Iowa basketball coach Todd Lickliter said this morning that it is likely that Iowa senior Cyrus Tate remains doubtful for the
Hawkeyes’ Big Ten games this week.
“I don’t think he’ll be able to go, but I’m hopeful that it will be no more than this week,’’ Lickliter said. “Now, that’s a coach talking. We’ll see how it goes.’’
Iowa’s rebounding leader has not played since suffering the injury when he stepped on the foot of another player just under eight minutes into the first half of a Jan. 8 game against Minnesota.
In addition to hosting Wisconsin on Wednesday, Iowa travels to Penn State on Saturday.
The
Hawkeyes have lost three straight in Tate’s absence and after attempting to return to practice last week in hopes of playing in Sunday’s game at Purdue, Tate was walking with the help of crutches and had the ankle protected by a walking boot as he moved to and from the bench at Mackey Arena.
“It’s a high-ankle sprain. They’ve done all the MRIs and that sort of thing and they have shown nothing more than a sprain. It’s just going to take a little longer than we thought,’’ Lickliter said.
“He gave it a try last week that may have set him back a bit. He’s doing everything he’s supposed to do and at this point, I don’t want to get him back on the court until he is fine. I don’t want this to become a lingering thing.’’
Lickliter said Tate, the only senior in the
Hawkeyes’ starting five, did not practice Monday and his status is currently listed as day to day.
“I don’t like excuses, but I don’t want to minimize his absence either. He has made good contributions to our team,’’ Lickliter said.
Today is also the first day of second-semester classes at Iowa and Lickliter expects to receive an eligibility report later in the day.
He has said previously that given the academic support available for student-athletes at Iowa that there should be no reason why any of his players should be academically ineligible.
Lickliter also said that reports he received during the semester indicated that his players were in good standing heading into final exams.
