Why such a dislike for Crosby?

1.9% – Percentage of 324 NHL players surveyed who chose Penguins C Sidney Crosby when asked, "Who is the best player in hockey?" Crosby finished tied for eighth, while Capitals LW Alex Ovechkin finished first with 51% of the votes (SI, 5/25 issue).

He captains the team that beats the favored Caps to advance to the finals for the 2nd year in a row and he just doesn't get the respect [one the ice] he deserves. I know he's a crying, whining, little bitch but.....8th place? This kid is a winner. Bottom line.

he's a better all around player than ovechekin. he plays defense better, passes better & is better in close to the goal. ovechekin has a better shot & slightly better speed. crosby does whine too much but he's only 21 & in a position of leadership. he will grow out of that soon enough. besides, there are a lot of players that whine more than him but they're just not high profile guys. if youv'e noticed he's really toned down the bitching at the refs in the playoffs. iv'e heard the question about him & ovecheki come up at least 3 times on playoff broadcast & all three times the analyst picked crosby as the guy you want to build a team around. albeit by a small margin over ovechekin. IMO if malkin can learn to go all out every shift in every game like crosby & ovechekin do he may be the best player in the game soon.

I think its because the NHL has made him the cover boy and a lot of players hold a grudge to that because he is so young and they feel he hasn't earned it. Its not crosby's fault the league is making him the face.

That being said I think he handles everything well considering he is still so young and he will prove to be one of the all-time greats when his career is said and done.

This is the same reason many of the fans hate on him, he was handed the C at such a young age and he is extremely competitive. He fights for calls just like any other captain does to the ref. Call him a baby, call him whiny all you want but I am sure every NHL team would love Crosby on their team.

I don't know what it is, but I think Ovechkin, Malkin, Iginla, Kane, Toewes (sp?), Hank Zetteberg, Datayuk, are all more exciting to watch. Sidney probably comes off as a prima donna in the eyes of other players, while OV has more charisma and personality, so perhaps they view OV in a better light.

Someone that doesn't get recognized enough for his skills is Zach Parise from NJD.

Ive seen all those players you listed pull off some great moves but the speed and intensity crosby plays at makes him very very exciting to watch.

Yeah I know, it's just usually players are so superstitous about it. I remember when the Wings celebrated with the Campbell Trophy in 95, and well we all remember how the Finals turned outhno:

Yzerman grabbed it in 97 and went right to the lockerroom, but Lidstrom never even touched it last year.

I don't think it can be because he is young, since Ovechkin is a mere 21 months older than Crosby.

I think those who argue he is a young man who complains a bit too much have hit the nail on the head. Remember, this is in a question posed to NHL players. I'm sure there is very little respect out there for a kid making a ton of money, yet acting the way Sidney does. I don't blame the kid because he is so young, but it's true. Ovechkin has charisma and the admiration of his peers, while Crosby does not.

A perfect example was at the All Star skills competion. You saw Ovechkin having fun, joking around with his All Star teammates. Sidney would never have done that.

However, there must be something else for them to rank him #8. Remember, Ovechkin makes a lot of money as well.

Crosby just needs to stop crying and bitching about calls. He looks like a spoiled kid if you watch him sometimes out there complaining to the refs, flailing his arms, etc.....He just needs to grow up a little on the ice and simply discuss calls/ noncalls with the refs as the Captain of the team. He also needs to stop admitting to the media that he hates it when oppoisng fans ride him and taunt him.......just adds more fuel to the fire.

He is a thrill to watch and one of the best. If he does what I mentioned more people will like him.
