At the same time as Vice President Joe Biden is visiting Beijing in hopes of improving relations between the U.S. and China, another group on a goodwill trip from Washington, D.C., encountered an unexpected diplomatic hiccup.
Georgetown had to leave the court during the fourth quarter of its exhibition game against the Baiyi Rockets on Thursday night in Beijing after both benches emptied and a wild brawl erupted between the two teams. None of the Hoyas were seriously injured despite trading punches with the opposing players and having to dodge chairs thrown onto the court and water bottles hurled from the stands.
The best account of what led to the melee comes from the Washington Post's Gene Wang, apparently the lone U.S. reporter in attendance.
Wang wrote that the game was tense from the outset and had to be stopped earlier after two players exchanged words. At one point a Rockets player even berated John Thompson III after the Georgetown coach yelled at his team.
The hard fouls and constant bickering eventually devolved into bedlam when Bayi big man Hu Ke was called for a foul against Georgetown guard Jason Clark. The senior made it clear he did not appreciate the hard foul, sparking the initial exchange of shoves that led players from both benches to run onto the court in defense of their teammates.
No video of the melee is currently available, but this photo gallery from Sina.com offers several scenes of the chaos. It was bad enough that Georgetown coach John Thompson III yanked his team off the court, made a hasty exit out of the arena with the score tied at 64 and then issued the following statement about the incident soon afterward.
"Tonight, two great teams played a very competitive game that unfortunately ended after heated exchanges with both teams," Thompson said. "We sincerely regret that this situation occurred. We remain grateful for the opportunity our student athletes are having to engage in a sport they love here in China, while strengthening their understanding of a nation we respect and admire at Georgetown University."
It's unclear whether Georgetown will continue its 11-day exhibition tour of China or not, but the Hoyas certainly have had a memorable trip so far.
Wednesday's impromptu visit with Biden once seemed like the most exciting part of the trip. Now that's a distant second.

I don't blame Georgetown players one bit - Thompson was clearly trying to calm the situation down all game, and the refs continued the call the game one way - even when Chinese players were committing blatant fouls in the open court.

looks like China started it, maybe we'll give them Taiwan (or at least get out of the way) if they forgive our debt + a massive cash payment of 25 trillion

Did some of you guys even watch the video? The Chinese team rushed the court first and was jumping guys and doing most of the fighting. I was ready to blame Georgetown but the video shows the Chinese were the Ron Artest's here.

Reports says that most of the Chinese players were former Chinese military.

Georgetown makes up with Chinese team after bench-clearing brawl..

Members of the Georgetown basketball team and a Chinese professional team met Friday, one day after their game ended prematurely with a bench-clearing brawl.

he Hoyas were at the airport preparing to leave Beijing for Shanghai when coach John Thompson III and two players met with representatives of China's Bayi Rockets.Chinese Vice Foreign Minsiter Cui Tiankai confirmed the visit and the sides exchanged souvenirs.

"My understanding is that it's all cleared up," Cui told reporters at a briefing on Vice President Joe Biden's ongoing visit to China. "We're pleased about this outcome."

The two teams are expected to play again Sunday as part of Georgetown's 10-day goodwill trip to the country that has been cited by the U.S. State Department as an example of sports diplomacy that strengthens ties between the two countries' peoples.
The game Thursday was stopped in the fourth quarter after rough play evolved into an ugly scene with the players fighting and chairs and water bottles being thrown.
After the game, Thompson issued the following statement:
"Tonight, two great teams played a very competitive game that unfortunately ended after heated exchanges with both teams. We sincerely regret that this situation occurred.
"We remain grateful for the opportunity our student-athletes are having to engage in a sport they love here in China, while strengthening their understanding of a nation we respect and admire at Georgetown University."
