer and more healthy environment than that of his own mother? And that's before we even factor in that the child has DS.

Other than this foolish incident, there's been no evidence presented that demonstrates she is otherwise unfit

Dealers display ill effects of secondhand smoke in long-awaited results

By Liz Benston

Las Vegas casino dealers are exposed to a host of harmful chemicals through secondhand smoke while on the job, according to a new National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health study.

The study, the first to examine the effects of secondhand smoke in Las Vegas casinos, reported that the dealers had traces of a tobacco-specific carcinogen in their urine.

The results were drawn from 124 casino dealers at Bally’s, Caesars Palace and Paris Las Vegas who wore portable pumps that measured the level of tobacco smoke in the air during their shifts. In addition, 114 dealers submitted urine samples to the agency before and after their shifts.

The institute conducted research and interviewed workers during three on-site visits from July 2005 through January 2006.

Anti-smoking advocates hailed the results of the long-awaited study, which mirror previous government and privately funded research on secondhand smoke and are expected to provide ammunition to those pressuring the gaming industry to implement smoking bans.

“Casino workers deserve the same rights as other workers, including the right to a healthy and safe workplace, free from toxic secondhand smoke,” said Cynthia Hallett, executive director of Americans For Nonsmokers’ Rights. “After the release of this report, we hope to see casino workers protected by strong smoke-free workplace laws throughout the country.”

But insiders said that won’t be easy, even if many casino executives privately support the idea. The industry has long fought smoking bans, fearing they would cut into profits as smokers go elsewhere to light up or interrupt their games to smoke outdoors.

With the recession pushing some casino companies to the verge of bankruptcy, some insiders say the industry would put up an even bigger fight during such a critical time.

“If we (ban smoking) and competitors don’t follow suit, what then?” said one executive, who asked not to be named.

The institute’s report found that a majority of the 147 dealers who completed a separate health survey reported symptoms such as red or irritated eyes, a cough, stuffy nose, runny nose and headache. In total, 11 percent of the dealers studied, who did not work in poker rooms at the time, had been diagnosed with asthma, while 35 percent had symptoms suggestive of work-related asthma. Many poker rooms have voluntarily banned smoking.
