(WCCO) A local school social worker is in jail after a mistake put more than $2.5 million in her bank account, according to a criminal complaint filed in Hennepin County District Court.
Police said Sabrina Walker put that money in a savings accounts, bought cars and jewelry and then asked why she'd gotten the millions in the first place.
Walker is a social worker at Hopkins High School, where parents and students were stunned to hear she has been charged with stealing millions from the Minnesota Department of Human Services.
According to court papers, a check intended for Hennepin County Medical Center was instead sent to Walker.
The state accounting system mistakenly issued the millions to an account number which varied from HCMC's by just one number.
Investigators say she, and her live-in boyfriend Charles Lockhart, then put the money into a new account at a Wells Fargo Bank.
The two allegedly bought $500,000 of bank CDs, set up IRAs and bought thousands of dollars in jewelry, electronic and limo services.
According to the criminal complaint, more than a month after the millions were mistakenly sent to her Minneapolis home, Walker called the Department of Human Services to ask about the check. After that, she allegedly withdrew thousands in cash and bought several cars, including two Land Rovers.
Administrators at Hopkins High School could say little about the case on Tuesday but they did confirm that police were at the school on Tuesday.
