DENTON – Four North Texas football players were jailed early Sunday after a series of incidents at a party held by a local bar following the Mean Green's win over Arkansas State on Saturday night.
Defensive back Jeremy Pearl was charged with 3rd degree felony assault of a public servant and silent abusive calls to 911. He was released from the Denton County Jail after posting $6,110 in bail. Linebackers Cody Spencer, Taylor Casey and wide receiver Ricardo Smith were all arrested and charged with disorderly conduct, a Class C misdemeanor. They were released Sunday from the Denton City Jail after posting $300 in bail.
None of the players could be reached for comment.
Police reports said the incident began after Joseph McPherson hit Spencer in the back of the head with a beer bottle. A fight involving UNT players ensued after the incident, according to the report.
McPherson, who is not a member of the team, was arrested and charged with assault resulting in bodily injury, a Class A misdemeanor. He was released from the Denton County Jail Sunday after posting $2,500 in bail. He could not be reached for comment.
UNT police officers initially responded to an assault call from the R Bar in the 900 block of Bernard Street late Saturday night, said Denton Police Sgt. Daryn Briggs. Denton police officers arrived shortly after and began attempting to disperse a large crowd in the bar's parking lot.
A UNT police officer encountered Pearl in the crowd and told him to leave the scene, the report said. The officer later saw Pearl walking toward him in the crowd.
The report said that Pearl slapped the officer in the stomach with an open hand.
The officer arrested Pearl for assault of a public servant.
While in the back of the car, Pearl used his cell phone to dial 911. Pearl told dispatchers that he had been arrested under false pretenses, the report said. The officer then confiscated the phone.
"First of all I'm not aware of what charges have been filed or who was involved," said UNT athletic director Rick Villarreal. "We will do what we always do, which is look at the facts and see where we need to go from here."
Coach Darrell Dickey could not be reached for comment.
