Why throw Josh on 3 days rest?

Seems it would be wiser to pitch Redman in his regular turn and then if necessary throw your ace in game #7. I say this now so it's not like I'm 2nd guessing them later if they lose or if Beckett comes out tired after 3 only days rest. Marlins are in the drivers seat so throw your ace when he is fully rested, Redman may win anyway! Either you do not need him at all if you win game #6 or you go down with your best shot (and fully rested) in game 7. Is there a prize for winning in 6 rather than 7 games?

Patrick- I'm pissed about Redman not going in Game Six. I had already laid a good price with Pettitte over him. The guy can't get anyone out. The Yankees would be jumping out of their spikes to hit his meatballs.

I agree 100% with you on this one. Beckett is clearly the ace of this staff. If there is a Game 7, then give him the ball on his full rest. I don't like guys going on three days rest. It tends to not work out and I think it's a bad move by McKeon throwing Beckett in game 6.

That would make the most sense to me Fish, that this is a joke. I just can't see why gamble on a young kid being sharp after 3 days rest if you don't have to? They got Willis in the mix too? Start Redman but keep him on a tight leash if you want, but whatever you do don't outsmart yourself here. I could see pushing your ace forward if there were other games behind this but they only have to win one of the next two games? Try and win six anyway you can but if not you have your rested ace to win game #7. Don't put forth 2 half-assed efforts to win one game and lose them both!!

Exactly Bob, I see it the same way.

I don't get it Jman. I could almost see down 3-2 and throwing him as an act of desperation. If we lose we're out anyway so we didn't want to go out with our ace on the bench, that sort of thinking makes sense. Doesn't cut it though when you've got the upper hand. We panicked in game six and ended up losing them both?!

Yes I've got the Marlins to win the series so this really bothers me!

There are lots of people I see that disagree with us on this Pat, but I think you're dead on. I totally disagree with using Beckett on 3 days rest. To me, it seems like Mckeon is lowering his %'s of a series win by using a pitcher that is not 100%. Also, I'm with Fish---I don't totally believe Beckett is going to start game 6.....

I Agree Patrick. Seems like the Fish are banking on a game 6 win. Would you really trust Redman to throw game 7? Didnt think so.

I was wondering the same thing. I heard they'll probably go with Pavano in 7, but isnt' that the guy that game up 22 runs to Boston this year

....

ok, they were all his, but he started that mess.

If I were the Fish, I'd throw Beckett in game 7. You have to go with your best at the end IMO.

I hope he doesn't run at of gas! If he does I assume they will put Redman in. Maybe they feel Beckett being so young won't be able to handle the pressure of game 7?

Looks like I'm in the minority but I figure McKeon knows what he's doing and wouldn't be starting Beckett unless the pitching coach is on board.

Redman has been terrible in playoffs - I wouldn't start him. Two best that are left are Beckett and Pavano. I know they don't usually pitch on 3 days rest but they're young. Plus Beckett pitched a great game in relief against Cubs on 3 days rest.

What do you think are the chances of the series NOT going to a game 7????
I guess McKeon thinks he has a chance of finishing the series tomorrow, but c'mon you guys, Yankees at home, Pettite pitching (full rested), after lossing two games in a row???
Yankees will win tomorrow and Marlins would've made a HUGE mistake by starting Beckett on game 6.
Just my thoughts.

Ivan,
Good point. It might be more of a psychological problem than a psychical one for these pitchers. Mussina is the perfect example of that. He was brilliant in game 7, but notoriously is out of rythm after a missed or early start.

Stupid David Wells leave after the first inning throwing 8 game pitches....that's BS. What kind of player leaves due to 'back-spasm' that early especially in a critical game like that - if he wasn't feeling good warming up - why he even started.

NYY needs to win game #6 - if they do - they win Game # 7 In my opinion...

According to team sources, Wells had had these spasms before and usually got over them once he was out on the mound, but this time the pain intensified to beyond the point where he could pitch. Ever have lower back spasms, where the muscles start locking up and the pain in the lower spinal column radiates? Ever have a back problem where you literally have to crawl to get to the bathroom? If the pain was close to that severe, I certainly can understand why he left.

One other thing - rubber arm or not, Wells looks to be far overweight, and due to his seemingly non-existent workout regimen (or at least not a professional one), all of that weight hanging off the front puts strain on the lower back muscles which themselves probably are weaker than what they should be. If he'd lose say 100 FREAKING POUNDS, he might not have to deal with spasms and might not contribute to another World Series loss.

This is one of those situations where all the how comes and what fors will be meaningless if the Marlins win. Jack Mckeon will be called a genius (in this case he has two shots) if the Marlins win the series. Nothing new, like John Madden says, "winning is a great deodorant". I hope Jack is smiling tommorow night.

pitchers in the 1900-40s threw meatballs up. They were not power pitchers like todays pitchers.
