NEW YORK (AP) — A New York City police officer shot in the head while attempting to stop a man he suspected of carrying a handgun was recovering Sunday as detectives continued to gather evidence in the case, the fifth shooting of an officer in as many months, officials said.

Officer Brian Moore, 25, underwent surgery after being rushed in a patrol car Saturday to a Queens hospital after he and his partner pulled up in an unmarked police car to a man who was adjusting his waistband suspiciously, said police Commissioner William Bratton.

The officers exchanged words with the man before he turned suddenly and fired at least twice, striking Moore, Bratton said. His partner, Officer Erik Jansen, 30, radioed for help.

"They did not have an opportunity to get out and return fire," the commissioner said at a Saturday night press conference at a Queens hospital with Mayor Bill de Blasio and other officials.

Police flooded the area following the shooting — police helicopters flew overhead, officers searched house-by-house and some could be seen walking on roofs. About 90 minutes later, police arrested Demetrius Blackwell, 35, near the crime scene in a house on the block where he lives, officials said.

No weapon was found and, as of early Sunday, Blackwell had not been charged. It wasn't clear if he has a lawyer.

After the shooting, witnesses described Blackwell to responding officers and pointed them in the direction he ran, Bratton said.

De Blasio said the shooting was a painful reminder of the risks officers take every day.

"Our hearts are with his family, his loved ones," the mayor said. "Our hearts are with his extended family, the men and women of the NYPD."

Moore, who comes from a family of police officers, has been on the job since July 2010.

The shooting instantly evoked fears of the December slayings of two uniformed officers as they sat in their patrol cars in Brooklyn by a man who posted online that he was seeking retribution against officers for the death of Eric Garner in an apparent chokehold by police.

The shootings of Officers Wenjian Liu and Rafael Ramos strained an already tense relationship between city police unions and de Blasio. Patrolmen's Benevolent Association President Patrick Lynch turned his back on the mayor at a hospital the day of the killings and said de Blasio had "blood on his hands."

But Saturday night, Lynch was among the officials who attended the press conference and could be seen shaking the mayor's hand and speaking briefly with him afterward.

Bratton said Blackwell has a criminal record that includes a weapons possession charge, but the suspect made no such anti-police postings and was being pursued by the anti-crime officers because of his behavior.

Neighbors near the scene of the shooting were surprised by the violence and described the residential area with many two- and three-family homes as quiet and safe.

"You walk down the street, no trouble," said Sandreaus Adam, 52. "This is not a neighborhood where you're just going to hear shots."

An officer involved shooting, with no mention of race? Not in the headline, and not in the story... yet they are usually quick to say the race in the headlines and a dozen times in the story.

Here are some headlines, to use as an example:

*Police 'murdered' mentally ill black man, say family
*Black teen shot by police
*Police shoot, and kill, unarmed black man
*South Carolina police officer charged after black man shot dead
*Officer who shot black man told boss he ran away
*Atlanta officers shoot black woman in patrol car in gunfight
*Police shoot dead unarmed black man live on TV as his family watched at home

Seriously?? Why the double standard?

No mention of race in the headlines, and no mention of race in the story!! What gives??

This is why this is not a big public issue...

"Police flooded the area following the shooting — police helicopters flew overhead, officers searched house-by-house and some could be seen walking on roofs. About 90 minutes later, police arrested Demetrius Blackwell, 35, near the crime scene in a house on the block where he lives, officials said."

People expect the general public to do stupid shit and get punished. The issues involving cops that have the authority and can kill an unarmed person... there is never a man hunt for the cops, they're not even arrested, pretty much go unpunished. And I'm not saying they deserve it, I actually side with the cops 99% of the time. Just saying why it's a bigger issue when someone with authority kills an unarmed person versus a civilian who shoots at someone and they search for them with helicopters and punish them to the fullest extent of the law. There were over 1,000 people killed by cops in 2014... obviously people only react to certain instances where they feel the killing was unjust. People don't care if some gang banging black trying to shoot at cops gets killed.

because the 96% crowd, the real racists in this country who are spoon fed by the likes of Obamas and Sharptons (yes, they're very similar), the people who have been raised and trained and mentally whipped into believing they're victims by the liberal establishment (a/k/a a cancer on society), can't be called racists. It would be racist to do so

and although there's some sarcasm in my remarks, there's a whole lot of truth too

the 47% crowd Romney cited really does exist, although they're not all minorities

so while working taxpaying educated Americans really do lean right by say 54/46 to 57/43, the 90/10 vote overcomes the taxpaying vote

PS: you can keep your doctor, the deficit will be cut in half, unemployment will stay below 7%, Romney hates women and I'm still investigating what i was doing and what orders I gave when an American Ambassador was being murdered

'Exceptional' NYPD officer dies from gunshot wound to head'

NEW YORK (AP) — A 25-year-old police officer shot in the head over the weekend while attempting to stop a man suspected of carrying a handgun died Monday from his injuries, the third New York City officer slain on duty in five months.

