Bush Gives Palestinians $20 Million
Reuters ^ | Wed Dec 8, 2004

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The Bush administration on Wednesday announced it was giving $20 million in direct aid to the Palestinian Authority to help it through a financial crisis. A senior Bush administration official said it hoped the aid would encourage additional donations from other countries "at a time when the Palestinian Authority is in desperate need of budget support to pay its bills, maintain stability and allow it to focus on the larger question of governing."

The Palestinian Authority is facing a severe financial crisis due to falling tax revenues during four years of violence which has paralyzed the Palestinian economy.

The $20 million in direct aid was to be announced during an international donors conference for the Palestinians in Oslo.

It is part of a push to help the Palestinians before their Jan. 9 election, at which President Bush hopes the Palestinians will elect a democratic leader willing to negotiate peace with Israel.

"The upcoming Palestinian elections have made a functioning Palestinian Authority more important than ever," the official said. "The United States has a national security interest in helping to end the ongoing violence and terror in the Middle East and to make progress toward the president's June 24, 2002, vision of peace."

If it works, it's worth the 20 million. I truely believe I have a better chance at hitting a 10 teamer this weekend though.

If they get more than a dollar off that lying sack of chit I will become a Republican.

Iraq is still waiting for most of its money too.

Why do you think the Turks wanted cash up front when they dealt with Clinton and Bush(pre-Iraq invasion negotiations)? The USA has a bit of a reputation.

Most US $ pledges never get fulfilled.
BTW the UN is still waiting too. :>Grin>

No doubt it's tied to 'elect Abbas or else' crap.

They may come up with some of the money, eek. Why are you always so negative? I hear there's about five bucks or so still left in the social security coffers ... :)

As you point out it will have strings, the US wants Abbas.

The guy they are afraid of is Barghouti, he has grassroots support.

Do you suppose there's time to fly the Diebold Führers over there before the election?

I reckoned that Barghouti would come to the fore back in May.

The next Nelson Mandela?

I didn't think it would happen so soon tho...
Arafat popping his paws so soon after Barghoutis' high profile trial is bad news for the neocon agenda.

This $20million will go to the Arafat 'old guard' to try and keep the new generation out.
The old guys in suits are tired and weary, they'll sign anything the US/Israel plonks in front of them.
Guys like Barghouti are the new generation, and they won't sign away the Palestinian future.

$20 million for the Palestinians from George Bush and the Neocons....
such christian charity, I'm touched.

It must be breaking their little hearts :>Grin> :>Grin>

--------------------------------------------------------

Grassroots among who? Jew killers?
In the Gaza Ghetto, you support whoever tries to defend you and you family and your society from the occupying Israeli army.

Hamas etc have huge influence there.
(why do you think Israel was assasinating all their leaders)

I can't say I know much about the West Bank/East Jerusalem politics tho.

Gaza is so polarised only extremism counts IMO.
And once the old men are elected any unpaid $$'s will vanish in a wee puff of smoke.

Speaking of rewards....

I heard on the radio today....had to do with Social Security benefits....Bushie mentioning to the effect of "possible reduction in benefits for those receiving"

Pretty easy to say something like that....like running out of gas and claiming "just a little drop in horsepower"......

But hey, there's still 20 mill left to send overseas....or basically, put a match to.....

Once the ponzi scheme known as Social Security implodes it will be a glorious day. I'll feel for the poor saps that didn't make other arrangements but in the long run it's for the best imo. Participation in those programs should be voluntary.

The first thing they should do away with is final salary schemes.
These schemes are notoriously underfunded.
(which would hit mainly the Gov employees, especially top Gov employees and Corporate Hogs in the private sector.)

Making final salary schemes illegal would remove an amazingly inefficient wasteful pension system in a stroke.
