Why don't NFL coaches ever realize they need to let the other team score

Payton's only chance to win the game tonight was to let Minn score a TD on the 1st play after the long PI penalty. They would've gotten the ball back with 1:30 left, down by 7 with 2 timeouts. Instead they got it back with 12 seconds and no timeouts down 3. NFL kickers will make a 30 yd FG at least 95 out of 100 times (and a vet like Longwell 99 out of 100)

agree. they think that it makes them look like they are giving up.

you gotta play the odds, and they are much better with 1:30 left and 2 timeouts...even if you have to go 80 yards.

this is a very good point. I completely agree with this philosophy, 12 sec no timeouts that equals no chance!

However I'll give Payton the benefit of the doubt and say the reason he didnt let them score was the fact that Minny had 1st and 10 on the 14 yard line and if Peterson was paying attention he would fall down on the 2 ...and that would be ball game

didnt Westbrook do this a few years ago?

some nfl coach let a team score a few years ago (anyone remember it??).

the only guy crafty enough to let that happen in the nfl these days is andy reid. i'd say bellichek too, but he's too stubern.

Very few have actually doen this over the years, but I believe some have.

That timeout the Saints wasted at the 2 minute warning bit them in their ass.

Yeah, that was horrible coaching, you have to let them score. Brees with 2 timeouts and over a minute left stands a way better chance than what they ended up with. For that matter, they *ussied out with the play calling that left Gramatica with a missable field goal. If they play action on that last possession they have an incredibly high % chance to pick up more yards and a first down.

i couldn't agree more - I wanted to poke Sean's beedy too close together eyes out during that whole scene... And I was on the Vikings. And then instructing the kick return team to just sit on it when they get it? Run the ball 20 yards and give Brees a chance for God's Sake - he can't throw more than 60 yards. You have to admit, 4 seconds left from the 40 is better than 11 seconds left from the 24... If I had been on the Saints here I would be writing an intense bad-beat article.

And by the way, this isn't a one sport thing - in hoops I am always seeing teams (good, big name teams) allow that game tying three at the end of regulation- what the shit is up with that? I coach hoops, and if I'm up three and you're coming over half court with 4 seconds left, my kids are hammering you. Go to the line, hit 'em both, we'll pass the ball in and be out. Some times I just don't get it.

I would have to agree with the guy that said Minnesota would have fallen down at the goal line if given free pass at the endzone.
Childress has a very tight grip on that team, and I have to think he had them prepared for that (especially with the 2 minute warning to prepare for it).

Either way it wouldn't have hurt to give it a shot. I'd say half the players in the NFL would probably let their legs get the best of their brains and just punch it in.

I would still say it's worth a shot, have a couple guys carry him in from the 2 or 3 - lots of ifs, sure, but the game comes down to 11 seconds and one Drew Brees throw from the 23, I just think there's more to offer there.

No, it is not. If you are quick, 11 seconds give you at least one, possibly two attempts to get in field goal range and kick for the tie. 4 seconds give you just one chance at a miracle touchdown. What do you think is more likely, getting to the opponents 30 from your 24 or scoring a touchdown from your 40?

I won my bet, penguin dick, and I'm pretty sure you're the idiot. You take the best chance you have to tie or win the game - obviously Drew Brees' 48 yard rain maker attempt wasn't the Saints' best option.

As for the other point, that makes sense, but the Saints plan was bogus last night, though they were put in an impossible place.