Brian Moore, who was in a coma after undergoing brain surgery following the Saturday evening shooting, was pronounced dead at a Queens hospital with his family at his bedside, including his police officer father, uncle and cousin.

Hundreds of uniformed officers stood at attention outside the medical center and lined up down the block to salute the ambulance carrying his body out. Afterward many could be seen crying and consoling one another.

"He proved himself to be an exceptional young officer," Police Commissioner William Bratton said, noting Moore had made more than 150 arrests in less than five years on the job and earned meritorious service medals.

Moore and his partner were in plainclothes and in an unmarked police car when they approached Demetrius Blackwell in a quiet Queens neighborhood after they saw him adjusting his waistband, a move that made them suspicious he had a handgun, authorities said.

The officers pulled up next to Blackwell, 35, and exchanged words before the man suddenly turned, pulled out a weapon and fired at least twice at them, striking Moore in the head and face, according to court documents.

Blackwell has been charged with attempted murder and other crimes. He's being held without bail and hasn't entered a plea. His attorney has denied the charges.

He'll be charged with first-degree murder, prosecutors said.

Mayor Bill de Blasio mourned Moore's death.

"For five years, Brian served with distinction and he put his life on the line each day to keep us all safe," he said in a statement. "On Saturday, he made the ultimate sacrifice in service to the people of New York City."

President Barack Obama, speaking in the Bronx, saluted Moore's service and said officers around the country "deserve our gratitude." And Gov. Andrew Cuomo said in a statement Moore's shooting was a "deplorable act of violence."

Patrick Lynch, who heads the rank-and-file police officers' union, joined Moore's family at the hospital and told reporters afterward that the city's police force would pay their respects, and then return to their posts patrolling streets, stairwells and subways.

"They may have sadness in their eyes, but they have bravery in the hearts," he said.

Moore had been on the job since July 2010, officials said. Flags at police headquarters were flying at half-staff Monday.

He is the first city officer to be killed on duty since two uniformed police officers were slain in December in Brooklyn.

Officers Wenjian Liu, 32, and Rafael Ramos, 40, were shot at close range as they were sitting in their patrol car Dec. 20. The gunman, 28-year-old Ismaaiyl Brinsley, then ran into a nearby subway station and fatally shot himself.

Before the ambush, Brinsley posted on an Instagram account that he was planning to shoot two "pigs" in retaliation for Eric Garner's death in police chokehold.

Officials have said Blackwell made no such postings and had an extensive criminal history, including serving five years in prison on an attempted murder conviction.

Still no mention of race in the newest article... Lets look at more headlines:

1. NYPD officer 'fighting for his life'; suspect denied bail Associated Press
2. New York police officer dies after being shot in head Reuters
3. NYPD plainclothes officer shot in head; suspect arrested Associated Press
4. NYPD Cop Brian Moore Dies After Saturday Shooting in Queens ABC News
5. Man Charged in Shooting of Police Officer The Wall Street Journal

Everyone knows (yet few will admit it) that had the officer shot him in the head... Race would be in the title, in the story at least a 1/2 dozen times, and there would be protests and soon to be looting and rioting.

What gives??

The stats don't back this claim at all in that most of the cases don't need an arrest or punishment according to the DA or Grand Jury.

I'm speaking about the public cases that make the news. That's the whole point of this thread.

do you really not understand the difference in this case and the other cases?

I mean you do what's been going on in this country for a century right?

Are you someone who also says" why is there no white entertainment channel"

and another ....

HOUSTON - Prosecutors said a 24-year-old police woman was stabbed a total of 14 times by a man who allegedly told investigators he was out to kill the police officer because "cops are oppressive."
Houston homicide investigators said Jeremiah M. Matthews, 23, tried to kill an off-duty Houston Community College Officer Aprils Pikes early Tuesday morning while she was working as a security guard at a Meyerland Walmart store.
During a magistrate's hearing Tuesday night, prosecutors said, "The defendant gave a statement admitting he had the intent to attack a police officer and his desire to kill a police officer.”

And yet the forum liberal trolls have yet to address the question at hand..just give dumb bullshit examples as to why the headline doesn't mention race as to the murderer of the police officer...only when it is the other way around.

Par for the course, thanks guys for reconfirming my disgust for all things left.
