Texas faces "potentially catastrophic" damage when Hurricane Ike hits in the next few hours, US Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff has warned.
He said as many as 100,000 homes could be destroyed by flooding.
There are fears the hurricane could cause a high storm surge that leaves miles of low-lying coast underwater.
Residents of the Texan coastal city of Galveston face "certain death" if they do not evacuate, the National Weather Service has warned. <!-- E SF --><!-- Inline Embbeded Media --><!-- This is the embedded player component -->

At 0000 GMT on Saturday, the "very large" hurricane was about 100 miles (160km) south-east of Galveston, with winds around 110 mph (175km/h).
The massive system is already buffeting Texas and causing flooding along the Louisiana coast, still recovering from last weekend's Hurricane Gustav.
More than a million people in Texas have been advised to leave their homes before Ike hits late on Friday or early Saturday morning.
But people in Houston city have been told to shelter at home, board up their properties and stockpile supplies.
Authorities are trying to avoid a repeat of 2005, when some 110 people in Houston died during a chaotic evacuation in the face of Hurricane Rita.

The US National Hurricane Center said Ike could grow from a Category Two to a Category Three storm - a "major hurricane" - by the time it reaches the coast.
Ike has already caused devastation in Cuba and Haiti, where hundreds of people have died in several tropical storms over the last month.
The hurricane's predicted path will take it through Galveston and on to Houston, home to America's biggest oil refinery and Nasa's Johnson Space Center.
"Our nation is facing what is by any means a potentially catastrophic hurricane," said Mr Chertoff. <!-- Inline Embbeded Media --><!-- This is the embedded player component -->

He added: "This storm is so big in fact that its impact is already being felt all along the Gulf Coast."
The Texas authorities have laid on more than 1,000 buses to facilitate the mass evacuation.
In Galveston - scene of the country's deadliest hurricane, which killed at least 6,000 people in 1900 - 75 buses are taking residents to the state capital, Austin.
Weak and chronically ill hospital patients are also being moved.
But some residents were ignoring the dire warnings in Galveston, where Ike threatens to bring a 20ft (7m) high storm surge.

"If it ain't your time you ain't going anywhere," Emory Sallie, 44, told AP news agency, while walking and drinking a beer near his home.
Ports are shut and almost all energy production in the Gulf of Mexico has been suspended as a precaution, although Ike was expected to miss most of the installations. The storm would be the first major hurricane to hit a US metropolitan area since Katrina devastated New Orleans three years ago. President George W Bush has declared a federal emergency in Texas, allowing funds to be freed to help the state deal with the storm.

yeah think this gonna be bad alot of idiots stayed on galveston island supposedly and other low lying areas

local reporters in a hotel on the island that has a WW2 bunker....saying fires breaking out hopping from home to home entire island dark now....too dangerous or impossible for anybody to get to it.....

usually what happens i suppose rita everybody freaked out and it veered late and didn't really turn out this bad now this time people stay and gonna get hit hard

as for oil not really an issue with this storm....what is a potential problem is shutting down refineries for an extended period of time affecting domestic prices at the pump....wholesale gas prices been spiking last few days

It's a good question and obviously any sitting administration would do all it could to help out it's party stay in power.

However OPEC has slashed production recently by 600,000 barrels a day. Oil speculators have been exiting the market in a big way which is why oil has dropped to 105.00 a barrel but this Ike came at a rather bad time for repubs.

The best thing they did was get Iraq out of the news by basicly "standing down" the forces we have there. This "Surge" that was implemented a while back has been given as the reason for the relative calm that Iraq has enjoyed recently but anyone who nows what's going on there knows that the truth of the matter is the "Surge" was really an large outlay of cash given to insurgents in order to pay them not to attack our forces or Iraqi government forces.

Long live democracy hey.

Instead of mocking Canadians and Micheal Moore, why don't you specifically tell me what assurations I made that were not factual?

Insurgents not being payed?
OPEC cutting back productions?
Hurricane Ike's effect on gas prices at the pump?

Were is the "shit" in my post? Or perhaps the facts have "shit" on your worldview. No.

I dont want to argue with Canadian, your people and your country are a non issue.

Show me a credible article that says America is paying insurgents not to attack Iraqi people.

I am sick of listening to you Canadians criticize America and your 911 troofer theories.

Here's your article.

If you did not know this was going on then I suggest you research a topic before commented on it. This is why our governments can get away with policies that help only their friends and hurt the average citizen. An uneducated electorate is destroying your country. Just because he says something cute like "If we leave now ,they will follow us home" or "We are going to fight them there so we don't have to fight them here" you don't have to be like sheep and believe it. He couldn't
find Iraq on a map while he was Governor of Texas.

Al-Qaeda was behind 9/11. When did I say otherwise?

And where in Iraq could you find someone from Al-Qaeda proir to this war?
"Ah, those sand-niggers all look the same, Americans will never know the difference"
That's Cheney to Bush explaining why we can get away with attacking Iraq.
